'Alexander Isak's disrespectful behaviour is a major red flag for Arne Slot and Liverpool'
Nicky Butt has said that Alexander Isak's"disrespectful" behaviour at Newcastle United should be a "red flag" for Liverpool. The Swedish striker has seemingly burned his bridges on Tyneside with reports suggesting he has claimed he will never play for the Magpies again.
The 25-year-old, who only arrived at St James' Park in a £63million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, has long been coy about his future, which could now be at Liverpool given their interest in the striker. While the Reds saw an opening offer of £110m plus add-ons swiftly rebuffed by Newcastle, it is thought that last season's Premier League winners could soon return with a fresh bid - but only if Newcastle's stance changes.
The Magpies are not willing to let Isak leave unless their £150m valuation of the player is met and they are able to recruit a replacement. The situation in the north east has turned ugly given Isak's recent defiance, with the player training separately from the first team after missing Eddie Howe's pre-season tour of Asia.
And Butt, who played for the Toon Army between 2004 and 2010, believes that Isak's behaviour should come as a major red flag for Arne Slot and Liverpool. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football via BetMGM, the 50-year-old said: "I've never met Isak in my life, he always looked like a really decent guy on the football pitch, but I think the way he's behaved has been really disrespectful to the football club and knowing what the fans are like up there, you know, I wish him all the best."
He added: "It would be a red flag for me if I was a manager, but you don't know what's been said to the boy. You might have said the only way you're getting out is by going and kicking up a fuss, and if this is your dream to play for this football club, then you've got to go and maybe be out of character for a while.
"So you don't know what goes on, and I think there's a lot of games with agents in modern day football, and it's just sad. I mean, I'm sure if Isak went into the football club and said, 'I want to play for Liverpool or my boyhood club or whatever that might be, and I need to leave, I don't want to kick up a fuss, but I will do if you don't help me out here...'
"I think once someone says that to you, you better off letting them go. Just let them go and do what they want to do and get some good money for them. And shake their hand and wish them all the best, even though if you don't believe that. It's just a better way of doing things, and I just think he's been badly advised."
Butt also claimed that it is disappointing to see the saga unfold the way it has done after such a successful season for Newcastle, which saw them qualify for the Champions League and win their first trophy in 70 years in the Carabao Cup. Isak scored the winning goal in the final of the tournament against Liverpool to clinch silverware for the club.
He explained: "Yeah, I think it's sad, isn't it, after an amazing season for Newcastle and the fans, and the manager, and the players and everyone associated with Newcastle. And to see the star player behave like he has been, I think it's pretty bad, really. Pretty sad.
"I hope it does happen for the club's sake now. He [ Howe ] can move on. He can go and he can get the money and go and find players that want to play for that football club, and I think that's the most important thing.
"It's really tough to come back from that, because if you're doing the right things around your peers and within the changing rooms, you can always try and win fans back, if you like. You can always try and work hard and apologise, but if you lose your mates in the changing room, I think you're done.'
It's not the first time a player has kicked up a fuss in hope of securing a move. Earlier this summer, Viktor Gyokeres infamously ditched Sporting CP's pre-season preparations to push a move to Arsenal. And while the Gunners ultimately managed to agree on a £64m deal for the 27-year-old, his approach could have come back to haunt him.
That's because Liverpool are yet to table a second bid for Isak as it stands, meaning Isak could be forced to remain in the north east. The Reds have already spent more than £250m this summer on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong.
Given they are currently directing their attention on deals for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi and Parma's Giovanni Leoni, their funds potentially previously reserved for Isak may take a hit ahead of deadline day. Isak has also reportedly said that his stance with regards to playing for Newcastle will not change, even if he is unable to secure a move ahead of September 1. Such a reality could turn things even sourer on Tyneside, given he is under contract until 2028.

