LBP canal renovation in Erode to be over by August 15: WRD
Officials informed that 94% of the renovation work has been completed and that water will be released for irrigation from the Lower Bhavani Dam only after the work is fully completed and it is not possible to open the water in advance.
The LBP Canal supports an extensive ayacut area of 2,07,000 acres, providing water to thousands of farmers who rely on it for cultivation and livelihood.
To enhance the structural integrity and water-carrying efficiency of the canal system, comprehensive renovation works were initiated in 2021. This project is being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 709.6 crore.
Renovation work is carried out on the canal on days when water from the dam is not released for irrigation.
There has been a demand among farmers and political parties to release water from the dam for the first phase of the LBP irrigation ahead of the usual date of August 15.
A senior WRD official in Erode said, "As of last year, 85% of the renovation work has been completed and the remaining work resumed after the end of the irrigation season on April 30. It is currently in progress at 115 locations.

The Barda Wildlife Sanctuary spans 192.31 sq. km across Porbandar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts. Barda is emerging as a second home for Asiatic Lions. After the natural migration of lions to the area in 2023, the lion population has grown to 17, including 6 adults and 11 cubs. The sanctuary is a significant biodiversity hotspot and a key area for the conservation of Asiatic Lions. Being in the vicinity of the Dwarka- Porbandar-Somnath tourist circuit, the Barda area holds a significant tourism potential. A safari park in about 248 Ha area is planned to be initiated for which land have been allocated by the State Government. Wildlife conservation works amounting to about Rs 180.00 crore will also be launched at the event. The event will also be joined through satellite communication by the lakhs of students from the schools and colleges across the 11 districts of the Greater Gir Lion Landscape.

Every drop counts: Jangaon's low-cost rainwater harvesting pits show the way forward
Hyderabad: As 'every drop of water counts', a 'low-cost' water harvesting pit initiative in Jangaon district has caught national attention. To conserve water, govt employees in Jangaon have joined a voluntary effort and constructed nearly 7,175 rainwater harvesting pits on a war footing. It is estimated that this effort would yield at least one TMC of water, increasing the groundwater levels over a period of time. The National Water Mission (NWM), ministry of Jal Shakti, department of water resources, Govt of India, has lauded the "people-driven, 'low-cost' water conservation structures". "Every drop counts and every department can make a difference," the NWM said on August 7, detailing how the mission was accomplished. NWM director Archana Varma appreciated the Jangaon administration for the initiative, under which govt employees constructed the rainwater harvesting pits by chipping in from their own pockets. Collector Rizwan Basha Shaik, who launched the initiative, 'Mana Jilla Mana Neellu', on July 5, asked the employees to get at least 5,000 pits dug up at govt offices, school buildings, and hospital premises. The local gram panchayat was tasked with the responsibility of providing stones and mud by lifting them from collapsed structures or wherever available. The alarming groundwater situation in the district pushed the district administration into mission mode to construct rainwater harvesting pits. According to official statistics, the district average of groundwater levels was 4.84m in Jan 2022, which was in stark contrast to 10.21m in April 2025. An appeal has been made to the public to construct water harvesting pits at their houses and around borewells so that surface runoff is collected and percolates into the ground, which will help replenish wells and borewells. The low-cost percolation pits being constructed are one metre in length, one metre in breadth, and one metre in depth. Each pit will have a capacity of 1,000 litres. Officials said it could make a significant difference if 50,000 such pits are constructed, and plans are afoot to achieve this over a period of time. Collector Rizwan Basha said the idea was to ensure that every house has a rainwater harvesting pit, with the voluntary participation of everyone. Gujarat govt launches new scheme to improve school infrastructure
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat govt has announced a new financial assistance scheme aimed at improving the infrastructure of granted secondary and higher secondary schools across the state. In a resolution issued by the education department, detailed guidelines have been set for schools to qualify for the scheme, which links aid eligibility to student attendance, board examination performance, and "Gunotsav" evaluation results. The assessment will take into account the past three years' board results, three years of Gunotsav grades, and the average attendance in the previous academic year. Only institutions with buildings owned by their managing trust or board will be considered. To qualify, schools with Classes 9 and 10 must have at least 50 students enrolled, while those offering Classes 9 to 12 must maintain a minimum of 100 students. Under the scheme, the state govt will bear 80% of the sanctioned project cost, with the school management contributing the remaining 20%.
