Dayton welcomes NATO delegates with locally made gift bags: Here's what is in them

Yahoo29-04-2025

Apr. 28—As more than 1,000 distinguished guests make their way to Dayton this May for the NATO Spring Parliamentary Assembly, delegates from 45 countries will receive a special gift bag showcasing Dayton's craftsmanship and community pride.
"These carefully curated VIP gift bags tell a story about who we are in Dayton, Ohio and our spirit, our craftsmanship and our unwavering hospitality," said Jacquelyn Powell, president and CEO of Destination Dayton. "These bags represent an incredible community wide effort. A showcase of the heart and hustle that defines Dayton."
The Dayton Sewing Collaborative, a nonprofit organization with a mission to lift Dayton up, teamed up with the LION Group, a 125 year old company that delivers innovative, patented technology to the fire service market, to create a durable messenger bag that the delegates could use in their daily lives.
"We started with a simple Google search and kind of went from there," said Rebecca Springer, vice president and treasurer of the Dayton Sewing Collaborative, who designed the bag. "Our big concern was making sure that we could use something that was locally sourced, economical and also something that was durable that people could take all over the world."
The LION Group digitalized the bag pattern from the Dayton Sewing Collaborative and cut out the fabric using their automated cutters. The Dayton Sewing Collaborative put together the bags.
"We're very honored to have been asked, and the support we've received from the community has just been overwhelming," said Brenda Rex, director of the Dayton Sewing Collaborative. "If it hadn't been for the support we got from the LION Group, we would never have been able to do this project."
A team of about 20 to 30 employees from both organizations, volunteers and former sewing students worked together to sew 650 bags. Each bag took about 3.5 hours to be made, Rex said.
There are two versions — a brown and a green bag — with inside lining inspired by the Wright Brothers. Each bag has a patch, from Think Patented in Miamisburg, sewn on the inside featuring the NATO PA logo, along with a tag that says made in Dayton, Ohio.
The outer shell of the bags are made from "rescue fabric" — fabric that was originally designed to be used for firefighter turnout gear.
"This stuff was on its way to the landfill when we rescued it and were able to make something very functional and something very Dayton with it," Rex said.
The outside zipper pull features a 3D printed Wright B Flyer made by Kingman 3D Creations.
"Dayton is a city built on innovation and resilience. From the Wright Brothers to cutting edge aerospace and defense work happening today," Powell said. "These gift bags are more than tokens. They're expressions of Dayton's legacy."
Inside the bags, delegates will receive a commemorative coin.
Andrew McKenna, CEO of Hero Coins, designed the two-sided coins featuring the NATO PA logo on one side and the city of Dayton skyline on the other.
"Hero Coins, LLC is built on the same simple, powerful idea that everyday acts of courage and kindness deserve to be recognized," McKenna said. "These tokens tell a story. They say you matter. What you did mattered. Our deep commitment to community truly matters."
Destination Dayton will also provide snack bags to the NATO PA delegates filled with iconic Dayton flavors such as Cheez-It, Dayton Nuts and Esther Price Candies.
"These bags are just the beginning of what we hope will be an unforgettable experience for our guests," Powell said. "We look forward to welcoming the NATO PA to Dayton — where you'll always discover the unexpected."