Luis Enrique makes honest admission about Tottenham after PSG win UEFA Super Cup
Luis Enrique admitted Tottenham 'deserved' to lift the UEFA Super Cup after his Paris Saint-Germain side fought back from two goals down to win on penalties. Spurs had appeared on course for a shock victory in Thomas Frank's first competitive match in charge as Micky van de Ven and newly appointed captain Cristian Romero netted either side of half time to stun the Champions League holders. But PSG enjoyed the lion's share of possession throughout the contest and the pressure eventually told, with Lee Kang-in arrowing an emphatic strike beyond Guglielmo Vicario in the 85th minute at Udinese's Stadio Friuli. The north Londoners were clinging on as the final whistle beckoned and Goncalo Ramos headed home Ousmane Dembele's pinpoint cross from the right flank to level in the fourth minute of stoppage time Vitinha missed PSG's opening effort as the match went straight to penalties, but an inspired Lucas Chevalier denied Van de Ven before Mathys Tel fired wide to put the Parisians on the cusp of a fifth trophy for 2025. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. It fell to Nuno Mendes to hold his nerve and the Portugal full-back did just that, making no mistake with the decisive spot-kick to send PSG's travelling support into raptures. The triumph capped off a historic few months for the French giants, who became European champions in May to add to their Ligue 1, French Cup and the Trophee des Champions crowns. Speaking shortly after the clash, a somewhat relieved Enrique asked TNT Sports' Jules Breach: 'Do you think we deserved that? For 80 minutes we didn't deserve that. 'I think Tottenham deserved winning the match because we can feel that they were in form, we can feel that they have been training for six weeks. 'They played a great match and we have been training only for six days, but sometimes football is unfair. 'And I have to say that we were very unlucky. In the last ten minutes, we could have scored two goals. 'I have to say that my players had faith until the last minute, like our supporters. 'Football is unpredictable and in that sense, I have to say that we were very lucky.' Enrique believes his players were likely feeling the effects of such a quick turnaround on the back of a gruelling campaign, with their Club World Cup final defeat to Chelsea falling just a month earlier. 'Absolutely, from the first minute when the players touched the ball, when the players played without having the time to think about where you have to pass,' the Spaniard explained. 'Yeah, a lot of unprecise passes and it's difficult to play the way we want to play if you don't train, if you haven't got the time to train. 'I have to say that it was like a miracle.' Enrique singled out new signing Lucas Chevalier for special praise, applauding the former Lille goalkeeper's 'personality' both on and off the pitch. 'He's a big personality which is so important to have if you want to stay at a club like PSG, a lot of pressure around us,' he added. 'But I'm very happy for him because he shows that personality and also for the players who come from the bench because they are so important. 'All of them want to play in the starting line-up, but they did great to draw that match and win a penalty shootout.' Liverpool agree fee for new centre-back
Liverpool have agreed a £26m fee with Parma for Italian defender Giovanni Leoni. The 18-year-old centre-back is set to become their sixth major summer signing and take their spending in this window past £300m. Leoni will begin a medical on Merseyside on Thursday and will discuss personal terms, which are not expected to be a problem after he made it clear his preference was to join Liverpool. The Italy Under-19 international had also attracted interest from Internazionale as well as other Premier League clubs and will go straight into Liverpool's squad, with any talk of a loan move ruled out. He will join Liverpool after they stepped up their attempts to find a replacement for Jarell Quansah, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen. The Premier League champions have also opened talks with Crystal Palace about England centre-back Marc Guehi. Their move for Leoni has no bearing on their interest in Guehi, with no sign so far they can agree a fee with Palace. Liverpool have had to use midfielders Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni and left-back Andy Robertson as centre-backs in pre-season after the sale of Quansah and when Joe Gomez was injured and Virgil van Dijk was ill. Head coach Arne Slot admitted after Sunday's Community Shield defeat to Palace that their defending was a concern, with nine goals conceded in their last four games. And their need for defensive reinforcements was also greater as Ibrahima Konate is in the last year of his contract. Now Leoni is set to join Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili, whose transfer from Valencia was arranged last year, among their summer signings.

Rangers working on three transfer exits as Jack Butland 'interest' sparks 49ers warning
Russell Martin is in the midst of revamping the Ibrox squad for both the Premiership and Champions League Rangers have been warned they must keep Jack Butland this summer amid an escalating clearout of the Ibrox dressing room. Russell Martin is still looking to put his own stamp on the Glasgow giants squad after a rocky start to the Scottish Premiership campaign. Despite two draws to start the season domestically, the boss has navigated a route to the Champions League playoff round after the new Ibrox owners 49ers Enterprises bringing in nine players for the boss so far this summer. Goalkeeper Butland has been the stand-out performer in the qualification rounds despite struggling to hold down a starting spot towards the end of last season. And with the club look to cut the size of the squad, Martin and the American owners have been warned against cashing in on the England cap by Richard Foster. He told the Go Radio Football Show: "He (Butland) is OK with the ball at his feet, I think Liam (Kelly) is probably better, obviously Liam is a bit smaller - but he starts the way he does and obviously he is going to get interest. "Goalkeeper is such a specialised position that everyone is on the lookout for them. It would be devastating for Rangers if they lost him. "For Rangers to replace him, I think it would take a decent amount of money. If you suddenly lose your goalkeeper, how much work have you done in looking at another goalkeeper?" Ridvan Yilmaz has dropped out of the Ibrox picture under Martin with Besiktas president Serdal Adali revealing that the club are in talks over bringing the 24-year-old back to the club. Yilmaz arrived at Ibrox in 2022 in a £5million deal but has failed to hold down a regular starting spot in the Scottish Premiership. Yeni Acik now report that Rangers have cut the valuation of the Turkish international from £5.1million to £2.5million in the last year after Besiktas enquired about a deal last summer. A new left-back could be on the agenda before the window closes with Palmeiras in negotiations to sign Jefte for as much as €6million (£5.1million). UOL claim that the the left-back has agreed a five-year deal with the Brazilian side with talks ongoing over a free to bring the 21-year-old back to his homeland. Jose Cifuentes is also reportedly in talks over another loan exit after a year on loan at Aris Saloniki. Brazilian outlet RTI Sport claim that talks over a five-month loan to Sport Club do Recife have "progressed' in the last 48 hours after an option to buy was placed in the agreement.
