Thousands of Afghans secretly moved to Britain after data leak, World News
Concerns that individuals could be targeted by the Taliban led the previous Conservative government to set up the relocation scheme, involving thousands of people and estimated to cost the government about 2 billion pounds (S$3.44 billion).
The leak by the Ministry of Defence in early 2022, which led to data being published on Facebook the following year, and the secret relocation programme, were subject to a so-called superinjunction preventing the media reporting what happened, which was lifted on Tuesday by a court.
British defence minister John Healey apologised for the leak, which included details about members of parliament and senior military officers who supported applications to help Afghan soldiers who worked with the British military and their families relocate to the UK.
"This serious data incident should never have happened," Healey told lawmakers in the House of Commons. "It may have occurred three years ago under the previous government, but to all whose data was compromised I offer a sincere apology."
The incident ranks among the worst security breaches in modern British history because of the cost and risk posed to the lives of thousands of Afghans, some of whom fought alongside British forces until their chaotic withdrawal in 2021.
Healey said about 4,500 Afghans and their family members have been relocated or were on their way to Britain under the previously secret scheme.
But he added that no-one else from Afghanistan would be offered asylum because of the data leak, citing a government review which found little evidence of intent from the Taliban to seek retribution against former officials.
The review, a summary of which was also published on Tuesday, said more than 16,000 people affected by it had been relocated to the UK as of May this year, though some of those had been relocated to the UK under existing schemes.
News of the leak comes as Britain's public finances are tight and the right-wing, anti-immigration Reform UK political party leads in the opinion polls. Superinjunction lifted
The government is facing lawsuits from those affected by the breach, further adding to the ultimate cost of the incident.
Sean Humber, a lawyer at Leigh Day who has acted for Afghan citizens affected by previous data breaches, said those affected were "likely to have strong claims for substantial compensation" for the anxiety and distress caused by the leak.
British forces were first deployed to Afghanistan in 2001 following the September 11 attacks on the United States, and they played a major role in combat operations there until 2014.
In early 2022, a spreadsheet containing details of Afghans who had worked for the British government prior to the Taliban takeover in 2021 and had applied for relocation to Britain was emailed to someone outside of government systems by mistake.
The superinjunction was first granted in 2023 after the Ministry of Defence, under the former Conservative government, argued that a public disclosure of the breach could put people at risk of extra-judicial killing or serious violence by the Taliban.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer's centre-left government, which was elected last July, launched a review into the injunction, the breach and the relocation scheme.

FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show Trump Standing Next to Ghislaine Maxwell and Pointing at Underage Girls?
A video has gone viral on social media that claims to show U.S. President Donald Trump pointing at a young girl while standing next to Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted sex trafficker and former associate of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The video started circulating days after Trump closed the Epstein case, putting an end to conspiracy theories. Several users have since been trying to find out the authenticity of the video and photos given that Trump was one of the many high-profile names who was acquainted to the convicted pedophile. However, this video is completely fake and is nothing but an attempt to spread misinformation among the people. Viral Video after Epstein Files Closed The afke photo of Trump standing enxt to Maxwell and pointing at a girl Facebook The video over the past few days has been posted on several social media platforms. For example, on July 12, a Facebook user posted the video, and it had garnered over 2 million views. The same footage—or still images from it—was also circulated on platforms like Threads, TikTok, and X. The Threads post alone garnered more than 690,000 views. However, both the video and images featuring Trump, Maxwell, and two young girls are not authentic. The fake video was created by an unidentified user with the help of an artificial intelligence tool that generates fake video from an authentic decades-old still image. The original image did not include any children. A reverse-image search on revealed that the original photo was first published by the British tabloid The Sun in a November 23, 2019 article. The caption described it as, ""Party girl Ghislaine with Trump and Ann Jones at a party in NYC in 1997," and the photo was credited to Alpha Press. The fake video appears to show Trump pointing at a minor girl Facebook The same genuine photo—without any children—was later circulated by several users on Instagram, Reddit, Threads, and X. Not the First One The TikTok account @lackofintelligence0 features several AI-created videos similar to the one in question, altering still images or video frames of Trump or Bill Clinton with Epstein and/or Maxwell into fake videos. For example, one fake video posted on July 15, 2025, falsely depicts Trump with Epstein alongside three young girls who were not present in the original footage. That video has racked up 358,000 views. Another AI-generated video, created from a still image or video frame, showed Trump pointing at one of two young girls. This clip, also uploaded on July 15, amassed nearly 825,000 views. The misleading video began circulating during a period of heightened public tension surrounding Epstein in the summer of 2025. It followed unverified claims by tech billionaire and former Trump adviser Elon Musk, who suggested—without offering any proof—that Trump appears in incriminating, unreleased documents linked to Epstein's criminal activities. Around the same time, in early July 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI released a memo saying that no "client list" linked to Epstein existed—despite Attorney General Pam Bondi previously telling Fox News in February 2025 that such a list was sitting on her desk for review.

R&A discussed Turnberry British Open with Trump's son
Find out what's new on ST website and app. PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland - R&A officials met with the son of U.S. President Donald Trump this year to discuss the possibility of golf's British Open returning to Turnberry, R&A Chief Executive Mark Darbon said on Wednesday. The Scottish course last staged the tournament in 2009, five years before Trump bought the resort. Logistical problems, however, have meant the Open cannot return there until improvements are made in the local transport infrastructure. "I met a couple of months ago with Eric Trump and some of the leadership from the Trump golf organisation and from Turnberry. We had a really good discussion," Darbon said. "I think they understand clearly where we're coming from. We talked through some of the challenges that we have, so we've got a good dialogue with them." The 2009 Turnberry Open was attended by 120,000 spectators, compared with the 280,000 expected to watch this year's event in Portrush. "I think we've been extremely clear on our position in respect of Turnberry," Darbon said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Donald Trump to Meet UK PM Keir Starmer in Scotland to Finalize Trade Talks
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he expects to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer later this month in Aberdeen, Scotland. The meeting aims to fine-tune elements of a U.S.-UK trade deal that both leaders initiated on June 16 during the G7 Summit in Canada. A White House official confirmed that Trump's visit to Scotland is scheduled from July 25 to July 29. He plans to visit both his Turnberry and Aberdeen golf courses, mirroring a similar trip made during his 2016 presidential campaign. The meeting with Starmer is expected to focus on unresolved trade issues, particularly involving tariffs on steel and aluminum. "We're going to have a meeting with him, probably in Aberdeen," Trump said. "We're going to do a lot of different things, also refine the trade deal that we've made." The current trade agreement reaffirms tariffs and quotas on British automobiles while removing tariffs on the U.K. aerospace sector. However, negotiations continue over steel and aluminum duties, which remain a sticking point. Trump famously praised Britain's Brexit vote during his 2016 visit to Scotland, celebrating at Turnberry while accompanied by traditional Scottish bagpipers. Turnberry, a historic Open Championship course, was purchased by Trump in 2014. Looking ahead, Trump is also scheduled for a state visit to Britain from September 17 to 19. He will be the guest of King Charles at Windsor Castle, following a similar visit hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2019. (With inputs from agencies)
