Nicola Walker's Annika won't return for a third series.
The 55-year-old actress starred as DI Annika Strandhed in two series of the detective drama in 2021 and 2023, but now UKTV, who broadcast the show on U+Alibi, have confirmed that, despite ending on a cliffhanger, audiences will be left hanging because there are no plans to make any more episodes.
A spokesperson told RadioTimes.com: "We are incredibly proud of the success of Annika on U+Alibi, but there are no current plans for a third series."
Annika was based on the BBC Radio 4 audio drama, Annika Stranded, in which Nicola also played the lead role, and was known for the Marine Homicide Unit detective regularly breaking the fourth wall to speak directly to the audience.
Nicola previously admitted it took some time to get used to the unconventional way of bringing viewers insight into Annika.
She said: "With most characters there is so much subtext. But there is no subtext with Annika because the subtext is her talking directly to you and telling you what she feels. By the end, we are going to know her as well as she knows herself.
"On the first day, I kept stopping and laughing. It felt so wrong. But by the end, I was so into it, I was flicking looks at the camera all the time. I'm very worried about my next job now – 'Why does she keep looking down the lens?' It might have ruined me for the future!"
But she explained the device was essential when it came to adapting the original audio drama.
Article continues below
She said: "When he started talking about a television series, my first question was, how would you populate the world which has previously only been in Annika's head? Nick [Walker, write] said immediately, 'We're going to break the fourth wall!'
"So, she still has Norwegian heritage, she is still an outsider, and she still has a different way of coping with life and work, but the hook is the fact that this is the only detective series where the audience is the silent sidekick. We are in cahoots with her."

Machine Gun Kelly breaks silence on Sydney Sweeney romance rumours
New dad Machine Gun Kelly and Sydney Sweeney have stayed in touch since appearing in Downfalls High together back in 2021 and it has now been claimed they are dating Blunt Machine Gun Kelly offered an abrupt three-word response to claim he and Sydney Sweeney are an item. Megan Fox's ex has kept us guessing after breaking his silence on his relationship status after their daughter's arrival earlier this year. The famous duo have been on and off for a few years but they are now said to have called it quits for good Speculation has grown that MGK, real name Colson Baker, 35, is involved with the American and he was asked about the truth behind the speculation during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. But he wasn't in the mood to confirm or deny he and Sydney are anything more than pals. It comes after Liam Neeson's son reacts to his dad's romance with Pamela Anderson. Viewer 'Kyle P.' submitted a question, which host Andy Cohen, 57, didn't shy away from putting to the rapper. "MGK, Kyle P. wants to know if there's any truth you and Sydney Sweeney were more than just friends?" he asked the musician. His blunt response left everyone guessing. "Kyle P....." he said. "Shut up dude!" He and the actress and producer Sydney, 27, have known each other since 2021, when they worked alongside each other in film Downfalls High, which MGK also directed. Back in June, he spoke out about his relationship with his child's mother and where he and Megan stand with each other. Machine Gun Kelly, 35, appeared on Friday's Today Show where he spoke positively about his ex and what the future holds. He said: "Megan is a great mom." He added: "She's killing it. I'm so excited." He then went on to talk about the sentimental meaning behind their daughter's name. MGK said that Saga's name represents him and 39-year-old Megan's experience of having a baby together. He discussed how the two of them went through a pregnancy loss. He said: "Coming back again, disappearing, coming back again. She is an epic story. And that's what Saga means." MGK added: "I'm also of Norwegian heritage so that's the Nordic goddess of storytelling." He then went on to talk about what he thinks his daughter might do in the future as he said he thinks she's got a "storytelling future ahead of her". MGK and Megan's relationship first began back in 2020 when they met on the set of crime thriller Midnight in the Switchgrass. MGK popped the question in 2022. They then went on to split in early 2023 before getting back together. Later that year Megan said that she had a miscarriage during their relationship as she made the sad confession in her poetry book Pretty Boys Are Poisonous. MGK also seemed to mention the loss in February 2024 in his song don't let me go where he sang: "How can I live with the fact / That my hand wasn't on her stomach when we lost the baby." It was in November of last year that Megan announced that she was expecting their rainbow baby but the couple then split up just a month after the announcement. The on-off couple's daughter was later born in March. Before being with MGK, Megan was married to actor Brian Austin Green for a decade. The exes were together for 16 years in total and are parents to three sons Noah, 12, Bodhi, 10, and Journey, eight. MGK is also a dad to his daughter Casie Colson Baker who is 15-years-old and he shares with his ex-girlfriend Emma Cannon.

Hit horror series with Hollywood A-lister AXED - as devastated fans fume 'how could they?!'
