What is NATO? Why is it in Dayton? Everything to know about the parliamentary assembly
This week, Dayton will host the NATO Spring Parliamentary Assembly, which aligns with the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords. Over 1,000 diplomats, staff, journalists, and guests from dozens of countries are expected to attend the NATO Parliamentary Assembly meetings from May 22 to 26. According to the Ohio Statehouse News Bureau, this is the first time NATO has come to the US since 2003, "coming at a precarious time for US-international relations." But what is NATO, and why is it in Dayton? Here's everything to know. The assembly was created in 1955 to link the North Atlantic Treaty Organization with the parliaments of NATO's 32 member nations. NATO's Parliamentary Assembly is held twice annually, per the Dayton Daily News. Sessions occur in the spring and the fall, bringing NATO members and partner legislators together for a series of debates and reports. The news site adds that this week, the alliance will discuss key issues and policy recommendations on its defense and security agenda, including discussions related to the war in Ukraine. This will be the first time the U.S. has hosted the assembly since Orlando did in 2003. NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Republican Congressman Mike Turner has been working for more than three years to bring the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to Dayton to align with the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords. Turner, 65, was mayor of Dayton in 1995 when the Dayton Peace Accords were reached at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, bringing an end to the Bosnian War. He's been in Congress for 23 years, including 16 years as an appointee to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. According to the event's website, the NATO sessions and plenary will be held at various venues in the NATO village in downtown Dayton, including the Schuster Center, Victoria Theatre, and CareSource headquarters. Traffic will be restricted, and pedestrian access will be limited. The city of Dayton and its partners are preparing for potential protests. On the first night of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly meeting in Montreal in November 2024, protests turned violent with people throwing objects at police, lighting vehicles on fire, and breaking windows, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. The state has allocated $3 million for security expenses, including anti-scaling fencing and concrete barriers, drones, and radios. The event's website states that only credentialed individuals are allowed to access the NATO Village and assembly sessions. Roughly 300 parliament members from the 32 NATO countries will be in Dayton for the spring session. Their families and staff, U.S. officials, and guest speakers have also been invited to join. The total number of attendees is predicted to be around 1,000. State Representative Desiree Tims (D-Dayton) announced in March that $4.3 million has been allocated for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, including $2.8 million in reimbursement costs to the city of Dayton for policing, fire, public works, and equipment expenses. NATO summit has blood center seeking more donors, just in case
Video: DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Law enforcement is working to ensure the upcoming NATO Spring Parliamentary Assembly goes off safely, but worst-case scenarios have to be planned for. Versiti Blood Center of Ohio-Dayton has put out a call for more blood donors before May 23 to build up its supply in case of emergency while downtown Dayton is shut down. In its call for donors, Versiti pointed out that a traumatic incident to just one person can cause a hospital to have to use up to 100 units of blood for treatment. Hundreds of people are expected to come to Dayton for the summit. The Community Blood Center, 349 S. Main St., is outside the 'NATO Village' safety zone, but having much of downtown blocked off to traffic will still make travel to donate increasingly difficult as the event approaches. If you can't make it downtown, there are several other opportunities for donors to give blood this month in Dayton. The Versiti Blood Center of Ohio-Dayton branch, announced 7 upcoming opportunities. Our Lady of Good Hope Church – May 13, from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Our Lady of Good Hope Church/ Parish and Country Shopping Center – May 15, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Town and Country Shopping Center donor Albert the Great Church – May 17, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., at St. Albert the Great Parish Activity Church – May 19, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Parkview Carrollton YMCA – May 19, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., at West Carrollton Valley Hospital North – May 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Miami Valley Hospital Mall – May 28, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Dayton Mall donor coach. Dayton welcomes NATO delegates with locally made gift bags: Here's what is in them
Apr. 28—As more than 1,000 distinguished guests make their way to Dayton this May for the NATO Spring Parliamentary Assembly, delegates from 45 countries will receive a special gift bag showcasing Dayton's craftsmanship and community pride. "These carefully curated VIP gift bags tell a story about who we are in Dayton, Ohio and our spirit, our craftsmanship and our unwavering hospitality," said Jacquelyn Powell, president and CEO of Destination Dayton. "These bags represent an incredible community wide effort. A showcase of the heart and hustle that defines Dayton." The Dayton Sewing Collaborative, a nonprofit organization with a mission to lift Dayton up, teamed up with the LION Group, a 125 year old company that delivers innovative, patented technology to the fire service market, to create a durable messenger bag that the delegates could use in their daily lives. "We started with a simple Google search and kind of went from there," said Rebecca Springer, vice president and treasurer of the Dayton Sewing Collaborative, who designed the bag. "Our big concern was making sure that we could use something that was locally sourced, economical and also something that was durable that people could take all over the world." The LION Group digitalized the bag pattern from the Dayton Sewing Collaborative and cut out the fabric using their automated cutters. The Dayton Sewing Collaborative put together the bags. "We're very honored to have been asked, and the support we've received from the community has just been overwhelming," said Brenda Rex, director of the Dayton Sewing Collaborative. "If it hadn't been for the support we got from the LION Group, we would never have been able to do this project." A team of about 20 to 30 employees from both organizations, volunteers and former sewing students worked together to sew 650 bags. Each bag took about 3.5 hours to be made, Rex said. There are two versions — a brown and a green bag — with inside lining inspired by the Wright Brothers. Each bag has a patch, from Think Patented in Miamisburg, sewn on the inside featuring the NATO PA logo, along with a tag that says made in Dayton, Ohio. The outer shell of the bags are made from "rescue fabric" — fabric that was originally designed to be used for firefighter turnout gear. "This stuff was on its way to the landfill when we rescued it and were able to make something very functional and something very Dayton with it," Rex said. The outside zipper pull features a 3D printed Wright B Flyer made by Kingman 3D Creations. "Dayton is a city built on innovation and resilience. From the Wright Brothers to cutting edge aerospace and defense work happening today," Powell said. "These gift bags are more than tokens. They're expressions of Dayton's legacy." Inside the bags, delegates will receive a commemorative coin. Andrew McKenna, CEO of Hero Coins, designed the two-sided coins featuring the NATO PA logo on one side and the city of Dayton skyline on the other. "Hero Coins, LLC is built on the same simple, powerful idea that everyday acts of courage and kindness deserve to be recognized," McKenna said. "These tokens tell a story. They say you matter. What you did mattered. Our deep commitment to community truly matters." Destination Dayton will also provide snack bags to the NATO PA delegates filled with iconic Dayton flavors such as Cheez-It, Dayton Nuts and Esther Price Candies. "These bags are just the beginning of what we hope will be an unforgettable experience for our guests," Powell said. "We look forward to welcoming the NATO PA to Dayton — where you'll always discover the unexpected."
