Oldham battle from behind twice to earn promotion to Football League

An early own-goal from Manny Monthe had given the Shrimpers the lead, but was cancelled out by Joe Garner's penalty after Monthe had been brought down in the area.

Oldham boss Micky Mellon unsurprisingly named the same starting XI which won 3-0 against York in the semi-final, only to see his side concede their first goal of the play-offs with just four minutes on the clock.
Gus Scott-Morriss pounced on a loose pass in midfield and chipped the ball into the area for Charley Kendall to chase and his presence was enough to pressure the unfortunate Monthe to loft the ball over his own goalkeeper.
Garner came close to an equaliser when his header from Tom Pett's corner came back off the post and Oldham felt they should have had a penalty when Mike Fondop went down in the area under a challenge from Harry Taylor.

Taylor did not appear to get much of the ball but referee Elliot Bell waved away the appeals and the Oldham fans suffered more frustration in the last minute of the half as Fondop missed a golden chance to equalise.
A defensive clearance was charged down and left Fondop through on goal, but after clipping the ball over goalkeeper Nick Hayes he could only look on as it drifted agonisingly wide of the post.
It took less than a minute of the second half for Oldham to finally get back on level terms, Garner calmly scoring from the penalty spot after Monthe had been brought down in the area.

Neither side was able to find a winner in normal time but Southend regained the lead just seconds into extra-time, goalkeeper Mathew Hudson parrying a deflected cross from Scott-Morriss straight on to the head of substitute Chambers-Parillon to head into the empty net.
Oldham refused to throw in the towel and Norwood got them back on level terms for the second time when he latched on to a long ball through the middle and took a deft touch around Hayes before slotting the ball into an empty net.
And just two minutes later Oldham grabbed the winner as Harratt's curling cross evaded everyone in the area before nestling into the far corner to send the Latics fans wild.

Insults and gestures exchanged between Richardson Hitchins and George Kambosos Jr in face-off ahead of bout

Richardson Hitchins and George Kambosos Jr proved they are hardly the best of friends ahead of their IBF super lightweight clash, exchanging insults at the Empire State Building. The pair met at the iconic New York Venue to face-off for the first time during fight week, with Hitchins defending his title against challenger Kambosos Jr on Saturday, June 14, live on DAZN. It will be Hitchins' first defence after winning the belt off Liam Paro in December 2024, taking a split decision win away from home in Puerto Rico. Kambosos Jr said that he aims to spoil Hitchins' Big Apple homecoming, pointing out his two previous wins at the Garden. The Australian defeated American Mickey Bey in 2019 before shocking Teofimo Lopez to claim the WBA, IBF, and WBO lightweight titles in 2021. Highlights of the pair's lowbrow conversation included Hitchins trying to set a wager with Kambosos, initially betting $50,000 that he was going to win at Madison Square Garden before raising the stakes to $100,000. Kambosos' mind games centred on claiming that Hitchins lacked oral hygiene, telling his opponent on multiple occasions that 'your breath stinks'. Hitchins claimed: 'You know I ain't going nowhere. Run from you? You ain't got nothing for me. I promise I'm gonna stop you. Right in your face all night. Easy work, easy f*cking work. 'I've been here a billion times, (I'm) world champ for a reason. This sh*t ain't going nowhere, it's saying in New York. He don't believe in himself. I bet you I stop you, you bum. F*ck you. He's getting knocked the f*ck out.' Kambosos Jr's response had slightly fewer swears, stating: 'I know where you're going – run, run, run, run, run. Your breath stinks bro, you stink. That talk's easy, brother. I'm smarter than you.' After first meeting in the bowels of the Empire State, the duo renewed their war of words on the rooftop shortly after. This time Kambosos Jr started the insults, beginning: "Look at ya, you skinny-looking thing. You look scared. I can't talk with this guy; this guy's breath stinks." Hitchins was undeterred, replying: "I promise you, you will not be saying what you're saying after the fight. I promise you, bro. I'm not Lomachenko." The reigning champion then pressed Kambosos Jr about their wager, saying his opponent had shaken on it. He restarted: "Bet that $50,000 then. How (do) you shake on it and then take it back?" Kambosos Jr stated that he instead planned to stake the same amount with the bookies, who have priced the contender at 7/1. "I spoke to my financial advisor - why the f*ck would I bet $50,000 on you, one-on-one, when I could put my $50,000 on $7 odds? "That's $350,000 bro." When Hitchins pointed out that they had already shaken hands, Kambosos made a vulgar gesture with his nether regions, telling his opponent to 'shake on that'.

