'Marathon' mindset helped transform Notts

BBC News29-05-2025
Head coach Peter Moores says it has taken some "blind faith" and a "marathon" mindset to get Nottinghamshire to the top of the County Championship just months after they narrowly avoided relegation.Notts are 10 points clear at the summit at the midway point of the red-ball campaign.Their four wins from seven games is already double the victories they managed in the competition last term when they escaped the drop on the penultimate day of their final match the season. The former England head coach, who guided Nottinghamshire to promotion from Division Two as title winners in 2022, admits his side has exceeded expectations so far."We said to the group before we started that at the halfway stage the target was to be in the top three so we could have a go at it in the second-half," Moores told BBC Sport."To be top with a 10-point cushion really is a win more than we thought we would get."
Moores has won the County Championship title twice as coach, with Sussex in 2003 and Lancashire in 2011, and said that Notts' approach to turning their fortunes around in recent months will be how they now go on to challenge for the trophy this summer."It's a long-haul," he said. "It's like a marathon because it just keeps coming, which is a bit like football's Premier League where you just have to keep playing well. "And you have to have trust, you have to have blind faith in some ways that by doing the work every day, by pitching up when someone else might not, that will pay you back at the end of the season. And it does. "The most committed, the most skilful and the most at-it sides are the ones that win the championship."This year is a chance to try achieve something really special and win a championship."There are some really good teams in the division - Surrey being the one that everyone feels they have to beat - but we have proven to ourselves that we are a really good team and we can take on anyone if we play to the potential we have in the last few weeks."
Improving players and team
When finishing third from bottom in County Championship and failing to get beyond the the group stage of either the T20 Blast or One-Day Cup competitions last season, those traits were not immediately obvious at Trent Bridge last year.Yet, Notts' top scorers this season - captain Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater - are again leading the way with the bat.Brett Hutton, the County Championship's leading wicket-taker in 2023, has come back after an injury hit campaign to again lead the bowling attack with 24 scalps so far.Josh Tongue, the England international that missed his entire first year with Nottinghamshire through injury, has claimed 15 wickets in three games. Teenage off-spinner Farhan Ahmed, who made his first-class debut last season, has also contributed 10 wickets to date."We thought we had a good team and the way we work at our place is something we call the skill factor," Moores said."We try get people better. We believe that getting better as individuals, it collectively makes the team better."The impact of international recruits has also been pivotal. All-rounder Fergus O'Neill was an instant hit during his short stint, taking 21 wickets, while Pakistan seam bowler Mohammad Abbas has replaced the Australian with equal effect, having taken 16 wickets in three matches. The pair are among the seven Notts bowlers to have already claimed five-wicket hauls this season - alongside Hutton, Tongue, Dillon Pennington, Liam Patterson-White and Lyndon James."A lot of different people have chipped in and we seem to find a way," Moores said."We have been in some tough situations, there is no doubt about that. But someone has either managed to pull us out of it or if there has been an opportunity to drive home a win, someone has found that extra bit to do it."With the bat, there have been seven century makers, with captain Hameed producing two, including a double ton.He is leading the way as the competition's top scorer, but Moores says he has crucially "got the balance right" as skipper after taking the job on last year."He has had a great start to the season but the the biggest credit I would give him is that as well as the batting is how he has captained," Moores said."He has managed to get the group together in a really good way. There is a real comradery with them, and that comes out with the way they play their cricket."

'Alexander Isak's disrespectful behaviour is a major red flag for Arne Slot and Liverpool'

A Newcastle United icon and former Manchester United has spoken about Alexander Isak's transfer situation, with the Liverpool target seemingly not willing to play for the Magpies again Nicky Butt has said that Alexander Isak's"disrespectful" behaviour at Newcastle United should be a "red flag" for Liverpool. The Swedish striker has seemingly burned his bridges on Tyneside with reports suggesting he has claimed he will never play for the Magpies again. ‌ The 25-year-old, who only arrived at St James' Park in a £63million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, has long been coy about his future, which could now be at Liverpool given their interest in the striker. While the Reds saw an opening offer of £110m plus add-ons swiftly rebuffed by Newcastle, it is thought that last season's Premier League winners could soon return with a fresh bid - but only if Newcastle's stance changes. ‌ The Magpies are not willing to let Isak leave unless their £150m valuation of the player is met and they are able to recruit a replacement. The situation in the north east has turned ugly given Isak's recent defiance, with the player training separately from the first team after missing Eddie Howe's pre-season tour of Asia. ‌ And Butt, who played for the Toon Army between 2004 and 2010, believes that Isak's behaviour should come as a major red flag for Arne Slot and Liverpool. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football via BetMGM, the 50-year-old said: "I've never met Isak in my life, he always looked like a really decent guy on the football pitch, but I think the way he's behaved has been really disrespectful to the football club and knowing what the fans are like up there, you know, I wish him all the best." He added: "It would be a red flag for me if I was a manager, but you don't know what's been said to the boy. You might have said the only way you're getting out is by going and kicking up a fuss, and if this is your dream to play for this football club, then you've got to go and maybe be out of character for a while. "So you don't know what goes on, and I think there's a lot of games with agents in modern day football, and it's just sad. I mean, I'm sure if Isak went into the football club and said, 'I want to play for Liverpool or my boyhood club or whatever that might be, and I need to leave, I don't want to kick up a fuss, but I will do if you don't help me out here...' "I think once someone says that to you, you better off letting them go. Just let them go and do what they want to do and get some good money for them. And shake their hand and wish them all the best, even though if you don't believe that. It's just a better way of doing things, and I just think he's been badly advised." Butt also claimed that it is disappointing to see the saga unfold the way it has done after such a successful season for Newcastle, which saw them qualify for the Champions League and win their first trophy in 70 years in the Carabao Cup. Isak scored the winning goal in the final of the tournament against Liverpool to clinch silverware for the club. ‌ He explained: "Yeah, I think it's sad, isn't it, after an amazing season for Newcastle and the fans, and the manager, and the players and everyone associated with Newcastle. And to see the star player behave like he has been, I think it's pretty bad, really. Pretty sad. "I hope it does happen for the club's sake now. He [ Howe ] can move on. He can go and he can get the money and go and find players that want to play for that football club, and I think that's the most important thing. "It's really tough to come back from that, because if you're doing the right things around your peers and within the changing rooms, you can always try and win fans back, if you like. You can always try and work hard and apologise, but if you lose your mates in the changing room, I think you're done.' ‌ It's not the first time a player has kicked up a fuss in hope of securing a move. Earlier this summer, Viktor Gyokeres infamously ditched Sporting CP's pre-season preparations to push a move to Arsenal. And while the Gunners ultimately managed to agree on a £64m deal for the 27-year-old, his approach could have come back to haunt him. That's because Liverpool are yet to table a second bid for Isak as it stands, meaning Isak could be forced to remain in the north east. The Reds have already spent more than £250m this summer on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong. Given they are currently directing their attention on deals for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi and Parma's Giovanni Leoni, their funds potentially previously reserved for Isak may take a hit ahead of deadline day. Isak has also reportedly said that his stance with regards to playing for Newcastle will not change, even if he is unable to secure a move ahead of September 1. Such a reality could turn things even sourer on Tyneside, given he is under contract until 2028.

