BTS star Jungkook issues apology for 'inadequacy and carelessness' over controversial 'Make Tokyo Great Again' hat

Time of India13 hours ago

BTS member
Jungkook
has issued a heartfelt apology after sparking controversy by wearing a hat with the phrase 'Make Tokyo Great Again' during a rehearsal performance.
The slogan, reminiscent of former U.S. President
Donald Trump
's 'Make America Great Again,' drew sharp criticism from netizens in South Korea and beyond due to its perceived 'insensitivity' amid ongoing historical tensions between Korea and Japan.
The incident occurred during rehearsals for fellow BTS member J-Hope's 'Hope On The Stage' final concert at Goyang Stadium. A photo of Jungkook wearing the hat quickly circulated online, igniting backlash across social media platforms. Responding to the controversy, Jungkook posted a formal apology on Weverse on June 14 KST, expressing remorse over the incident and taking full responsibility.
'Hello, this is Jungkook,' he began.
'My heart is heavy over the fact that I am writing this right after our reunion. I sincerely apologize for disappointing and displeasing many people through the hat I wore during rehearsal.'
He went on to clarify that he had not understood the deeper implications of the phrase: 'It was due to my inadequacy that I went on stage wearing a hat without checking the historical and political meaning held in the words, and for that, I am deeply reflecting on myself.

I'm just sorry.'
Acknowledging the seriousness of the misstep, he added, 'There's no room for excuses. It was my inadequacy and carelessness which brought about this situation. From now on, I will act with greater care and consideration. I will humbly accept all criticism and judgment directed toward me for my mistake.'
He concluded, 'The hat was disposed of immediately. Once again, I apologize.'
Online reactions remain divided, with some fans appreciating Jungkook's swift and sincere apology, while others continue to express disappointment.
'He should've been more aware, especially considering the context,' one user wrote. Others noted that the phrase, while possibly intended as satire, was still inappropriate in light of complex regional sensitivities.
The controversy comes at a significant time for BTS, as the group celebrates its 12th anniversary. Thousands of fans gathered on Friday for the annual FESTA celebration, many donning purple and carrying light sticks in honour of the group's legacy. With six of the seven members now discharged from mandatory military service, anticipation is building around the possibility of a full-group comeback.

WWE Hall of Famer slams TKO over Roman Reigns, Jey Uso treatment

Image via WWE W WE legend Rikishi has launched a scathing attack on the company's creative direction, accusing them of disrespecting his family's legacy - especially Roman Reigns and Jey Uso. The outspoken Hall of Famer voiced his frustrations on his Off The Top podcast, addressing recent decisions that he believes undermine the contributions of The Bloodline. From rumors of a pay cut for Reigns to Jey Uso's short-lived title reign, Rikishi believes WWE is making a 'big mistake' in how it's treating members of the Anoa'i dynasty - a family widely regarded as the greatest in pro wrestling history. Rikishi defends The Bloodline's legacy Rikishi's outrage was sparked by rumors suggesting WWE and its parent company, TKO, are considering reducing Roman Reigns' salary during his current break from TV. For Rikishi, such talk is deeply disrespectful, considering the impact Reigns has had on WWE's success in recent years. Fans were upset, and so was Rikishi. AND NEW! | Gunther dethrones Jey Uso for World Heavyweight Title: Raw highlights, June 9, 2025 He criticized WWE's writers for failing to support Jey's title run, saying they should be 'fired' for not being able to build around a rising champion. 'Would you have done this to John Cena or Randy Orton?' Rikishi asked. 'You give the title, and then give them nothing to work with? That's not fair.' Rikishi also pointed to past instances, like Jey's short Intercontinental Title reign - to show a pattern of what he calls missed opportunities for his son. He believes Jey's rise was earned through hard work, fan support, and years of dedication. With WWE seemingly moving in a new direction, questions loom over the future of The Bloodline. MAGA splits over Trump's backing of Israel

