ORLY, France — A control tower breakdown forced the cancellation of about 130 flights at Paris Orly airport Sunday, leaving thousands of passengers to scramble for alternative routes, officials said.
A spokesman for Aeroports de Paris, which operates the French capital's second busiest airport, said about 40 percent of the day's departures and arrivals had been called off.
France's DGAC civil aviation authority blamed "a failure of the air traffic control systems at the Orly tower early in the afternoon" for what it said had been a "significant" reduction in the number of flights.
An aviation source told AFP that a radar breakdown caused the airport chaos.
The airport spokesman said about half the 130 cancelled flights were departures and half incoming flights.
Flights across France and to other European destinations and North Africa were among those hit. The DGAC would not say whether flights would return to normal on Monday.
Stood near a line of suitcases, Agnes Zilouri, 46, tried desperately to find a seat for her 86-year-old mother and six-year-old son. The family had been meant to take a flight to Oujda in Morocco on Sunday evening to go to a funeral.
"The flight is cancelled. Fortunately I am with my mother," she said.
Last year Orly handled about 33 million passengers, approximately half the number of the main Paris Charles de Gaulle international airport. — AFP

Japan Expo visitors stranded overnight by halted train

Visitors sleep outside one of the venues overnight after a power outage abruptly shut down the Osaka Metro line linking the city to the 2025 Osaka Expo site, in Osaka early on August 14, 2025. Jiji Press/ AFP TOKYO — A sudden suspension of the sole train to Japan's Expo 2025 stranded more than 30,000 visitors, with some forced to spend a sweltering night near the station and more than 30 people sent to hospitals by Thursday morning. A power outage abruptly shut the metro line in Osaka on Wednesday night while a crowd was packed into the Expo site's station. As of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, around 30,000 people were stranded, the Expo organizer said. "So many people were packing the station that it felt like a steam bath," an elderly woman told local broadcaster MBS news. Many, including families with children, wound up sleeping on benches under the Expo's wooden "Grand Ring" or inside pavilions turned into shelters. By then, 36 people had been sent to hospitals for symptoms including headaches and dizziness, according to the Expo organizer. Bowing deeply, Osaka Metro officials apologized for "causing immense trouble" to those affected, blaming a short-circuit for the outage. Japan has been suffering a punishing summer heatwave, recording its hottest July since records began in 1898. Osaka last hosted the Expo in 1970 when it attracted 64 million people, a record until Shanghai in 2010. Last month, Expo organizers reported welcoming 10 million visitors, with the fair running until October. — Agence France-Presse

Lucio Cacace/ via REUTERS ROME — Italian firefighters on Sunday tackled a wildfire on the flanks of Mount Vesuvius, with all hiking routes up the volcano near Naples closed to tourists. The national fire service said it had 12 teams on the ground and six Canadair planes fighting the blaze, which has torn through the national park in southern Italy since Friday. Reinforcement firefighters were on their way from other regions and the onsite teams were using drones to better monitor the spread of the fire, the service said on Telegram. "For safety reasons and... to facilitate firefighting and cleanup operations in the affected areas, all activities along the Vesuvius National Park trail network are suspended until further notice," the park said in a statement Saturday. Nearly 620,000 people visited the volcano's crater in 2024, according to the park. The smoke from the fire could be seen from the Pompeii archeological site, which however remained open to tourists. Experts say European countries are becoming ever more vulnerable to wildfires due to intensifying summer heatwaves linked to global warming. — Agence France-Presse
