The Netherlands – a global leader in energy transition, recently announced electricity rationing as its national grid buckles under the pressure of increased demand, electrification, and renewable integration. It's a stark reminder that even highly developed economies can stumble when electricity systems remain overly centralized. For municipalities, especially those mandated to deliver electricity, this is a warning bell: Without change, they risk being stuck in the middle, expected to deliver power they can't control, afford, or plan for.
In South Africa, many municipalities already face this risk daily. Aging infrastructure, rising Eskom tariffs, and load-shedding have created a storm of operational and financial uncertainty. Tim Pfaelzer, Senior Vice President & General EMEA Manager at Veeam, has penned an op-ed, in which he states his belief that many organisations are guilting of fooling themselves when it comes to the strength of their own data resilience. For too long, business leaders have viewed their organization's data resilience from afar, relying on theoretical plans and a checklist mindset. This 2D perspective – where technical measures are simply ticked off a to-do list – fails to capture the full, real-world cross-organizational complexity of cyber threats. Ransomware, in particular, cannot be fully simulated on paper. This mentality has led to a dangerous false sense of security. Veeam research shows that more than 30% of organizations believe they are more resilient than they actually are. While they may have the right pieces in place, unless these elements work together in a rigorously tested, real-world incident response plan, they risk being exposed when a true crisis hits. With 69% of organizations having faced a ransomware threat in the past year, the time for blind confidence is over. Leaders must remove the wool from their eyes and take meaningful, proactive action. False Confidence, Real Consequences Data resilience can be deceptively complex, and gaps often remain hidden until it's too late. Many organizations fall into the trap of believing they are prepared, only to find out otherwise under attack. Of the organizations that fell victim to ransomware last year, 69% thought they were prepared beforehand. After experiencing an attack, confidence in their preparedness dropped by more than 20%. Although the majority of organizations had a ransomware playbook, less than half included essential technical components such as backup copies and containment or isolation plans. On the surface, everything may have appeared in order – but a closer inspection revealed significant vulnerabilities. The consequences of misplaced confidence are severe. Only 10.5% of organizations were able to successfully recover following a ransomware attack last year, leading to major business and operational impacts. The recent M&S ransomware incident is a high-profile example, causing not only service outages for customers but also an estimated £300 million hit to trading profits. The Evolving Threat Landscape Some organizations may have hoped that the disruption of major ransomware groups like BlackCat and LockBit by law enforcement would make the threat landscape easier to navigate. In reality, the threat has not diminished – it has evolved. Smaller groups and 'lone wolves' have quickly filled the gap, bringing new methods and tactics that further challenge organizational resilience. From 2D to 3D: The Path to True Resilience Regardless of how confident an organization may be in its data resilience, a deeper, more critical examination of its ransomware playbooks is essential. It is no longer safe to assume that what works on paper will hold up under real-life duress. Leaders must move from a flat, 2D perspective to a dynamic, 3D approach. Start with the big picture: Do you know what data you need to protect and where it resides? Are the key resilience measures, such as a predefined chain of command and regular backup verifications, in place? Drill down further: Are your security teams up to date on the latest attack trends? With 89% of organizations reporting their backup repositories targeted by threat actors, ensuring redundancy for your backups is now critical. Plugging the gaps is only the beginning. Organizations must stress-test their incident response plans with real-world simulations. It's not enough to rely on plan A – test plans B, C, D, and beyond, including scenarios where critical staff are unavailable or multiple crises occur simultaneously. This process often exposes blind spots that would go unnoticed in a theoretical plan. Turning Confidence Into Capability Leveraging frameworks like the Veeam Data Resilience Maturity Model (DRMM), developed in partnership with McKinsey, can help organizations move beyond blind confidence. Our findings show that organizations with a high degree of data maturity recover from ransomware incidents seven times faster than their less mature counterparts, and experience three times less downtime. By taking control of data resilience – grounded in rigorous testing, continuous improvement, and collective intelligence – organizations can replace blind confidence with real capability. In the current threat landscape, it's not a question of 'if' your organization will be attacked, but 'when'. The best time to prepare is now – because in data resilience, only true readiness will make the difference.

The African Energy Commission (AFREC) has concluded a three-day technical training workshop in South Africa aimed at enhancing the country's capacity to compile and manage comprehensive national energy statistics, a significant step toward strengthening energy data management in Southern Africa. Held from 30 July to 1 August 2025, the training targeted national focal points and key stakeholders in South Africa's energy and environmental sectors, including representatives from the Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE), the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). Of the 20 participants, 12 were women, underlining a gender-inclusive approach to capacity building. The workshop focused on the Energy Balance Questionnaire—one of AFREC's four core data collection tools, along with others on energy efficiency, prices and taxes, and power plant capacity—critical for developing accurate national energy balances and feeding into the continental Africa Energy Information System (AEIS). The initiative is part of AFREC's broader strategy to support African Union member states in building and maintaining National Energy Information Systems (NEIS) that inform policy and planning at both national and continental levels. "Reliable energy data is essential for informed decision-making and effective policy implementation across Africa," said Ms. Salome Maheya, Senior Policy Officer for Energy Statistics at AFREC, speaking on behalf of the Executive Director Rashid Ali Abdallah. "South Africa, as one of Africa's leading economies, plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the continent's energy data landscape reflects the reality on the ground." AFREC developed specialised training modules in 2023, validated by technical experts and regional coordinators, which formed the basis for the hands-on sessions. These included practical exercises and case studies designed to enhance technical understanding of energy data inputs and compilation processes. South Africa has previously faced challenges in completing the Energy Balance Questionnaire. This workshop, according to Mr. Robert Kwinda from the Department of Electricity and Energy, represents a turning point. "This training is not just about improving reporting—it's about strengthening South Africa's ability to contribute to a reliable continental energy database. It also enables us to align with international standards and better inform our domestic energy policies, emissions tracking, and forecasting." The workshop highlights growing regional cooperation around energy statistics, in support of Africa's broader goals for sustainable development, carbon emissions tracking, and energy security. Mitsubishi Power's Hydrogen Conversion Technology reduces 65,000 tons of CO2 annually at Egypt's key refinery Alexandria, Egypt - Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), announced today the successful completion and handover of a pioneering hydrogen fuel conversion project at the Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC) refinery in Egypt. This project is considered the first industrial application of hydrogen use as fuel in industrial boiler in Egypt and the MENA region. Under the terms of the full turnkey contract, announced in 2022, Mitsubishi Power undertook the design, engineering, supply and installation of the solutions, equipment, and control systems to rehabilitate and upgrade a 100-ton-per-hour main boiler, converting it from heavy fuel oil and natural gas to a 100% hydrogen fuel. The project also contributed to the utilization of 14,000 tons per year of hydrogen-rich gases available in the production units, reducing natural gas consumption by approximately 24,000 tons and contributing to a reduction of carbon emissions by approximately 65,000 tons per year. This project marks a significant step forward in Egypt's ambitious energy transition journey towards decarbonizing its energy sector and fulfilling its sustainable development goals, which reinforces its leadership in clean energy innovation. It also highlights the Japanese global leader's commitment to advancing carbon neutral power generation solutions and jointly reflects hydrogen's enormous potential as a clean energy source in Egypt's industrial sector. Mitsubishi Power's expertise in providing cutting-edge hydrogen technology solutions, coupled with ANRPC's operational leadership, contributed to the project's success, reinforcing its importance as a proven model for integrating hydrogen into Egypt's energy system and a replicable model that can catalyze further hydrogen adoption across Egypt and the MENA region.
