Zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections: Poll body announces scheduled for electoral roll update
Sangrur deputy commissioner Sandeep Rishi said the electoral rolls, previously published on March 3, would be updated with a qualifying date of Sept 1 to ensure all eligible voters were included in the list.
As per Section 28 of the
Punjab State Election Commission
Act, 1994, eligible voters must be at least 18 years of age on the qualifying date and ordinarily resident in a constituency, said the DC.
He further said the draft publication of existing electoral rolls had been issued and people could file claims and objections from Aug 20-27; the same would be disposed of by Sept 1.
The final publication of electoral rolls will be done on Sept 3, Rishi added.
The DC directed all the electoral registration officers-cum-sub divisional magistrates to strictly adhere to the schedule so that all eligible voters in zila parishad and panchayat samiti constituencies could participate in the process.

Job scam: Court asks mantri to surrender on Sept 12
Kolkata: A special PMLA court on Wednesday directed state minister Chandranath Sinha to surrender in court on Sept 12, in connection with the teacher recruitment scam. Charges against the minister are likely to be framed on the same date. It also asked ED to issue a summons to Sinha within the next 15 days. The ED supplementary charge sheet filed against Sinha mentioned two bank accounts in Bolpur belonging to him, and transactions worth around Rs 15 crore. Investigators have reasons to believe that the amount might be linked to the recruitment scam, especially after Sinha's name was found in the diary of another accused, Kuntal Ghosh. ED sources said that an amount was written beside his name. The ED earlier conducted multiple raids at his residence, during which approximately Rs 41 lakh was seized. Vaiko suspends Mallai Sathya for 'anti-party activities'
Chennai: MDMK general secretary Vaiko relieved party deputy general secretary Mallai Sathya from all responsibilities, accusing him of indulging in "anti-party activities". In a show cause notice issued under party bylaws to Sathya on Aug 17, Vaiko directed the senior functionary not to use the party flag and name and sought a reply within a fortnight. In the notice issued under Rule 35(6) of MDMK bylaws, Vaiko said Sathya's media interviews and speeches on internal party affairs amounted to violating party rules and tarnished its reputation. "Your activities undermine the interests of the party and are contrary to its policies and objectives," Vaiko said, directing Sathya to hand over records, assets, and responsibilities to the party general secretary immediately. Sathya must submit a written explanation within a fortnight, failing which, disciplinary action would be taken without further notice. Sathya distributed sweets to his supporters upon receiving the letter on Wednesday morning. He told reporters that he was ready to meet Vaiko and reply in person. "You are my mentor. You moulded me. Fix a date and place, I will come alone and answer," he said. Sathya also invited Vaiko to attend the 117th birth anniversary event of C N Annadurai in Kancheepuram, where a 'Dravida Ratna' award was planned for him. Sathya had contested unsuccessfully in Madurantakam assembly constituency in 2021, where he lost to AIADMK's Maragatham Kumaravel by 3,570 votes.