Nick Townsend leaves League Two Newport County for Eastleigh

The 30-year-old goalkeeper entered negotiations with the Exiles at the end of last season but opted for a fresh challenge after seven years at Rodney Parade. The Antigua & Barbuda international, who racked up 209 appearances to become a County great, will now drop out of the Football League to play for the Spitfires. Eastleigh finished 13th out of 24 in the National League last season and Townsend will play under a boss who is a former goalkeeper, former Southampton, Wimbledon and Ipswich stopper Kelvin Davis. It is fair to assume that the contract length and financial package made the move to the south coast more attractive than staying in League Two on fresh County terms for stalwart Townsend. Arguably the Exiles are only still in the fourth tier thanks to his performances, particularly in a vital run of wins in February. LEGEND: Goalkeeper Nick Townsend passed 200 appearances for County (Image: Kian Abdullah/Huw Evans Agency) 'I'm glad it's all done now and it's an exciting start for me and my family to have a fresh start down here,' said the Brummie, who made the second most amount of saves in the EFL last season behind Stoke's Viktor Johansson. Townsend faced Eastleigh twice in 2024 when County earned a shot at Manchester United in the FA Cup by winning a replay at Silverlake Stadium 3-1 after a 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade. County currently have just one goalkeeper, Jacob Carney, on the books after the departures of Townsend and Lewis Webb, who failed to make an appearance after arriving midway through last season as back-up. Carney struggled when he got chances in his first season in Newport and the Exiles are closing in on a new stopper, who is likely to be first choice. 'Manager David Hughes has been prioritising a replacement and the club has already agreed personal terms with a new number one, due to be announced in due course,' said a County statement when confirming Townsend's exit. The Exiles are still in negotiations with three experienced players over fresh terms – centre-back James Clarke, midfielder Aaron Wildig and full-back/midfielder Shane McLoughlin.

Ker balances Wrexham AFC going for it and consolidation

It's a topic that Reds' executive director Humphrey Ker has touched upon, with the club having momentum following back-to-back-to-back promotions from the National League. However, coupled with ambition is the realisation there's plenty of infrastructure work required at the club. Speaking to Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman on The Sports Agents podcast, Ker said: 'It's an interesting one, because we talk a lot in the building about momentum. Like, we know that a huge amount of the success we've enjoyed this year was built on the foundations of two seasons ago. 'Our starting XI on the game that we clinched promotion against Charlton... if we hadn't got a couple of injuries, I think you might have had seven, maybe, players starting that game who had been with us in the National League. 'So, for us, that momentum is really important and you think, weirdly, despite all the many, many challenges and that we've got infrastructure issues, we don't have a training ground. 'Our stadium's very small, there's a lot of things that make it a little bit more difficult for us at present, this might be our best shot to go through the Championship.' Ker touched upon the subject of clubs in the second tier with Premier League parachute payments, which has been reduced with Luton Town's relegation to League One. While a fourth successive promotion would be welcomed by the club, Ker wouldn't actually mind a mid-table finish as Wrexham prepare for their first season in the second tier in over four decades. He added: 'I mean, realistically, if someone offered me 10th place now, I'd absolutely bite your hand off and would not worry too much about promotion. 'We're about to pump a load of money into this brand new stand, which is more than a stand for us. It's going to be a club shop. 'It's going to be offices. It's going to be a whole raft of things that go beyond just having an extra 5,000 seats in the stadium. 'We've got to do a training ground as well. We've got an awful lot of stuff we need to do.'
