KL Rahul feels 'strange' without Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma in the dressing room: 'Never walked into a team without them'

Hindustan Times5 hours ago

It seems as if KL Rahul, the experienced Indian batter, is missing Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Used to having at least one of the two senior India stalwarts besides him, Rahul finds being in a dressing room without them a 'bit strange'. The England Tests would be the first series since 2011 that the playing XI wouldn't feature either Kohli or Rohit. Rahul made his Test debut under MS Dhoni during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, but it was under Kohli that Rahul became the Test batter that he is.
Over the last few years, whenever Kohli wasn't around, Rahul had Rohit's arms around his shoulders. Now, to have them both suddenly gone is, without a doubt, a big shift in Indian cricket and inside the dressing room, but at the end of the day, the game must move on, as must Rahul. In their absence, Rahul realised that the onus is now on him, as one of the senior players in the team, to shoulder a lot more batting responsibilities than before.

"Virat and Rohit have been the pillars of Indian cricket for the last decade or so, and not having them around will be a huge miss. In my whole career so far, I have never walked into a team where there is no Virat or Rohit. The 50-odd Test matches that I have played, either Virat or Rohit or both of them have been there," Rahul told his IPL franchise Delhi Capitals ahead of the first Test, which begins tomorrow at Headingley, Leeds.
"To walk into that dressing room feels a bit strange. But of course, you have to respect their decision. They have given absolutely everything for the country and they will remain legends of Indian cricket. But it's time for the rest of us to step up."
This is Rahul's third Test tour of England. In nine Tests against the hosts, Rahul has scored 614 runs at an average of 34.11, including two centuries. His first 100 came at The Oval in 2018 but unfortunately ended up being in a losing cause as India lost the match by 130-odd runs and eventually the series 1-4. Three years later, Rahul etched his name on the Lord's honours board, scoring a sublime century and playing a big role in India's dominating 151-run win. This time around, Rahul, 33, is aware of the big match stakes. Coming off a fine season with the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, where he racked up 529 runs with three fifties and a hundred, Rahul said he began preparing for England the moment the IPL finished.
"I started with my preparations for the England series right after the IPL. I spoke to my coach as well to get prepared for this assignment. It's always a challenge coming to England as they are a pretty good side, especially when they play at home. It's going to be a challenge for all of us as we are a comparatively young team," added Rahul.

‘Is this the end of my career?': Jos Buttler's honest confession after Vaibhav Suryavanshi's historic IPL hundred

"A 35-ball hundred from a 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) made everyone stand up from their seats at the Sawai Mansingh stadium in Jaipur on the night of April 28. Not only the Rajasthan Royals created history but also etched his name into record books only to be remembered for lifetime. But what was going on Gujarat Titans' Jos Buttler's mind, who was just standing a yard behind, donning the big gloves? Like all of his Gujarat Titans teammates, Buttler too had no clue about what was happening as Suryavanshi dispatched almost every ball out of the park. 'Its inspiring and deflating at the same time,' Buttler told former England teammate Stuart Broad in a podcast. 'So this guy is 20 years younger than me and he's just smashing us l around the park,' added the Englishman, who used to don the Rajasthan Royals jersey in IPL 2024. Such destructive was Suryavanshi that the teenager struck India international Ishant Sharma for three big sixes an over which yeilded a massive 28 runs. He completed his century with a six off Rashid Khan. 'Our bowling attack consists of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Rashid Khan…scale of the sixes, they were not just going over but they were big sixes. 35-ball hundred, it was outrageous. I think after he had hit five or six sixes, he is not scared of us. I was thinking, is this amazing or is this the end of my career?' added Buttler with a cheeky smile. Rewarded for his impressive show in the IPL, Suryavanshi earned a place in the Indian U-19 team for the multi-format tour of England. Scheduled from June 24 to July 23, the tour comprises a 50-over warm-up match, followed by a five-match Youth One-Day series and two Multi-Day matches against England U19. India U-19 updated squad against England: Ayush Mhatre (Captain), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Vihaan Malhotra, Maulyarajsinh Chavda, Rahul Kumar, Abhigyan Kundu (Vice-Captain & WK), Harvansh Singh (WK), R. S. Ambrish, Kanishk Chouhan, Henil Patel, Yudhajit Guha, Pranav Raghavendra, Mohammed Enaan, Anmoljeet Singh, D. Deepesh, Naman Pushpak

