Italy arrests 13 people in nationwide raids against Chinese mafia groups
Raids were conducted in 25 provinces, including Milan, Rome, Florence, Prato and Catania, anti-organised crime police official Andrea Olivadese said.
Police reported a further 31 people to judicial authorities without arresting them, and seized 550 grams (1.2 pounds) or around 5,500 doses of "shabu" crystal methamphetamines, and checked hundreds of shops and vehicles.
The gangs' crimes tend to exclusively target fellow Chinese, and, like traditional mafias, they "resort to intimidation and/or violence to achieve their goals" and seek to dominate the territory where they operate, police said.
The Chinese mob groups operate "with a deeply rooted concept of revenge that can take the form of a feud," they added.
In April, a senior figure in the Chinese underworld and a companion were shot dead in Rome, in what police suspected was part of a turf war within Chinese criminal networks in Italy.
Chinese gangs use the informal Hawala payment system to transfer money, and are "in constant dialogue" with other criminal organisations in Italy to share business and zones of influence, police said.
The gang members tend to hail from the same region in China and have a stronger foothold in parts of Italy with more Chinese residents, such as Tuscany, police noted.
Prato, a Tuscan city famous for its textile industry and its large Chinese community, has a long-running problem with labour exploitation, particularly among undocumented immigrants.
The arrests announced on Monday follow separate investigations exposing alleged worker abuse among Italian but Chinese-owned workshops in the supply chain of luxury brands such as Valentino, Giorgio Armani and Loro Piana.

Iran executes man accused of passing information on nuclear scientist to Israel
DUBAI, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Iran executed a man on Wednesday convicted of spying for Israel and passing on information about a nuclear scientist killed in Israel's June attacks on the Islamic Republic, the judiciary's news outlet Mizan reported. The report said the man, named Rouzbeh Vadi, had worked in one of Iran's "important and sensitive organisations," without going into further detail. Executions of Iranians convicted of spying for Israel has significantly increased this year, with at least eight death sentences carried out in recent months. The report said Vadi had "committed a wide range of crimes against the country's internal and external security which have caused severe disruption to public order". Israel launched 12 days of air strikes in June, targeting Iran's top generals and nuclear scientists. Iran retaliated with barrages of missiles and drones.

Jail for Inverness takeaway worker who made false asylum claim
A former takeaway worker who made a false asylum claim under an assumed identity has been jailed for 11 months. Malaysian Tick Beng Lew lied to immigration officers, telling them he was a Chinese asylum seeker called Ming Liu. When his deception was uncovered, he admitted to pretending to be Chinese because he was certain he would be returned to Malaysia if discovered by the immigration authorities. He believed a Chinese national would have a '50/50' chance of staying in the UK. At his sentencing at Inverness Sheriff Court, Sheriff David Harvie told Beng Lew that public trust in the asylum system was 'essential' and branded his behaviour 'disgraceful'. At the earlier hearing, fiscal depute Karen Poke told the court that Beng Lew had first come to the attention of authorities in 2019, when working at a takeaway in Inverness. He told the authorities he had arrived in the UK in 2006 and lived in a caravan at the back of the takeaway. 'He stated he was a Chinese national, his name was Ming Liu and he was born on 1 November 1975,' Ms Poke said. It later came to light that the man was, in fact, Tick Beng Lew, born in 1971. 'He was a Malaysian national and had no outstanding application for leave to remain in the UK,' the fiscal depute told the court. On September 6 of 2019 – after his first encounter with authorities – Beng submitted an application to remain in the country under the name Ming Liu. Home search found false papers In November 2023, as part of the investigation, Lew's Tarradale Place home was searched. At this point, he admitted that he had used a fake Chinese identity. 'He stated that as a Chinese national, it would be 50/50 whether he would be removed from the UK to China, however, if discovered by immigration, he was certain he would be returned to his home country of Malaysia,' the fiscal depute said. 'He further explained that he had had problems in Malaysia and did not want to return for that reason.' At the sentencing hearing, solicitor Samantha Morrison told the court: 'Mr Beng Lew is aware of the seriousness of this matter and his deliberate deception in relation to false identification.' She added: 'He has accepted responsibility, albeit at his trial. 'He is now going about the process of application for leave to remain in the UK by means of the correct procedure and is still awaiting the outcome of that application, which is currently on hold, awaiting the outcome of this matter.' Ms Morrison said Beng Lew was now unemployed and acting as a primary carer for his five-year-old stepson. She said: 'His partner has limited English and he assists in regard to the stepson's medical appointments and school and other appointments. 'A custodial sentence would have a detrimental impact to his family and his partner may have to give up work.' False asylum claim was 'disgraceful behaviour' But Sheriff Harvie told Beng Lew: 'There are refugees who face terrible circumstances and seek asylum in safe countries – you come from a safe country. 'You were not a refugee, you set out to abuse the system by securing false identification and pretending to be a Chinese national to attempt to secure asylum in the UK. 'It is essential that the public trust in the asylum system and deception, which is what you have pled guilty to, of that system, which is intended for those in greatest need as refugees, is disgraceful behaviour.' He jailed Beng Lew for 11 months.

Russia hit key Ukraine gas interconnector to undermine preparation for winter, Kyiv says
KYIV, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Russia has struck a gas pumping station in Ukraine's southern Odesa region used in a scheme to import LNG from the U.S. and Azerbaijan, undermining preparations for winter, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the gas infrastructure had been attacked in the village of Novosilske on the border with Romania, where the Orlovka interconnector, through which Ukraine receives gas via the Transbalkan route, is located. "This was a deliberate blow to our preparations for the heating season, absolutely cynical, like every Russian blow to the energy sector," Zelenskiy said on Telegram. Reuters could not independently confirm details of the attack. Russia's TASS news agency quoted the Russian defence ministry as confirming the attack on Ukraine's gas transport system. Ukraine has faced a serious gas shortage since a series of devastating Russian missile strikes this year, which significantly reduced domestic production. Ukraine's energy ministry said in a statement that the attacked station was used as part of a route connecting Greek LNG terminals with Ukrainian gas storage facilities via the Transbalkan gas pipeline. It noted that it had already been used to deliver LNG from the United States and test volumes of Azerbaijani gas. "This is a Russian strike purely against civilian infrastructure, deliberately targeting the energy sector and, at the same time, relations with Azerbaijan, the United States and partners in Europe, as well as the normal lives of Ukrainians and all Europeans," the ministry said. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington this week. Russia has repeatedly denied targeting civilians since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, but says infrastructure such as energy systems are legitimate targets because they help Ukraine's war effort. Earlier on Wednesday, the governor of the southern Odesa region reported an attack on the main gas pipeline. Ukrainian energy officials did not say whether gas would continue to be pumped via the interconnector. Kyiv says 0.4 million cubic metres of gas was scheduled to be pumped through Orlovka on Wednesday. Last month, Ukraine pumped a small test volume of Azerbaijani gas through the Transbalkan route for the first time and announced plans to significantly increase gas imports from Azerbaijan's SOCAR energy firm. Kyiv has called the route "extremely important", as it provides access to liquefied gas from Greek and Turkish LNG terminals, Azerbaijani and Romanian pipeline gas and, potentially, to Bulgarian offshore gas.