A hit horror series starring a beloved Hollywood A-lister has been axed by Disney+, leaving devastated fans fuming. The supernatural show Goosebumps, based on the R.L. Stine children's book series of the same name, has been cancelled after just two seasons. The first series aired shortly before Halloween, 2023, and the second saw Friends star David Schwimmer join the glittering cast in 2024. He starred alongside He's Just Not That Into You actor Justin Long, Eastenders ' Zack Morris and Gossip Girl's Ana Yi Puig. The recent series was the modern iteration of the original TV adaptation from 1995, and its cancellation has gutted new fans and old-school followers alike. Series three will not return to streaming platform Disney+, although there is talk of Sony Pictures Television selling the show to other potential networks. Variety reports the production company plans to 'explore different creative directions for the IP,' although the show's future is not a guarantee. David Schwimmer, 58, played Anthony Brewer in season two, a former botany professor and divorced father to twins Cece and Devin - played by Jayden Bartels and Sam McCarthy. The programme deviated from the method of its 90s predecessor, opting to explore one story per season rather than a new plot every episode. Fans of the series are crestfallen, and many flocked to social media to express their disdain for the studio's decision. 'Goosebumps deserved more!' wrote one, adding: 'The show had potential and a nostalgic fanbase - sad to see it go this soon.' Others felt the show's nostalgic streak worked in its favour, with one saying: 'Why cancel a show with nostalgia value when half the platform is filled with forgettable reboots?' 'They could have given us one last season,' lamented one commenter, and a fourth chimed in: 'How could they?!' Viewers were left on a cliffhanger after expecting another installment of the show. 'I was hoping it might get a new season,' said one, and another added: 'No, I loved the second season.' It comes as the BBC has quietly axed a fan-favourite crime drama which starred a huge actress after just two series on air in a blow to fans. Originally launching in 2021, the show had built up a loyal audience and bagged an impressive 83% Rotten Tomatoes score. However, Annika won't return for a third series, days after it arrived in a primetime slot on BBC One last week. A spokesperson for UKTV said: 'We are incredibly proud of the success of Annika on U&Alibi, but there are no current plans for a third series.' Starring Nicola Walker, the show's first home was U&Alibi and was originally based on BBC Radio 4 drama Annika Stranded. The 55 year old played the role of Detective Inspector Annika Strandhed, the head of Scotland's Homicide Unit. Other stars who appeared in the drama include Jamie Sives, Katie Leung, Ukweli Roach, Paul McGann, Silvie Furneaux and Sven Henriksen. Fans of the series are crestfallen, and many flocked to social media to express their disdain for the studio's decision Despite Nicola's on screen success she keeps relatively quiet about her family life and marriage to fellow actor Barnaby Kay. It is not known where the couple met, but they have a son named Harry, who was born in 2006. The cancellation comes after it was revealed Nicola's other show Forgotten, which airs on ITV, is reportedly facing the axe. Its writer Chris Lang has admitted he wishes to step down after the upcoming series in a blow to fans. The crime drama follows detectives as they delve into cold cases however the latest season received criticism from viewers who blasted ITV for 'ruining' it with 'woke and nonsensical' storylines. And now it seems the future of the show has been called into question with Chris' involvement uncertain. Speaking in an interview with the Royal Television Society he said: 'I'll probably hand on the baton after this series. I'll still be involved, but I've written 42 episodes and don't want to repeat myself,' The Sun reported.

Shameless ‘Britain's benefits queen' who bought a horse & designer vagina on welfare says she's ‘too old' to work at 43
Marie has admitted she feels guilty for taking taxpayers' money, but she argues there is no incentive to work MUMBELIEVABLE Shameless 'Britain's benefits queen' who bought a horse & designer vagina on welfare says she's 'too old' to work at 43 Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHE'S previously used benefits to buy a horse, a boob job and a vagina designer. But Marie Buchan, dubbed 'Britain's Benefits Queen', insists she is 'too old' to work at the age of 43. The single mum invited the TV host into her four-bed housing association property in Selly Oak, near Birmingham. Stacey Dooley spent two nights with Marie, who received £1,000 for filming, and helped her reluctantly sign up to a temping agency to find a carer's job. Although she went through with the application, Marie admitted that it's 'less stressful to claim benefits.' The 'benefits queen', who has kids aged 11 to 23, has seven children still living under her roof. During filming, Stacey, 38, slept on a blow-up mattress in the living room, and brought her own bedding to use and showered in a pre-booked Airbnb. The pair bonded over their love for horse riding and did it together on the show, as well as having a hair and nail pampering session. Speaking to FEMAIL, Marie shared: 'Stace did take me to task over not having a job and kept saying I had to look for work, and she was trying to be encouraging. 'I've done care work in the past and she thought I might want to do it again, but now I'm now 43 I think I'm getting too old to work. 