Their friendship deepens, and she invites him to her sister's lavish wedding. The relationship faces challenges as caste-based prejudices lead to tragic events, including the loss of Muthu's beloved dog, Karki.

Film makes LGBTQIA+ community see red

Kolkata: Indraadip Das Gupta's 'Grihapravesh' is stuck in the middle of a controversy having outraged a section of the city's LGBTQIA+ community for queer erasure and depiction of guilt-bearing queer identity. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Released in the Pride Month, the film has garnered good footfall. Yet, a section of the queer community has flagged off the irresponsibility of the maker for dedicating it to Rituparno Ghosh who they insist never showed women being "victims" of closet homosexuals. Das Gupta's film, starring Subhasree Ganguly, Jeetu Kamal, Kaushik Ganguly, Sohini Sarkar and Suprovo Thakur, released last Friday. Kaustav Bakshi, professor in English in JU and author of "Queer Studies: Texts, Contexts, Praxis', told TOI that his student, Souhardyo Pramanik, had referred to the film saying it "needs to be bashed". "Souhardyo, who did a course in Queer Studies, was alarmed that such a film has been made and dedicated to Rituparno. Rituparno made three films which were identified as queer but he was creating the ground for years. His most queer film was 'Bariwali'. So were 'Chokher Bali', 'Antarmahal' and 'Raincoat'. But none of these are identified overtly as queer apart from 'Memories in March', 'Chitrangada' and 'Arekti Premer Golpo'. Ritu had an understanding of queer as a way of life and not as a means of sexual expression only. Indraadip might think he has made a homophilic film but a queer viewer will find problematic nuances in it," Bakshi said. Bakshi further pointed out that Rituparno made films when "queer" had not become a "thing" in India as it is today. 'Grihapravesh', Bakshi said, is more of a "premeditated film". Bakshi believes Das Gupta's film should have raised this question: Is a queer person marrying another person of the opposite sex, an act of cheating or is it an issue of bisexuality which is barely addressed in society? "The woman and the two men are victims of heteropatriarchy and not of each other. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It's problematic that the film missed that point and is rather making two men seem like grey characters," Bakshi said. Koyel Ghosh, managing trustee of Sappho For Equality, told TOI that the film suffers from "an intentional queer erasure". "Many queer and transpersons are forced to marry without consent due to pressure from the natal family. This pressure could be of various types, including physical torture, corrective rape, fear of eviction, mobility restriction to name a few. The notion that once queer and transpersons are married off they immediately are cured of their homesexuality is the fundamental reason why such coercive practices are done. To say that Meghdut (Jeetu Kamal) might have a possibility of falling for Titli (Subhasree) again reinstates that same belief. However, this notion is futile and further stigmatizes a community that is already subjected to bullying and harassment," Ghosh said. The entire narrative, Ghosh said, is from the perspective of the woman in this case Titli's situation. "It further villainises queer and transpersons whose narratives have been structurally silenced and marginalised," Ghosh added. The director is unfazed. "I am overwhelmed by the positive reviews from the audience. This includes those beyond the Bengali speaking audience. This film is my tribute to Rituparno Ghosh. More than the box office ticket sales and success, what warms my heart is the chatter around the film. A film like this transcends to the next level when it becomes a talking point in society. I am so pleased to know such a thing has happened with it," Das Gupta said.

Ed Sheeran reveals how Shah Rukh Khan pitched an idea for Sapphire music video: ‘We played for like three hours…'

