Both Cole Escola and Nicole Scherzinger won the leading awards at the 78th Tony Awards on Sunday.
Cole Escola has issued a clarification on their recently made quip in response to fellow Broadway star Nicole Scherzinger. After winning the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play at the 78th Tony Awards, Escola made a joke over Scherzinger's win for Sunset Boulevard. As soon as Nicole was announced a winner, the Oh, May! playwright and lead actor Cole Escole, who was doing a press interview, gave a bold reaction that didn't go unnoticed. Cole was accompanied by director Sam Pinkleton, who also appeared surprised by the announcement.
In a video going viral, someone in the background could be heard asking, 'Who is it?" when Sam dramatically said, 'Noooooo" after hearing Nicole's name. 'Wow. The speculating is over," Sam further added. Cole, who had also won the Best Actor award for their performance in Oh, Mary!, went on to repeat the statement before remarking, 'Four more years."
The comment instantly prompted laughter in the room, with many seemingly alluding to how much more time President Donald Trump has in the White House. It is worth mentioning that Nicole has been in the headlines over her positive sentiment toward Donald Trump's Make America Great Again slogan.
Cole Escola has been rude to Nicole Scherzinger since the 'Full Tonys Roundtable.' Meanwhile, Nicole's out there tearing up in her speech about how welcomed she felt by the theater community… guess some folks missed the memo on what community spirit actually means https://t.co/JGx4RwqlnF — unspassos (@Thiago_Passos) June 9, 2025
With Cole Escola's recent commentary on their fellow Broadway star sparking a debate among fans, the actor issued a clarification, refuting any intention to mock Nicole. 'When I made that joke, when I said 'four more years,' I meant it like, well, she won. She's who we got for the next four years, as if I think winning the best lead actress in a musical is the same as winning a presidential election," Escola explained.

They further went on to slam people on the internet for pitting Broadway stars against each other. 'I think it's sad. My only sort of beef right now is with Michael Arden, but I don't want to get into it," they added.
Earlier in 2024, the former Pussycat Dolls entertainer faced criticism for enquiring about Russell Brand's MAGA-inspired 'Make Jesus First Again" hat, only to apologise later. Many other screenshots also circulated online where Nicole appeared to have liked an Instagram post by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., where the politician showed support for Trump.

BTS star Jungkook issues apology for 'inadequacy and carelessness' over controversial 'Make Tokyo Great Again' hat

BTS member Jungkook has issued a heartfelt apology after sparking controversy by wearing a hat with the phrase 'Make Tokyo Great Again' during a rehearsal performance. The slogan, reminiscent of former U.S. President Donald Trump 's 'Make America Great Again,' drew sharp criticism from netizens in South Korea and beyond due to its perceived 'insensitivity' amid ongoing historical tensions between Korea and Japan. The incident occurred during rehearsals for fellow BTS member J-Hope's 'Hope On The Stage' final concert at Goyang Stadium. A photo of Jungkook wearing the hat quickly circulated online, igniting backlash across social media platforms. Responding to the controversy, Jungkook posted a formal apology on Weverse on June 14 KST, expressing remorse over the incident and taking full responsibility. 'Hello, this is Jungkook,' he began. 'My heart is heavy over the fact that I am writing this right after our reunion. I sincerely apologize for disappointing and displeasing many people through the hat I wore during rehearsal.' He went on to clarify that he had not understood the deeper implications of the phrase: 'It was due to my inadequacy that I went on stage wearing a hat without checking the historical and political meaning held in the words, and for that, I am deeply reflecting on myself. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo I'm just sorry.' Acknowledging the seriousness of the misstep, he added, 'There's no room for excuses. It was my inadequacy and carelessness which brought about this situation. From now on, I will act with greater care and consideration. I will humbly accept all criticism and judgment directed toward me for my mistake.' He concluded, 'The hat was disposed of immediately. Once again, I apologize.' Online reactions remain divided, with some fans appreciating Jungkook's swift and sincere apology, while others continue to express disappointment. 'He should've been more aware, especially considering the context,' one user wrote. Others noted that the phrase, while possibly intended as satire, was still inappropriate in light of complex regional sensitivities. The controversy comes at a significant time for BTS, as the group celebrates its 12th anniversary. Thousands of fans gathered on Friday for the annual FESTA celebration, many donning purple and carrying light sticks in honour of the group's legacy. With six of the seven members now discharged from mandatory military service, anticipation is building around the possibility of a full-group comeback.

BTS' Jungkook starts political stir with his hat: Why he had to apologise

Jungkook, South Korean boy band BTS' member, had to apologise for wearing a hat 2025 BTS Festa with slogan 'Make Tokyo Great Again' during his first public appearance after his release from the military service, sparking a political stir among the masses and a backlash. Jungkook immediately issued an apology. As photos of Jungkook from BTS Festa emerged, showing him wearing a hat with the slogan 'Make Tokyo Great Again,' many drew parallels to US President Donald Trump's politically charged 'Make America Great Again' phrase – also being adopted by Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko, accused of an 'anti-Korean' stance. Given Jungkook's massive fan following, many felt that wearing the hat was a careless and potentially offensive gesture on the singer's part. As he drew a massive backlash for his gesture, Jungkook issued an apology to his fans and to everyone who was offended. 'I am just sorry,' he said. Jungkook said he was 'careless' and from now on, 'he would think more deeply.' 'I deeply regret that I failed to properly recognize the historical and political significance of the phrase before wearing it. I fully acknowledge my lack of awareness and care that has led to disappointment and hurt,' he said. Koike Yuriko has faced accusations of holding an 'anti-Korean' stance and having ties to Zaitokukai, a group widely regarded as a hate organisation. The Japanese politician has also been criticised for allegedly refusing to acknowledge historical atrocities such as the Kanto Massacre. BTS members Jungkook and Jimin were released from South Korean military service – mandatory in the South for all men under 30 – bringing the K-pop supergroup closer to a reunion as they promised fans a 'better version' of themselves soon. More than a thousand fans gathered at the site of a press conference near the two Army bases on Wednesday, June 11, where singers Jimin and Jungkook were discharged. 'Thank you so much for waiting for us all this time,' Jungkook said, addressing his fans. 'Now that we've been discharged, I believe it's time for us to keep drawing the picture we've always envisioned. We'll make sure to prepare well and show you an even better version of ourselves.'
