Slovakia festival hosting Kanye West cancelled after 'Heil Hitler' furore

Yahoo11-07-2025
The Slovakia festival due to welcome Kanye West next week has called off the event following the uproar over the US rapper's May release of a song glorifying Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
Before the July 20 gig was cancelled, Bratislava's Rubicon hip hop festival was set to be West's only confirmed live performance in Europe this year.
Though he has won 24 Grammy Awards over the course of his career, the erratic rapper has become notorious in recent years for his increasingly antisemitic and hate-filled rants.
West, who has legally changed his name to the shorthand "Ye", released the song "Heil Hitler" on May 8, the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
In the wake of the announcement of West's appearance at Rubicon, thousands of people signed a petition against the gig.
The rapper -- a vocal supporter of US President Donald Trump -- is "repeatedly and openly adhering to symbols and ideology connected with the darkest period of modern global history", two groups behind the petition said.
In a statement on Instagram late on Wednesday, the festival's organisers said the decision to cancel the event was "due to media pressure and the withdrawal of several artists and partners".
"This was not an easy decision," the organisers said, without drawing a direct line between the rapper's planned appearance and the cancellations.
Contacted on Thursday by AFP, the Rubicon festival did not offer further explanations.
Styling itself as the central European country's premier hip hop hang-out, the Rubicon festival was set to run from July 18 to 20.
US rappers Offset and Sheck Wes were set to share top billing with West.
Australia cancelled West's visa on July 2 over "Heil Hitler", in which West raps about his custody battle with ex-wife Kim Kardashian before the song ends with an extract of a speech by the Nazi dictator.
West's wife, Bianca Censori, is Australian.

Trump put a tariff on gold — or did he? What you need to know about the bullion confusion

Gold futures soared to an all-time high of US$3,534.10 per ounce on Friday after reports that the Trump administration was moving to impose tariffs on certain gold bars. But the precious metal, which has been on a tear in recent months, came off those highs later in the day, when the White House said a clarification regarding 'misinformation' about a bullion tariff would be forthcoming. Here's how things played out throughout the day and where they stand now. What happened? Gold prices surged on Thursday after a letter from the U.S. Customs Border Protection Agency was published, suggesting that levies would be imposed on one-kilo and 100-ounce gold bars because of the 'reciprocal tariffs' that Trump announced earlier this year. The letter, dated July31, was in response to a request sent by a U.S. firm that wanted clarification on the tariff classification for gold bars from Switzerland. Numerous media organizations picked up the story on Friday after it was first reported Thursday by the Financial Times. The news surprised gold investors, and gold futures rose to an all-time high on Friday morning, before cooling down a bit in the afternoon. Why would Trump place levies on gold bars? Speculation about the reason for the tariff was rife. Some industry insiders said that the latest move reflected the Trump administration's playbook of placing a tariff on anything he wanted to control. Others said that the move could be linked to Trump trying to pressure Switzerland into a deal. Switzerland is the world's largest gold refiner with up to 70 per cent of the world's gold melted and processed there. Trump has imposed a 39 per cent tariff on the European nation, which is the highest he has imposed among developed countries. The country's gold industry has already warned that the tariffs could severely impact the sector. But the speculation appeared to be moot later in the afternoon, when the Trump administration said that it would issue a new policy that would state that the imports of gold bars should not face tariffs. The White House said it intends to post an executive order in the near future to clarify what an official called 'misinformation' about the tariffing of gold and other specialty products, Bloomberg reported. Why have gold prices been rising more generally? Traditionally, gold has been viewed as a store of value or safe investment. It's an asset people generally turn to when the stock market isn't doing well or when they are unsure about the economy because gold manages to maintain its value. The spot price of gold has grown by more than 40 per cent in the last year and about 20 per cent in the last six months. But that doesn't mean gold is immune from market pressures. Like every other metal, it has cycles. For example, gold lost more than a quarter of its value between October 2012 and July 2013. Analysts then attributed the fall to factors such as a positive stock market and a recovering United States economy. Factors such as the general risk sentiment, high interest rates and the price of the U.S. dollar has contributed to the rise. Many analysts say the current rise in gold prices can be attributed to increased purchases by central banks, particularly the People's Bank of China, which is often seen as a preemptive defensive action to preserve economic independence as geopolitical turbulence rises. Bought gold bars from Costco in 2023? Here's how much they're worth now David Rosenberg: How did the Canadian market hit a new record? Gold exposure has helped Tariffs on gold bars would potentially help continue that good run and push gold higher, industry insiders say. What comes next? The United States is the largest owner of physical gold in the world and some analysts have suggested it might want a higher gold price. For instance, if the price of gold were to reach around US$4,000 an ounce, it would provide a gain of more than US$1 trillion in benefit to the U.S. Treasury, industry insiders say. • Email: nkarim@ Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

Owner of Trump-themed Texas burger joint faces deportation

The owner of Texas' Trump Burger may soon be deported as part of the president's mass deportation campaign, Homeland Security officials told The Post. Roland Beainy, from Lebanon, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in May after it was found he had overstayed his visa. The restaurateur, who opened his first location of the Donald Trump-themed burger joint in 2020, arrived in the United States on a non-immigrant tourist visa in 2019, DHS said. The visa expired in February 2024, but Beainy didn't leave and continued to live in the country illegally. 4 Trump Burger restaurant exterior featuring signage lauding the president. 'Under the current administration, ICE is committed to restore integrity to our nation's immigration system by holding all individuals accountable who illegally enter the country or overstay the terms of their admission,' DHS said in a statement to The Post. 'This is true regardless of what restaurant you own or political beliefs you might have,' the agency added. 4 Photo of Roland Beainy, owner of a Trump-themed Texas burger restaurant. 'This person has no Green Card, a history of illegal marriages, and an assault charge. DHS is actively pursuing all legal avenues to address this flagrant abuse of our immigration laws,' the agency added. The pro-Trump illegal migrant hit back at the feds' allegations against him, saying the allegations are 'not true' in a statement to the Houston Chronicle. 4 A portrait of Trump hangs above the order and pick-up areas at the burger chain. The Trump-themed burger chain opened in 2020 in Bellville and has since expanded to four locations across the Houston area. In a recent Facebook post, the casual eatery featured a video showing a Trump impersonator jokingly asking Latina diners for their green cards. The restaurant also sued its Kemah, Texas, landlord, Archie Patterson, in June, alleging he forced staff out and took control of the location, according to the Houston Chronicle. Patterson, however, accused Beainy of unpaid debts in his own lawsuit.
