Nitish plans fresh round of teacher hirings before poll
'I have instructed the Education Department to immediately count the vacancies for teachers in government schools and take action to conduct the TRE-4 examination for appointments as soon as possible,' he posted on X.
In January, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary had announced that more than 80,000 teachers will be recruited in the fourth phase of TRE and with around 20,000 posts being carried over from TRE-3, the total number of vacancies will touch 1 lakh.
Mr. Kumar's instructions on Wednesday come on the back of a renewed push for job creation with polls on the horizon. On Tuesday, the Bihar Cabinet gave its nod for the creation of 1 crore jobs and 'employment opportunities' in the State over the next five years. The Chief Minister had recently also announced that over 10 lakh youth and 39 lakh people overall have been provided government jobs.
'Election slogan'
Reacting to the Chief Minister's announcement, Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal spokesperson Chitaranjan Gagan termed it 'a mere election slogan'.
'He is still asking for vacancies from the Education Department when the government already has the data. More than 3 lakh teacher posts are vacant in Bihar. If the Chief Minister's intentions are clear, he should immediately issue a notification for recruitment with domicile and start the process of recruitment,' Mr. Gagan said, predicting that the process will get stuck in the model code of conduct likely to be imposed when the Election Commission announces dates for the Assembly election.

While other plans like SAVE, PAYE, and ICR are currently blocked due to federal court injunctions, IBR was created by Congress and explicitly authorizes loan forgiveness after 20 or 25 years of qualifying payments. This sudden pause comes amid overall disruption in the federal student loan system, marked by massive processing delays, legal uncertainty, and significant policy shifts under the Trump administration. The Education Department has attributed the IBR freeze to 'system updates' in response to the SAVE-related court rulings, but critics and legal experts argue that no such updates should interfere with IBR discharges. The IBR plan is one of several income-driven repayment (IDR) options for federal student loan borrowers. It helps borrowers by lowering their monthly payments based on their income and family size. After 20 or 25 years of qualifying payments, borrowers are supposed to get their remaining loan balance makes IBR unique is that it was created by Congress, and unlike newer plans such as SAVE, it has clear legal authority for forgiveness. The Department of Education itself confirmed: 'ED can and will still process loan forgiveness for the IBR Plan, which Congress separately enacted.'The IBR pause is happening alongside massive disruptions across the student loan system: Over 1.5 million IDR applications are stuck in a backlog. The Department recently told borrowers on SAVE to switch to IBR, even though IBR forgiveness is currently paused. Interest will restart in August for borrowers previously under SAVE forbearance. Under the recently signed " Big, Beautiful Bill, " a new plan, the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), will replace SAVE, PAYE, and ICR. Current IBR borrowers will be allowed to stay enrolled and qualify for forgiveness, but new borrowers won't have access to the plan once RAP takes you've already reached your IBR forgiveness threshold but haven't received a discharge: You can continue making payments; any extra payments beyond your qualifying 20 or 25 years should eventually be refunded. You can also ask your servicer for a temporary forbearance, but be aware that interest will continue accruing during this time.

Will approach court if assent not given to establish college in Kalaignar's name: Higher Education Minister
The Tamil Nadu government will seek legal recourse, if necessary, to obtain the Governor's assent to a resolution passed in the Assembly to establish a college in memory of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in Kumbakonam, Higher Education Minister Govi. Chezhiaan said here on Monday. Speaking at a book release event at his official residence, Mr. Chezhiaan stated that he and the Higher Education Secretary had sought an appointment with the Governor to discuss this issue but did not receive a response. 'If the assent is not given soon, the CM has already stated that we will approach the court and seek assent,' he told reporters. He stated that the State government had attempted to contact the Governor by phone and had also written to him, but there was no response. 'The reason is he squirms when he hears the name of Kalaignar, or Tamil or Semmozhi. The people of Tamil Nadu know about this trait well.' He recalled that the Supreme Court had already laid down guidelines for the Governor's actions based on a case filed by the Tamil Nadu government.

Speaker inaugurates National e-Vidhan Application Seva Centre
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Monday inaugurated the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) Seva Centre at the Delhi Legislative Assembly Complex and marked the successful completion of its first phase. The Monsoon Session of the Delhi Assembly is likely to be held in the first week of August, according to Assembly sources. A Bill to regulate private school fees, which is currently in the form of an ordinance, is to be discussed and passed during the session. 'The inauguration of the NeVA Seva Centre and the successful completion of the first phase of NeVA marks a critical milestone in our commitment to a digital, transparent, and sustainable legislature. This initiative reflects our alignment with the Prime Minister's vision of 'Digital India', paperless governance, and the transformative idea of 'One Nation, One Application',' he said. Mr. Gupta said that it is unfortunate that earlier governments made no sincere efforts in this direction and with NeVA, the Assembly is now bridging that gap and paving the way for a more accountable and modern legislative ecosystem. 'The first batch of MLAs actively participated and showed keen interest in the working of the application. Each Member was provided with a smartphone preloaded with the NeVA application, allowing seamless access to the list of business, legislative questions, documents, and session updates,' as per a statement from the Assembly Secretariat. The three-day training programme, scheduled from July 21 to 23, is designed to equip MLAs with practical knowledge of the NeVA platform's tools and functionalities. The training will ensure their effective participation in the upcoming Monsoon Session by enabling a smooth transition to paperless legislative functioning.