Ruben Amorim told when 'crisis' will start at Man Utd and when pressure mounts on him

Ruben Amorim has been backed at Manchester United this summer, but former Red Devils defender Mikael Silvestre believes pressure will begin to mount if he gets off to a rocky start Mikael Silvestre has told Ruben Amorim pressure will mount at Manchester United if he starts this season on a losing streak. ‌ The Portuguese head coach guided his side to a 15th-placed Premier League finish last season, having taken over from Erik ten Hag in November. He has been backed to the tune of £200million this summer as United look to move up the table. ‌ Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have all arrived at Old Trafford to bolster Amorim's squad, and Silvestre, who made over 350 appearances for the Red Devils, believes his job could be in danger should they enter crisis mode after a poor start. ‌ "I don't think [Ruben] Amorim is under any more pressure than any other manager in the Premier League, to be honest," Silvestre exclusively told Ladbrokes. "I think they're all under pressure, it's just that he's at Manchester United, and they've now spent a lot of money. It's the size of the club, coupled with the interest from the media which makes it feel like there's more pressure there. "There might be some pressure from the owners this season, but I would say that's the same with every other club. Amorim will go into this season under the same amount of pressure as every other manager; it's a fresh start. "But, if you start losing three games in a row, and find yourself in that kind of form, that's when the crisis will start. That's when there's real pressure. For now, everyone is on zero points, they should all be treated the same and everyone will be judged against their objectives for the season." On the back of some promising transfer activity, Silvestre thinks the aim for United this season should be European football, but perhaps not the Champions League. ‌ "As for my expectations of the club this season, they need to be qualifying for Europe," he continued. "The Champions League isn't necessarily the target, but European football of any kind definitely is. "Of course, everyone will always talk about the Champions League, but I just think that given the lack of consistency last season, I'm sceptical about their chances on that front." The defender also feels that jumping from a 15th-placed finish to the top four could be too tall an order, and has predicted a more modest top-flight finish for his former club. ‌ "As for where they finish in the table, I'd say maybe sixth or seventh? I don't see them in the top four or five," declared the Frenchman. "It's crazy saying that, to be honest. It just sounds so unfamiliar when we're talking about Manchester United, but that's the position the club is in right now, unfortunately. "You know, you've got to be realistic about what the team has been achieving in recent years. OK, there are new players in place now, and a completely new dynamic. But in terms of dominating other teams and getting consistency, there are still a lot of question marks, in my opinion."

Man Utd make decision over Chido Obi transfer after Benjamin Sesko signing

Manchester United are not planning to send Chido Obi out on loan following the signing of Benjamin Sesko, according to reports. The 17-year-old joined United last October off the back of an impressive scoring record for Arsenal with 32 goals in 18 games at youth level. Chido was handed his first-team debut by Ruben Amorim in February and the striker made eight appearances in all competitions last season. The striker was part of United's pre-season tour squad this summer and did feature in the friendlies against West Ham and Bournemouth last month. However, Chido was left on the bench for the 2-2 draw with Everton on August 3, as well as the 1-1 draw against Fiorentina at Old Trafford last Saturday. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. The arrivals of Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have also increased the level of competition in United's attack and could be viewed as blocking the pathway for Chido to receive more first-team opportunities. But according to the Daily Mail, United are currently planning to keep Chido with Amorim's squad and are not actively looking at potential loan moves for the 17-year-old. The report adds that United are not fully closing the door on a loan deal for Chido but the club expect him to remain at Old Trafford for the upcoming campaign. More Trending Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand urged United against a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is set to join Leeds United on a free transfer, and told his former club to develop Chido instead. 'Calvert-Lewin can't stay fit. No. Why would we bring him in to this club? This club is built on the academy and we've got Chido Obi sitting there,' Ferdinand said. 'Play him if you just need someone for a few games rather than someone who's older and can't stay fit. Sign Calvert-Lewin? On what grounds? 'No, I'm sorry, I disagree massively, I disagree massively. What message does that send to the rest of the Premier League or more importantly to your squad?' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