'A lot said about no Rohit, no Virat...': Ben Stokes gears up for Shubman Gill's Team India challenge

Ben Stokes. (PIC - X) New Delhi: England captain Ben Stokes has revealed that even after there has been a lot of discussions over the absence of Former Indian Test captain Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli and mystery spinner Ravichandran Ashwin from the Indian lineup, it wouldn't make their replacements easy targets, as England gear up for a tough challenge against Shubman Gill's India. Speaking on the day before of the series opener at Headingley, Ben Stokes said that the fanous Indian trio's replacements are no less threatening. 'A lot said about no Rohit, no Virat, no Ashwin. That doesn't mean whoever will replace them will be easier to bowl or bat against. Three massive names, done wonderful things for the country,' Stokes said while speaking at the pre-match press conference. 'Jasprit Bumrah is a fantastic bowler. He is going to be a threat, but focusing on one individual isn't what we are going to be doing. Exciting time for Indian cricket with the new leadership role for Shubman Gill,' Stokes added. The England captain welcomed the return of experienced all-rounder Chris Woakes, looking forward to his team's unbeaten run with him under the current captaincy. 'Since Baz (Brendon McCullum) and I have been together, I don't think we have lost a game when Woakes played. Good to have him,' Stokes said. 'Headingley is generally the better cricket wicket overall. Let's see what the weather has in store,' Stokes added. 'To get to the WTC final, we need to win matches. That's what we need to focus on… the series ahead of us. If we win matches, we will reach the final. And if we get there, we will look to win that too,' Stokes said.

It's not going to be easier for us despite absence of Rohit, Kohli and Ashwin: Ben Stokes

Leeds: Ahead of the first Test of the five-match series, England captain Ben Stokes said that despite being without their three experienced players - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R. Ashwin - it is not going to be easy for the hosts to dominate the Shubman Gill-led team because of the gigantic talent pool of the Indian cricket. Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from the red-ball format last month, while Ashwin called time on his international career last year during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Gill's era, which is starting with the new World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle for India at Headingley on Friday, India have a herculean task of filling the big boots of the stalwarts and approaching the future with a clear mindset. "There's been a lot said about no Rohit (Sharma), no Virat (Kohli) and no Ashwin. That doesn't mean that we think it's going to be any easier than it ever has been against India. The pool of talent that Indian cricket has is just ginormous," Stokes said in the press conference on the eve of the series opener. "So, although Virat, Rohit, and Ashwin have done amazing things for their country on the field, that doesn't mean that whoever comes in to replace those individuals are going to be any less hard to bowl that out back in just because of how big the pool of talent is in India. I've spent a lot of time out of the IPL, so I know that there's a lot of it. Obviously, three massive names, three people who have done wonderful things for their country, but it's not going to be any easier for us because of those three big names out here," he added. Stokes added that his side's sole focus is limited to the India series and not thinking beyond. "Well, look, I think first and foremost, obviously it's five games against India that we're focusing on. We know it's going to be tough, as always against India. Five Test matches are very demanding on the body. So, yeah, we'll be focusing on these five games first," he said. On Chris Woakes leading the pace attack in the first Test, the all-rounder said his inclusion adds value to their side. "Since me and Baz (Brendon McCullum) have been together, I don't think we have lost a game when Chris Woakes played. Good to have him. "So, again, that just proves how valuable a cricketer is to any team that he turned out for. I think he, being the leader of the attack, is going to thrive off that responsibility. And, yeah, he's a quality critic, as you know, the relentless that he has with the ball, whether that be a new ball or a ball," he added. Stokes returned to competitive cricket last month after recovering from a left hamstring injury and is feeling "great" physically. "Physically, well, I mean, when I was 20, I didn't even know what stiffness or anything was. Obviously, now, 34, you know, everything is just naturally just a little bit harder to do," he said. "But I've worked hard to be where I am here today and, you know, physically where I'm at. It's great, you know, ready to go and just a bit more sensible, I guess, about my build-up. You know, work hard for, you know, the first two training days, two days out, and then, you know, sort of very, very chill than like the day before, just to make sure that everything is going to go come game day," Stokes added.
