Kolkata: Air India issued an apology on Monday following reports of cockroaches on a long-haul international flight, causing distress to passengers and prompting two to change their seats to avoid the pests.
The airline announced it will conduct a comprehensive investigation to identify the source and cause of the incident, and implement measures to prevent its recurrence. This is the latest in a series of embarrassments in recent months that the airline has had to face over hygiene, service, maintenance and safety issues.
Passengers on board flight AI 180, which took off from San Francisco around 8 am local time on Saturday, encountered 'bug-turbulence' mid-air.
Two passengers affected by the presence of "a few small cockroaches" were relocated to other seats, the airline said.
The carrier also said a deep cleaning of the aircraft was undertaken during a technical halt in Kolkata in the early hours of Monday for refuelling. However, Kolkata airport officials disputed this, stating the plane landed at 12.33 am on Monday and departed at 2.30 am, and that passengers had not alighted from the aircraft, something that is necessary for deep cleaning.

In its statement, Air India said, "Despite regular fumigation efforts, insects can sometimes enter an aircraft during ground operations". "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to the passengers," the airline added.
This incident marks another instance of roach issues on Air India flights. On Sept 28, 2024, a passenger reported cockroaches in food served on a Delhi-New York flight. Earlier, on April 20, 2024, one Uddhav Poddar took to social media to post photographs of roaches in the business class of flight AI 382 from Delhi to Singapore.
Issues with cockroaches are not unique to Air India, with passengers also complaining about cockroaches on IndiGo and Akasa Airlines flights. However, the frequency of complaints on AI flights, including delays, cancellations and service and maintenance concerns, has intensified pressure on the airline. Air India is already under scrutiny following the Dreamliner crash in June and findings of various safety violations in an audit by DGCA.
The San Francisco-Mumbai flight had previously experienced a left-engine snag on June 17, which forced the grounding of the aircraft. Passengers had been accommodated on other Mumbai-bound flights.

Which is India's safest airline? DGCA report reveals shocking truth, you'll be surprised to know who tops the list!

After the recent plane crash in Ahmedabad, the biggest fear in the minds of people who travel by air is about the safety. This tragic incident has made passengers even more worried, especially since serious technical problems have also been reported in other flights from different airlines. To make things worse, a report by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has raised even more concerns. Now, air travellers across India are asking the same question: Which airline is truly the safest to fly with in India? According to the DGCA report, not a single airline in India passed the audit without any issues. The DGCA looked into eight Indian airlines and found a total of 263 problems during inspections. These issues were divided into two types i.e. Level 1 (minor issues) and Level 2 (more serious ones). Among all the airlines, Alliance Air was found to have the most problems, with 57 issues reported during the DGCA checks. Level 1 issues found during inspection The good news is that Alliance Air did not have any Level 1 issues that could pose a serious threat to passenger safety. However, some Level 1 safety concerns were found in other airlines. These include: Air India – 7 issues Air India Express – 2 issues Tata Singapore Airlines – 10 issues Level 1 problems are considered more serious and can affect the safety of passengers if not fixed quickly. The DGCA has asked these airlines to fix all such problems immediately and submit a full report as soon as possible, according to a reports in Which airline is the safest in India? If we go by the DGCA's audit, the safest airline in India right now is SpiceJet. It had the least number of issues i.e. only 14, and importantly, none of them were serious enough to be called Level 1 problems. Next in line are Tata Singapore Airlines and IndiGo. Tata Singapore had 17 issues, and IndiGo had 23. Just like SpiceJet, IndiGo also had no Level 1 safety issues, which makes it one of the safer choices as well. So, based on the DGCA's report, passengers can get a fair idea of which airlines are currently maintaining better safety standards in India. How many issues were found in each airline? The issues are divided into: Level 1 – More serious, safety-related concerns Level 2 – Less serious, but still need attention Airline Name Level 1 Issues Level 2 Issues Total Issues Alliance Air 0 57 57 Air India 7 44 51 Star Air 0 41 41 Quikjet 0 35 35 Air India Express 2 23 25 IndiGo 0 23 23 Tata SIA Airlines 10 7 17 SpiceJet 0 14 14 SpiceJet had the fewest total issues (14), with no serious Level 1 problems, making it the safest based on the audit. IndiGo also had no Level 1 problems and ranks second in overall safety. Airlines like Alliance Air and Air India had the highest number of total and serious issues, raising more safety concerns.

Air India apologises, 'deep cleans' after roaches found on flight

. NEW DELHI: Air India has apologised for cockroaches on last Saturday's San Francisco-Mumbai (via Kolkata) flight due to which seats of some flyers had to be changed. The aircraft, a relatively new ex-Delta Boeing 777 (VT-AEH), was "deep cleaned" during its technical halt in Kolkata and the airline will initiate "a comprehensive investigation to determine the source / cause of this incident and implement measures to prevent recurrence. " The aircraft had taken off from San Francisco at 8.28pm (local time) on Aug 2. The cockroach trouble happened as it flew to Kolkata, where it arrived after about 16 hours. "...Two passengers were unfortunately bothered by the presence of a few small cockroaches on board. Our cabin crew, therefore, relocated the two to other seats...," an Air India spokesperson said. "During the flight's scheduled fuel stop in Kolkata, our ground crew promptly conducted a deep cleaning process to address the issue. The same aircraft subsequently departed in time for Mumbai. Despite our regular fumigation efforts, insects can sometimes enter an aircraft during ground operations... We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused," the spokesperson added.