SEC Concerned About Crypto ETFs With Staking Exposure

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is concerned that crypto exchange-traded funds that offer exposure to staking may not qualify as ETFs after all. On Friday, the agency sent a letter to ETF Opportunities Trust regarding Ethereum and Solana funds by REX Financial and Osprey Funds with staking exposure: the REX-Osprey ETH ETF and the REX-Osprey SOL ETF. Staking allows crypto investors to earn rewards on the tokens they hold. The SEC letter said that it 'continues to have unresolved questions whether the Funds, if structured and operated as proposed, would be able to meet the definition of 'investment company' under the Investment Company Act.' Under the law, funds must meet this definition to be eligible to trade on the stock market. The financial regulator added that it is 'concerned that the Funds may have improperly filed their registration statement on Form N-1A and that disclosures in the registration statement regarding the Funds' status as investment companies may be potentially misleading.' REX Financial and Osprey Funds declined to comment to However, Bloomberg reported that Greg Collett, general counsel at REX Financial, said, 'We think we can satisfy the SEC on the investment company question, and we don't intend to launch the funds until we do that.' The funds would have been the 'first-ever staked Ether and Solana ETFs' as well as the "first-ever spot Solana" ETF, according to Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg. The SEC's delay comes after it issued guidance on Thursday, stating that staking participants don't need to register their transactions with the agency. On Saturday, Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw issued a statement criticizing the SEC's 'confusion' on crypto asset security status. 'In the name of this clarity, we've seen staff statement after staff statement, pronouncing that all sorts of crypto assets are not securities. And yet, now we see no objection to the effectiveness of new exchange-traded funds that assert certain crypto assets—ETH and SOL—actually are securities. Does this Commission, in fact, believe that ETH and SOL are securities?' Crenshaw wrote. 'How is it that these crypto assets are supposedly not securities when it comes to registration requirements but conveniently are securities when a registrant sees an opportunity to sell a new product?'Permalink | © Copyright 2025 All rights reserved Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

EU's Textile Recycling Excellence Project Creates New Blueprint

The European Union-funded Textile Recycling Excellence (T-Rex) Project wrapped with the completion of a blueprint for scaling textile-to-textile recycling processes for post-consumer polyester, polyamide 6 and cellulosic materials. The blueprint, which spotlights insights and recommendations for each phase of the value chain, has been informed by in-depth analysis conducted by the T-Rex consortium throughout the project. That analysis included assessing the technical feasibility, economic viability and environmental impact of the recycling value chain. More from Sourcing Journal EXCLUSIVE: Feben's Mini Twist Finds Pulp Friction With OnceMore Is Europe Ready for a Textile-to-Textile Recycling 'Tipping Point'? Trump Threatens EU With 50% Duties, Says Trade Talks 'Going Nowhere' The plan was formulated to address four key challenges: technical scalability, business viability, environmental impact and policy recommendations. Within technical scalability, two major obstacles stand in the way of textile-to-textile recycling—inefficient sorting processes and the need for pre-processing of garments. Current manual sorting methods have proven to inefficient and costly to scale, but advancements in automated sorting technology such as near infrared (NIR) and AI-powered systems could improve yield, throughput and identification of multi-layer or blended garments. Though the market potential of textile-to-textile recycling in the EU looks promising—with volumes of post-consumer textile waste suitable for recycling projected to reach 1.2 million metric tons by 2030—business viability remains challenging. That's primarily due to limited access to quality feedstock and a lack of infrastructure at scale. Scaling textile-to-textile recycling in Europe will require coordinated financial, regulatory and industrial efforts to overcome these issues. Ensuring textile-to-textile recycling reduces the environmental impact of fiber production hinges on both the type of material being recycled and the specific recycling technology used. Energy efficiency during the recycling process, as well as the entirety of the manufacturing and supply chain is critical for decreasing environmental impact. While the EU has some of the most progressive regulatory protocols for textile sustainability through its Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), the T-Rex Project calls for additional governmental support and oversight. Proposed initiatives include economic incentives, end-of-waste criteria, recyclability standards and setting realistic, achievable targets for recycled content. According to the European Environmental Agency, more than 6.95 million metric tons of textile waste are generated annually in the EU, and that's projected to increase to 7.3 million metric tons by 2030. Much of that waste is incinerated or ends up in a landfill, with only 2 percent of post-consumer textiles in Europe diverted to fiber-to-fiber recycling. The T-Rex Project launched in 2022 to help combat that problem, assembling 13 stakeholders from across the textile value chain, including Adidas, Aalto University and Infinited Fiber Company, to develop a plan for closed-loop recycling of post-consumer household textile waste in the EU. While the project's recommendations create a framework for implementing scalable textile-to-textile recycling, the group maintains that this should be just one aspect of a larger-scale effort to reduce textile waste. That strategy should also prioritize reuse, repair and demand management of garments and other textiles. The full T-Rex blueprint will be available on the project's website,