'It is easier and less stressful to claim benefits which I still do and I am entitled to! The form was there in front of me, Stace was trying to support me, but was staring at me and I didn't know what to do. Octomum Marie Buchan sparks outrage after revealing plans to spend her benefits money on a HORSE 'I kept thinking, 'do I really want a job?', but felt I owed it to Stace so, damn it, I signed the form saying I was available for care work.' Marie said although she had applied for the jobs three weeks ago, she hasn't yet heard anything back from the employment agency. She added that she has her 'issues and insecurities' but 'encouraging' Stacey helped her build up her confidence. The single mum said she had been approached by producers to do the Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over show, and although she wasn't sure at first, she thought it could be a good way for people to 'get to know the real me.' 9 Single mum Marie has eight kids, with seven of them living with her at the moment Credit: BPM She added: 'There would be a fee paid which is always good to hear! I'm a much better person than the press make out so I said, 'what have I got to lose?.' 'The questions fired at me were quite intense. It was an emotional rollercoaster. 'I have no job and claim loads of benefits I am entitled to but people judge me and I have had so much negative press.' I've done care work in the past and she thought I might want to do it again, but now I'm now 43 I think I'm getting too old to work Marie Buchan Marie, who volunteers at a food bank two Saturdays a month, said she is tempted to 'splash' the £1,000 participation fee on herself, but will 'probably' buy a new cooker instead. The single mum has been in the system for over 23 years and has received around £500,000 in government handouts. In 2018 she caused widespread outrage after travelling to Turkey to get a £1,500 boob job, going from a 34A cup to a 34D. PUBLIC FURY 9 Marie also had a boob job and got a designer vagina with her benefits Credit: Roland Leon While she insists she paid for the treatment with money raised from car boot sales, it's likely that the goods she sold would have been bought using taxpayer cash in the first place. The following year, she hit the headlines again when it was revealed she jetted abroad for laser treatment to achieve a 'designer vagina' — again insisting she had paid for it with her car boot loot. 'I did fly abroad to get the surgery, but it's something I've come to regret,' she confesses. 'It was all a very big mistake and it's embarrassing for my kids.' Marie triggered public fury yet again when she decided to buy a horse with her benefits. 9 Marie was 19 when she had her first child and started using benefits Credit: SWNS 'I just wanted to buy myself something nice and I had been saving my money. It had always been my dream to own one,' she admits. 'I paid £600 upfront for the horse and then had to pay an additional £100 a month to keep him at the yard. Food was around £25 a month.' Looking back, Marie says she can understand why people were outraged. 'It was a big mistake. I was rubbing it in people's faces and I was showing off and I really regret that,' she says. 'He's now gone because I couldn't afford to keep him. Maybe if I go back to work I could buy another one.' TOUGH CHILDHOOD 9 Marie has worked on and off as a carer over the years Credit: BPM Despite her frequent Government-funded splurges, Marie hasn't always led such a charmed life. 'Growing up, my parents weren't wealthy. My dad was a window cleaner and my mum's disabled, so she got disability benefits,' she says. 'We were a big family – my nan had 14 children. We didn't have a lot, but we got by.' I have no job and claim loads of benefits I am entitled to but people judge me and I have had so much negative press Marie Buchan At the age of 19, Marie welcomed her eldest daughter Tia, and first entered the welfare system. 'I was in and out of work at the time as a carer. I'd come off benefits, have another child be back on benefits,' she says. 'It was a bit of a rollercoaster, so in the end I made the decision to stay on benefits as it gave me the time to bring up my children.' Many hard-working parents make the heartbreaking decision not to expand their brood due to cash constraints. 9 Marie always wanted a large family to 'look after her' Credit: Supplied But for Marie, having more kids has never been a concern. 'I'd always wanted a big family in the hope they would look after me when I was old and grey,' she says. 'I never thought about the financial impact of having eight children because it is just so easy to get help from the government. 'They even give you the form at the hospital to claim your child tax credit. They make it too easy.' Marie famously became a target for criticism when she appeared on This Morning in 2015 and claimed the proposed £23,000 a year benefit cap would leave her short. 'I was on £26,000 at the time, meaning I only had £500 a week to survive on,' she says. BIG BILLS 9 Marie has said she doesn't have enough money with her large family Credit: BPM Media 'We are a big family, so half of it would go on our food shop alone. 'We also had the rent, the council tax and bills to worry about. The council only paid £45 per week towards rent and £16 per week towards council tax.' In her 23 years of claiming benefits, Marie's annual income has fluctuated between £26,000 and £37,000. And while she admits she feels guilty for taking taxpayers' money, she argues there is no incentive to work. 'I believe we are better off on benefits, because we get help in every area of our lives, whether that's the rent, bringing up the kids, or bills,' she says. 'You can access food banks or fuel vouchers. There's a lot of help out there. "I've completed six college courses on mechanics and social work, but I'm still sitting here claiming my benefits. I've done nothing with them. 'It's very easy to sit in the system for the rest of your life.'
