World number one Aryna Sabalenka has decided to skip the US Open tune-up event in Montreal due to fatigue, Tennis Canada announced on Wednesday.
The 27-year old Belarusian's decision to sit out the July 26-August 7 Canadian Open follows her semi-final appearances at Wimbledon and Berlin and after losing in the French Open final.
"I'm looking forward to kicking off the North American hard-court swing, but to give myself the best chance for success this season, I've decided it's in my best interest to skip Montreal," Sabalenka said in a Tennis Canada press release.
"I'll miss my amazing Canadian fans, but I'm already looking forward to seeing you all next year. Thanks for your understanding and support it means the world to me!"
Tennis Canada also said Spanish world number 10 Paula Badosa, who announced this week that she has a fresh back injury, has also withdrawn from the Canadian Open.

What's next for Alex Eala after Wimbledon?

Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 1, 2025 Philippines' Alexandra Eala reacts during her first round match against Czech Republic's Barbora Krejcikova Photo: REUTERS/Toby Melville Alex Eala recently made history as she had her first WTA Tour finals stint in the Eastbourne Open and made her Wimbledon debut afterwards. In Eastbourne, Eala fell short against Maya Joint for the crown, while she had first round exits in both singles and doubles tournaments of Wimbledon. But after achieving major feats in the past few months, including a dream run in the Miami Open last March and reaching her career-high ranking at no. 56 after the Eastbourne Open, the grind does not stop yet for Eala. According to Eala, she will head to North America for tournaments in Montreal in Canada, Cincinnati in the United States, and Monterrey in Mexico. After that, she will head to New York for the US Open. "After that, like I said, we shift to Asia. So, there will be a few around China. I know there's one in Hong Kong in October. And, yeah, around, you know, closer to home. So, if anyone wants to come," Eala said in a meet and greet event organized by Globe. While she has been competing left and right in major tournaments, Eala said she still dreams of winning her first Grand Slam win. "There's still a lot for me to achieve, I think. There are a lot of big tournaments lined up, not just the US Open, so I hope to play well there and of course try to get my first Grand Slam win." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

(Photo: Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images/REUTERS) Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark has opted out of participating in the WNBA's All-Star festivities while she recovers from a right groin injury. Clark had been named a starter and team captain for Saturday's All-Star Game in Indianapolis after receiving the most fan votes. She also planned to participate in the 3-point contest before issuing her statement on Thursday. "I am incredibly sad and disappointed to say I can't participate in the 3-Point Contest or the All-Star Game. I have to rest my body," Clark said in a statement. "I will still be at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for all the action and I'm looking forward to helping Sandy (Brondello) coach our team to a win." Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally, who was chosen as a starter for Team Clark, pulled out Wednesday due to a ankle injury. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert selected Washington Mystics guard Brittney Sykes and Atlanta Dream forward Brionna Jones as replacements for Clark and Sabally. Sykes, 31, is averaging 17.1 points per game this season. This will be her first All-Star Game. Jones, 29, is now a four-time All-Star. She is averaging 13.4 points and 7.8 rebounds. Clark, 23, sustained the injury in the final minute of Indiana's 85-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday in Boston. She has missed 10 regular season games this season, 11 if the Commissioner's Cup final is included. Previously, she had never missed a game in her college of pro career. In 13 games, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game in her second professional season. Sabally, 27, is averaging a career-best 19.1 points per game. She last played on July 3. "Unfortunately, my body still needs more time to recover and I am unable to suit up and play in this weekend's game," Sabally said. "I'm disappointed." --Field Level Media/Reuters

Pacquiao, Barrios expect pleasantries to end quickly in Vegas

Nearly four years after his last professional fight, boxing legend Manny Pacquiao returns to the ring on Saturday night, where he will face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in a title bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The beloved fighter, 46, known to many as "PacMan" is giving up four inches in reach (71 inches vs. 67 inches), more than six inches in height (6-foot to 5-foot-5-1/2) and more than 16 years in age to Barrios, who will defend his belt for the second time. Pacquiao (62-8-2) already holds the record for most titles. A win Saturday would extend his mark to 13 across eight weight classes. While preparing for the fight, Pacquiao has said he has retained his passion for the sport and the hunger to be a champion once again. "I'm still active in terms of exercise, training like (a boxer). The fans might be worried about my condition, but that's what I need to prove," the Filipino fighter said at a press conference Wednesday. Pacquiao lost his last pro fight in a unanimous decision to Yordenis Ugas on Aug. 21, 2021. His most recent pro win came six years ago this Sunday against Keith Thurman in the same arena where he'll fight Saturday. In the interim, Pacquiao has fought in two exhibition matches. The last took place on July 28, 2024. It was a three-round bout against Japanese MMA fighter Rukiya Anpo. With no judges scoring, the match was ruled a draw as neither fighter delivered a knockout. Pacquiao fought at 152 pounds in the fight. The welterweight class goes up to 147. The former Philippine senator, who fell short in a May election to return to office, is no stranger to Vegas. He's fought there 22 times over the past 24 years. Wednesday's press conference was cordial between the camps, but Barrios (29-2-1) said the pleasantries will end once the two enter the ring. "I can't think of anything bad to say about him, other than he's facing me for my title," the Mexican-American fighter told reporters. "It's all smiles right now. It has been during this whole lead-up, but come fight night, you know that smile, it's not going to be on his face anymore, and neither will mine." There will be scores of fans hoping that Pacquiao can reclaim his magic once more. However, it's Barrios, who fought Abel Ramos to a draw last November to keep the belt, who comes into the match as a heavy favorite. The weigh-in for the bout will take place on Friday. --Field Level Media/ Reuters
