KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Road Transport Department (RTD) seized 13 worth nearly RM5mil during a statewide Operasi Khas Luxury conducted from July 1.
State director Mohd Misuari Abdullah said the operation, which targeted imported and luxury vehicles, was conducted to ensure adherence to road transport laws.
He said the main offences detected included expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM) under Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, no insurance coverage under Section 90(1), driving without a licence under Section 26(1), and document falsification under Section 108 of the RTA 1987.
"More worryingly, there are luxury car owners who go as far as using fake registration numbers to avoid detection by the authorities, as well as cases of luxury vehicles being driven by foreigners without valid driving licences," he told reporters here on Sunday (Aug 10).
He said among the vehicles subjected to enforcement action were Toyota Vellfire, Toyota Alphard, BMW 523i Limousine, Ford Mustang Fastback, Mercedes E250 CGI, Nissan GTR, and several other luxury models.
Mohd Misuari said owning a luxury car is not an excuse to dodge the law, and RTD will continuously monitor the conduct of the vehicle owners involved.
Meanwhile, from January to July this year, Kelantan RTD recorded 10,233 offences involving expired LKMs, 8,432 cases of no insurance coverage, and 11,004 cases of driving without a licence. - Bernama

Project lead pleads not guilty to 68 charges of money laundering

In the dock: Vikram being escorted to the Shah Alam Sessions Court for the money laundering trial. — KK SHAM/The Star SHAH ALAM: It took a whole hour for 68 charges of money laundering against a part-time project manager to be read out in court. The accused, R. Vikram Menon, 46, claimed trial for allegedly laundering RM688,916.85 by transferring and disposing the monies between Oct 17, 2023, and Oct 15, 2024. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. He had allegedly carried out the activities around Bandar Sri Damansara through 301 transactions for fund transfers to 67 bank accounts as well as 159 online and cash disposal transactions, ranging from RM1,000 to RM90,463.33. The charges were framed under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 against Vikram before Sessions Court judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud yesterday. The offence, which is punishable under Subsection 4(1) of the same Act, carries a jail term of up to 15 years and a fine of at least five times the amount involved or RM5mil, whichever is higher, if found guilty. Awang Kerisnada set bail at RM70,000 with one surety and ordered Vikram to surrender his passport to the court, refrain from making contact with any of the prosecution witnesses as well as report to the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters every month. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Wan Nur Amanina Wan Din asked the court to set bail at RM80,000 but lawyer S. Kulasegaran sought for the amount to be reduced to RM30,000, stating that bail was to ensure court attendance and not act as punishment.

Bentley, Porsche among luxury cars worth RM6mil seized by RTD

MELAKA: The Melaka Road Transport Department (RTD) seized seven luxury vehicles, estimated to be worth almost RM6 million, during "Op Khas Luxury" (Special Luxury Operation) conducted from July 1 until today. Its director, Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop, said the seized luxury vehicles, which include brands like Bentley, Porsche, BMW, and Toyota Alphard, were impounded for various offences, including expired road tax and lack of insurance coverage. She said that common excuses given by the owners or drivers of these vehicles were that they "overlooked" or "forgot" to renew their road tax and insurance. "The latest luxury vehicle seized was a Toyota Alphard driven by a Myanmar national with six other men of the same nationality, traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Baru. "The seizure took place at the Jasin toll entrance around 10am this morning. "The driver did not have a valid driver's license, and none of them had valid travel documents before being handed over to the police for further action," she said at a press conference on Op Khas Luxury and Op Pemandu Warga Asing (PeWA) (Foreign Driver Operation) here today. Also present were the Deputy Director of the Melaka RTD, Khairul Aswad Abdul Halim, and the Head of the Melaka RTD Enforcement Division, Zulhilmi Zaidie. Siti Zarina said that a check revealed that the owner of the Toyota Alphard is a local citizen while a detailed investigation is underway to examine various aspects, including whether the vehicle was rented to the foreigners involved. She said Op Luxury was launched simultaneously across the country on July 1, focusing on strengthening enforcement against imported and luxury vehicles that fail to comply with road regulations and laws. In another development, she said 36 motorcycles ridden by foreigners were also seized under Op PeWA (operation codenamed Op Pewa for vehicles operated by foreigners), which was conducted around the state today. "The foreigners riding motorcycles were from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Rohingya, Myanmar, and Vietnam. "The main offences detected were driving without a license, expired road tax, and a lack of insurance coverage," she said.