Ed Sheeran's latest single 'Sapphire' dropped a couple of days ago, with an incredible music video that took the English artiste through the streets and beaches of India. The music video also featured actor Shah Rukh Khan and singer Arijit Singh, which added to the already prevalent Indian touch. In a recent video, Sheeran broke down the entire music video and talked about how his collaborations with Shah Rukh and Arijit came to be and his experience of shooting in India. Ed Sheeran dropped an behind-the-scenes video for 'Sapphire,' where he plays the entire music video on a projector and tells the story behind each shot. He begins with the shoot in Old Delhi and talks about swerving through spice dealers, traffic and cows while they got the shots they needed. 'All of us were wearing masks because of the strong smell of the spices, and at one point I took mine off and wondered, 'How bad could it be?' Instantaneously I was coughing my lungs out.' Sheeran also poked fun at himself filming on a beach, calling the shot his 'Chris Martin singing Yellow on the beach' impression. He then talked about shooting on the sets of Baahubali and professed his love for the same. 'That is a good movie; it is so epic,' said Sheeran before asking one of the crew members if he wanted to see the movie with him. From the sets of Baahubali, Sheeran moved to probably the most talked-about moment from his music video, which was the surprising cameo by Shah Rukh Khan. He revealed how the actor came up with the idea himself and is the only person he doesn't need to give context for because everyone knows him. Also Read | Ed Sheeran 'loves' Shah Rukh Khan and drinking coffee with Arijit Singh: 'These guys were some of the best…' Ed Sheeran said, 'He invited me round to his house to play paddle (presumably table tennis), and we played for like three hours, and then he pitched me an idea. I told him that I was there in Mumbai the next day as well, and we could have dinner together and then shoot the scene. So I recorded the Hindi lines for the song, which took some time. I came back, had dinner with him, and we shot his cameo.' Sheeran can be seen hugging Shah Rukh right after the shot. The singer then moved on to his adventures in Kolkata, where he met up with singer Arijit Singh in his hometown. In the video, Arijit and Sheeran can be seen riding around on a scooter as Sheeran exclaims, 'This is new,' to which Arijit replies, 'This is madness.' As the video continues, there is a clip of Arijit telling Sheeran that they have arranged a boat ride for him so that he can check out the river. Sheeran shared that he had his dad with him as well, and sailing through the river is 'one of the most memorable' memories he has with his dad. He also appreciated all the Indian musicians who played on the record and called them all 'phenomenal'. Other than that, he shared some pictures of himself playing football with kids in Shillong. 'Sapphire' is part of Ed Sheeran's upcoming album Play, which will be his eighth studio album. It is due for release on September 12.

EXCLUSIVE: Was it a challenge to cast Mohanlal, Prabhas and Akshay Kumar in Kannappa? Vishnu Manchu breaks silence

Vishnu Manchu, the popular actor and producer, is gearing up for the release of Kannappa, which is slated to release in theaters this month. While he plays a titular role in the much-anticipated mythological saga, Akshay Kumar, Mohanlal, and Prabhas will be seen in special appearances. In an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla, the actor-producer opened up about the challenges he faced while filming Kannappa. Vishnu Manchu talks about challenge of casting Mohanlal, Prabhas and Akshay Kumar Pinkvilla asked Vishnu Manchu if he faced any challenges to cast Mohanlal, Prabhas and Akshay Kumar in special appearances in one film. Manchu revealed how there were no challenges and everything worked smoothly. He said, "Nothing actually. For the people down there, I just asked them. They accepted it because of the long relationship I had. Mr Akshay Ji also, the minute he heard the script, he said okay. I had to reach him the proper way, and when I did, it was quite easy for me. All instantly." Watch Akshay Kumar and Vishnu Manchu's exclusive interview here- Further, elaborating on the challenge he encountered, Vishnu Manchu said, "The only challenge which I have is the VFX. I learned a lot with this film. I have seen the challenges VFX has. I have seen where the gaps are. So I have decided to study. I am the prochancellor of Mohan Babu University, and we have about 20,000 kids. We are probably one of the few in the country which run artificial intelligence quite aggressively. End of this year, I have decided to bring a course on VFX, a 3-year degree program. My aim is that in the next 5 years, I want to bring out some of India's finest VFX producers and VFX supervisors. If there was some challenge that I faced, it was only this." Manchu shared, "It wasn't too complicated also. Very minor work. It is something I feel embarrassed to talk about it also because I started a VFX company in 2002 when I first came back from US." Akshay Kumar was startled to learn about this. Manchu continued that he even worked for English films. He added, "I feel embarrassed that I didn't update myself. But with this film, I have learned and am still learning. But give me another year, and I will have some pioneers in the team. Akshay was quick to tease him and said, "One year and he will be Professor Vishnu." Vishnu Manchu and Akshay Kumar's movie Kannappa is slated to release on June 27, 2025.
