Inspired by trip to Finland

A Cromwell principal has looked to the top-performing Finnish education system for inspiration as New Zealand schools brace for major reforms.
Goldfields School principal Anna Harrison joined a group of 20 educators from New Zealand and Australia on a professional tour of Finland last October, taking part in lectures, classroom visits and preschool observations.
The trip was sparked after Finnish education expert Pasi Sahlberg spoke at the New Zealand Principals Federation Conference.
"They've obviously done very well in [the] Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) and Pisa studies and other international measures of quality of education," Mrs Harrison said.
"So we thought that would be an interesting place to go and look at, seeing as there was a lot of reform and change just about to happen in the New Zealand education system."
Mrs Harrison found touring schools in Finland to be an eye-opening experience.
"Playgrounds were quite different to our playgrounds, classrooms were more formal probably than our classroom settings," she said.
By formal, she meant teachers typically stood at the front of the room and used a camera to model activities, while students followed along and received support as needed.
One key takeaway was the emphasis on play — something she wanted to apply at her own school.
"I think the things that I've reflected on the most have been about ensuring those times for play and making sure that children get those break times, and trying to make sure that we put in the supports early when we recognise that children need some support," she said.
She also noted smaller class sizes and dedicated teacher aides in every classroom as standout features of the Finnish model.
"A move to reduce class sizes would be a really significant thing that would make a big difference to teachers and children," she said.
Better funding and improved facilities were other areas she hoped New Zealand could prioritise. In Finland, she saw primary schools with fully equipped music and technology rooms, and commercial kitchens serving meals to students.
Outside the classroom, the trip included some cultural highlights.
"We all really enjoyed the sauna — it was a really fun, outside-of-your-comfort-zone type activity," she said.
The group also visited Helsinki and attended a local derby ice hockey game, choosing to support the home team, Tampere Tappara (battle axe), "and they won, so that was really exciting".
Looking ahead, Mrs Harrison hoped to visit other countries to explore more educational approaches.
"The group that I went with — we've been talking about Japan as another place that might be really interesting," she said.

Taieri College claim first win of season

Taieri College upset King's 2nds to record their first win for the season in the Southern Schools Rugby Championship. It is a coup for the co-educational school, who have found themselves on the wrong side of some lopsided scores throughout the years. But not on Saturday. They battled into a strong breeze at King's to trail 14-12 at the break. They owned the second half, running in three tries and adding 17 unanswered points to record a 29-14 win. New coach Zane McTainsh was thrilled with the result. He started the year as an assistant but found himself elevated to the top role when veteran coach Murray Roulston pulled the pin after a couple of weeks. Beating a 2nd XV at one of the big schools is a huge deal for Taieri. "It gives us a bit of belief that we can compete, at least, against a few of these big teams," McTainsh said. Powerhouse loosehead Charlie Such was phenomenal. "His post-contact metres were enormous for us." No 8, Kupa Richmond, did some heavy lifting and tighthead Connor Jopson rolled up his sleeves as well. Halfback Liam Lord was tidy. And centre Sam Robertson looked energetic and scored a cracking try in the second half. In the other matches in the maroon pool, Mount Aspiring edged Cromwell 29-24 in Cromwell and Wakatipu beat Otago Boys 2nds 20-17 at Littlebourne. Southland Boys' remain unbeaten in division 1. They rolled King's 38-12 in Invercargill and the school's 2nd XV edged Dunstan 8-7. Otago Boys' rollercoaster season took another dip. They were defeated 29-26 by John McGlashan at John McGlashan College. In the blue pool, Māruawai/Menzies held on to beat John McGlashan 2nds 12-10 in Wyndham, St Kevin's travelled across town and beat rival Waitaki Boys' 15-12 and Central Southland recorded a 15-7 win in Winton.

High hopes for early childhood centre

It is hoped a newly opened early childhood centre in Cromwell's fast-growing Wooing Tree Estate will offer much-needed relief to local families, easing pressure on waiting lists at other centres bursting at the seams. BestStart Wooing Tree opened at the end of April on the edge of the new neighbourhood, beside State Highway 8B and close to the entrance of the pedestrian tunnel under the highway, linking it to the town centre. "Interest from local families has been very strong, which reflects the growing need for early childhood education in the Cromwell area," centre manager Emma Stone told The News. "We've had a steady stream of inquiries and are now taking enrolments." For months — if not years — some parents were enrolling their children as soon as they learned they were pregnant, desperate to secure a spot in a town where demand for childcare for under-5s vastly outstripped supply. Cromwell-based mothers support group Mums4Mums co-ordinator Kylie Murdoch said the shortage had placed enormous stress on working households, particularly those dependent on two incomes to manage the region's higher-than-average housing costs. Ms Murdoch said it was still too early to know the impact of the opening of the new centre, but feedback from young families suggested demand was "levelling out". Parents had told other media in the area that the lack of childcare availability had made it difficult — if not impossible — for some to return to work after parental leave, with women disproportionately affected. Some had jobs lined up or contracts signed, only to be forced to delay or abandon their return to the workforce because they could not secure the hours they needed in care. Ms Murdoch said, with the changing job market, she just hoped enough work opportunities would be available for parents that needed them as childcare became more available. Ms Murdoch said there was one upside to the childcare squeeze, "it's created a sense of community with the mums". "They've worked together and found other ways [to support each other]." Meanwhile, Ms Stone advised families interested in enrolling children at the Wooing Tree preschool to "get in touch as soon as possible". BestStart Wooing Tree can cater for up to 80 children, aged three months to 6 years. Soon-to-be-4-year-old Tyson Browne told The News his favourite thing about the centre was its slide.
