BBC accused of tarnishing Steve Wright's legacy, as colleague and friend savages corporation over late Radio 2 legend's treatment
Wright, 69, died from a ruptured stomach ulcer in February last year, according to his death certificate, leaving thousands of fans of the beloved radio personality heartbroken.
His colleague Anthony James, who worked on the music on Steve Wright in the Afternoon and Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs, has said he is unhappy with the BBC's handling of his friend's career - both before and after his death.
In 2022, Wright was axed from the BBC, despite the success of his show being 'through the roof'.
The star admitted to James that he had been told of its cancellation and sworn to secrecy by the corporation nine months beforehand.
However, he believed he had been reassured by Helen Thomas, the head of BBC Radio 2, that the show would continue via a new digital channel.
When the months went by with no word on this, Wright was said to have approached director-general Tim Davie, who allegedly told Wright: 'I can't believe she fired you… I wouldn't have fired you myself.' The BBC has denied this.
James claimed the axing of Steve Wright in the Afternoon was part of a move by the BBC to ban broadcasters considered too 'pale, male and stale'.
He told The Telegraph: 'They thought that this idea of personality is old style; it's not cool anymore, we should make Radio 2 cool.
'But who gives a s*** about cool? It's about being entertained.'
James claimed the effect of the sacking on Wright's physical and mental health was devastating. 'He didn't really stop to accept it. I think it ate him up,' he said. 'It got worse, and his health got worse.'
Later this month, BBC Radio 2 will broadcast a tribute concert for Wright in his memory.
Thomas previously wrote to James last year, seeking permission to play his music in a BBC tribute concert for Wright.
He initially agreed, but later told Thomas he did not plan to attend.
In the week before the concert, she allegedly suggested the event would be a good opportunity to network. 'This is not about networking. This is about a tribute to my friend,' James said.
James believes the last-minute push to honour Wright was driven by concern that his absence would 'look bad' for the BBC.
The BBC said in a statement: 'Steve was deeply loved by the Radio 2 family and listeners, and we all miss him dearly. For almost three decades he hosted a raft of brilliant shows on the network.
'Steve's Sunday Love Songs had been on air since 1996 and he was excited to take on the legendary Pick of the Pops alongside a variety of specials on Radio 2 including Steve Wright: The Best of the Guests, Steve Wright's Summer Nights and Steve Wright's Love Songs Extra on BBC Sounds.'

Rob found himself being "frogmarched" out of icon Mick Jagger 's 82nd birthday party after managing to get himself into the exclusive showbiz event. 4 4 The TV star revealed he was invited along as Jimmy Carr 's plus one following a night of heavy boozing at one of Oasis ' reunion gigs at Wembley Stadium. The event took place at the swanky Chelsea nightclub The Rex Rooms and saw Rob partying alongside stars including Ronnie Wood. Before things took a turn, Rob found himself loving the night as he opened up on the once-in-a-lifetime moment on the Parenting Hall podcast. He confessed: "It was a tiny little back room and Mick Jagger was there. "Obviously, a lot of his ex-wives and children from his ex-wives. There was Mariella Frostrup. BBC orders two more series of Waterloo Road
The BBC has recommissioned popular school-based drama, Waterloo Road (8x60') for two more series. Made by Rope Ladder Fiction and Wall to Wall North, filming of the next two series will begin in Greater Manchester later this year. Waterloo Road is known for its sensitive portrayal of everyday issues affecting young people, families, schools and their staff, punctuated by humour and heart. Since its return, the series has explored storylines such as the cost-of-living crisis, coercive control, neurodivergence, work-place politics, family drama, grief, and young love. The BBC rebooted the series in 2023, after the resurgence of the original 10-series-run on iPlayer during lockdown. Waterloo Road remains as one of iPlayer's top performing titles with under 35's. The two new series will allow the production to continue with its investment in nurturing and developing creative talent in the North of England especially through its curated development programmes - the recently announced production development scheme which has already given over 40 trainees paid entry-level work in the TV industry since 2022, and the Discovery (WBD) Access x Waterloo Road Directors Programme which was formed to support and grow the pool of women directors in the North of England. The series has cemented its reputation as an entryway for new British talent on the screen, platforming the careers of successful actors such as Jenna Coleman, Lucien Laviscount, Regé-Jean Page, Katie McGlynn, Chelsee Healey, Phoebe Dynevor, whose sister, Hattie Dynevor joined the series in 2024, and Adam Thomas, who returned when the series was rebooted in 2023 and remains in the series to date. As well as Thomas, since its return the Waterloo Road has also welcomed back original cast members Angela Griffin, Katie Griffiths, Chelsee Healey, Lauren Drummond and Jason Merrells who will also feature as a full time cast member in the series, which is set to premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One next month. The eight-part series was filmed back-to-back with the next series which will air next year. As previously announced, Jon Richardson is set to make his debut as the school's new media studies teacher next month. Jon follows the footsteps of fellow leading comedy talent, Jason Manford who starred in Waterloo Road as head teacher, Steve Savage. Cameron Roach, Founder of Rope Ladder Fiction and Exec Producer for Waterloo Road says: 'When the BBC commissioned the reboot of Waterloo Road we had hoped it might run for a few seasons, but to be commissioned for further series, bringing the total episodes since relaunch to seventy hours, is a huge achievement and a reflection of the incredible creative teams in front of and behind the camera. As well as continuing to celebrate emerging talent, the show is fast gaining a reputation for working with the best comedy talent, as Jon Richardson joins the cast this season.