US President Donald Trump suggested that Israel's strikes could help his administration make a nuclear deal with Iran. TOI correspondent from Washington: MAGA isolationists are up in arms against US involvement in the Middle-East even as President Donald Trump has ostensibly bowed to pressure from the powerful pro-Israel lobby to throw Washington's support behind the Jewish state. Several Trump-supporting MAGA surrogates, including conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, former Trump aide Steve Bannon, and Republican lawmaker Marjorie Taylor-Greene, have broken ranks to oppose American involvement, saying it is betrayal of Trump's pledge to keep US out of foreign wars. Carlson has been vocal in his criticism, accusing Trump of being 'complicit' in Israel's attack on Iran and arguing that US funding and weapons supplied to Israel, which Trump boasted about on Truth Social, has placed Washington at the center of the conflict. "The real divide isn't between people who support Israel and people who support Iran or the Palestinians. The real divide is between warmongers and peacemakers," Carlson said on Friday, bluntly naming former Fox News colleague Sean Hannity, commentator Mark Levin, media baron Rupert Murdoch, and Jewish billionaires Ike Perlmutter and Miriam Adelson, among the provocateurs. Steve Bannon, a former Trump White House aide, also urged Trump to keep US out of the war, while Congresswoman Green questioned if Iran and its proxies are a danger to US national interests, saying "I don't think we should be fighting wars on behalf of israel...I have never seen a Houthi, or however you pronounce it, in my life..." However, many MAGA Trump acolytes, including Hannity, Senator Lindsey GRaham, conservative radio host Mark Levin, and social media gadabout Laura Loomed, backed the President's support for Israel because of its pursuit of nuclear weapons, although Trump's intelligence czar Tulsi Gabbard, another anti-war figure, testified in March that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon. 'The IC [Intelligence Community] continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon and Supreme Leader Khamenei has not authorized the nuclear weapons program he suspended in 2003,' Gabbard said, while noting, however, that Iran's enriched uranium stockpile is at its highest levels, unprecedented for a state without nuclear weapons. While hardcore white Christian nationalists in MAGA are typically anti-Jew ("Jews will not replace us," is one of the chants heard in their rallies), the broader MAGA base is distinctly anti-war, blaming US involvement in foreign wars under both Republican and Democratic administrations among reasons the country has racked up a massive $ 36 trillion debt. Polling by some MAGA principals shows isolationist sentiment is still strong in the MAGA base, and President Trump's support for Israel is not shared among the rank and file.

‘Politically motivated': Minnesota lawmakers Melissa Hortman, John Hoffman killed in fake cop attack; statewide manhunt underway

Two Minnesota lawmakers were shot in their homes early Saturday in what authorities are calling a 'politically motivated' attack by a suspect who may have posed as a law enforcement officer. A statewide manhunt is underway. Governor Tim Walz confirmed that former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in the attack. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot, with Hoffman reportedly wounded. The shootings occurred in separate residences in districts located north of Minneapolis. 'This was a targeted, politically motivated shooting,' Gov. Walz said. Authorities are still investigating the attacker's motive and identity, but a source familiar with the case told The Associated Press that the suspect may have impersonated a police officer to gain access to the victims' homes. Law enforcement agencies are in the early stages of what is being described as a complex investigation. The shootings have shocked Minnesota's political community and come at a time when elected officials across the US are facing growing threats and harassment amid heightened political tensions. John Hoffman, a Democrat first elected to the state Senate in 2012, is also a consultant and former vice chair of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Biwas: Scholarships You Can Apply For (Start Now) College Scholarship | Google Search Search Now Undo He lives with his wife and daughter. Melissa Hortman, a Democrat and former House speaker, was first elected in 2004. A lawyer by profession, she is survived by two children. She had recently taken on a leadership role in the state Legislature. The gun violence prevention organisation GIFFORDS, founded by former US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, issued a strong statement condemning the shootings. 'I am horrified and heartbroken by last night's attack on two patriotic public servants,' Giffords said. 'An attack against lawmakers is an attack on American democracy itself.' Giffords survived a 2011 assassination attempt that killed six people and injured 12 others during a public event in Arizona. She stepped down from Congress the following year to focus on recovery and advocacy work. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the manhunt continues for the suspect behind Saturday's deadly assault.
