Britain's Ocado says priority is to turn cash flow positive in 2025/26

CNA17-07-2025
LONDON :Ocado, the British online supermarket and technology group, said its priority was to generate cash, rather than consume it, in its next financial year, as it reported a 76.5 per cent rise in underlying earnings in its first half.
The group runs an online supermarket through a joint venture with Marks & Spencer, though its value is mainly driven by the sale of its cutting-edge robotic warehouse technology to retailers around the world.
It said on Thursday its core priority was to turn cash flow positive during its 2025/26 year - which starts in December - by reducing its costs, and be full year cash positive in the following year.
Shares in Ocado have fallen 35 per cent over the last year, reflecting market anxiety at the pace of new site openings for its existing grocery retail partners and a lack of technology deals with new partners.
The group said it made adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA), its preferred measure, of 91.8 million pounds ($122.9 million) in the first half of its 2024/25 year, up from 52.0 million in the previous corresponding period. Revenue rose 13.2 per cent to 674 million pounds.
Ocado said its expectations for the full year were unchanged.

Rolls-Royce raises profit and cash flow outlook after strong H1

[LONDON] British aero-engineer Rolls-Royce raised its full-year outlook for both operating profit and free cash flow on Thursday (Jul 31) after it navigated supply chain challenges and tariffs to deliver a strong first half. The company, whose engines power Airbus's widebody planes and some Boeing 787s, increased the top end of its operating profit guidance by £300 million (S$515.2 million) to £3.2 billion and its free cash flow by £200 million to £3.1 billion. Chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic, who has turned around Rolls-Royce since joining at the start of 2023, said his multi-year transformation was continuing to deliver. 'Our actions led to strong first half year results, despite the challenges of the supply chain and tariffs,' he said. He said Rolls had improved the time its engines spend 'on wing', that is powering planes before needing maintenance – a key demand from its airline customers – and had improved the profitability of its maintenance services. Its power systems business had also grown by winning business from data centre and government customers, he said. They are up 74 per cent year-to-date against a 12 per cent rise in the FTSE 100. In its civil aerospace business, Rolls said it had renegotiated all of its original equipment contacts and its most onerous aftermarket contracts, boosting operating profit and cash flow in the mid-term. It is increasing the durability of its large engines to deliver a more than 80 per cent improvement in time-on-wing for its modern Trent engines by 2027. The company, which also has a defence business, reported underlying operating profit of £1.7 billion for the first half, against £1.1 billion a year earlier, with an operating margin of 19.1 per cent, up from 14.0 per cent. StanChart sets US$1.3 billion buyback as first-half profit outstrips forecasts

[HONG KONG/LONDON] Standard Chartered (StanChart) reported on Thursday (Jul 31) a higher-than-expected 26 per cent jump in first-half pretax profit, as a strong performance in the wealth, markets and global banking businesses boosted revenue at the lender. Emerging markets-focused StanChart also announced a further US$1.3 billion share buyback that it said would start imminently. The London-headquartered lender said that the reported pretax profit for the first six months of this year hit US$4.38 billion. That compared with US$3.49 billion a year earlier and the US$3.83 billion average of 15 analyst estimates compiled by the bank. Despite the strong results, StanChart kept its key performance targets largely unchanged, saying the global economy could suffer from the broader fallout of US President Donald Trump's trade wars. The bank, which earns most of its revenue in Asia and Africa, slightly raised its guidance for income this year, saying it now expected growth to be at the bottom of a 5 to 7 per cent range rather than below it. StanChart's trading business, its second-biggest revenue driver, registered a 28 per cent rise in operating income to US$2.4 billion, propelled by buoyant client trading amid rising market volatility following the US-initiated trade talks. Sign Up Sign Up Wealth management income shot up by 24 per cent as efforts to boost fee revenue paid off with inflows and the number of new accounts rising due to demand for wealth advice amid the market volatility. The bank has said that it will target US$200 billion in new assets and double-digit growth in income from its wealth business over the next five years, as part of a wider strategy to shift to higher fee-earning businesses. It said 135,000 new affluent clients joined the bank in the first half of 2025, bringing in US$28 billion of net new money. The lender also appeared to dodge the multi-billion dollar China-related write-downs which blighted rival HSBC's results announced on Wednesday, with StanChart reporting an impairment charge for the first half of US$336 million, mainly from its wealth and retail banking unit. The bank said that its exposure to Hong Kong's troubled commercial real estate sector was US$2.1 billion, less than 0.5 per cent of its total book, with provisions rising US$34 million in the second quarter of the year to US$116 million. The lender, however, warned that cash constraints on borrowers could lead to more impairments. REUTERS
