What will a CAF Champions League victory for Mamelodi Sundowns do for SA football?
It was their last game of the league season, and they had already clinched the title last week. In fact, they could probably have secured the trophy a fair bit sooner if second-placed Orlando Pirates had not had three games in hand.
On Sunday, Sundowns were officially awarded their Betway Premiership title after their 2-0 win over Magesi at Loftus Versfeld Stadium , in Pretoria.
Mamelodi Sundowns are the best team in South Africa by some distance, and winning their eighth league title in a row is testament to this.
Mamelodi Sundowns Set Sights on CAF Champions League Glory and 2025 FIFA Club World Cup
Now, Sundowns will turn their attention to the CAF Champions League as they take on Pyramids over two legs in the final of the competition. The first leg will be at Loftus on Saturday, with the return fixture a week later at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.
Should Sundowns win the final, there will be no dispute that they are the best team in Africa. It would go well with their other title, as the richest club on the continent.
Sundowns will also be in action in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup next month.
Not that they were struggling for cash, but Mamelodi Sundowns will earn a handy R174 million simply for playing in the competition.
It seems then, the domination of Sundowns is set to continue at least for a few more years while teams like Pirates have to be content with the cup competitions on offer.
Ultimately, having one team dominate like Sundowns have - it's debatable whether that's actually a good thing but the fact that Bafana Bafana are the strongest they have been in decades surely can't be just a coincidence.

Kaizer Chiefs are everywhere — sparking a national dialogue in SA
Celebrating Chiefs' victories — and South African resilience — one tot of tequila at a time. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Kaizer Chiefs — they're everywhere And by everywhere, I mean especially after they won their first two matches of the Betway Premiership. Even more so if you are caught wearing an Orlando Pirates shirt after those victories, with my side of the aisle looking rather grim following the opposite results — two losses in as many matches. Walk around town in the iconic black, the skull and crossbones embroidered on your breast, and you are more than likely to get the customary greeting — arms crossed at the wrist — or a sardonic smile from those who follow the Glamour Boys, challenging you with an 'Amakhosi for life.' Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Find yourself in a pub, and you might just be forced to shoot a grim shot of tequila, crowned by a slice of orange, to the health and victory of Chiefs — as was the case this past Wednesday at a launch event wholly unrelated to Premier Soccer League matters. That's the type of national dialogue I enjoy … the one that reminds me that, when it comes to South Africans, we are all very much the same despite creed and politics; and in spite of what the toxic cesspools of social media will spout, or our political leaders might blast over a loudhailer. And it doesn't take an eye-watering amount of money to inspire it. Truth be told, domestic football needs Chiefs to be successful. They remain the biggest brand — the marquee sporting name in this country — regardless of the success of Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates, the Springboks lifting two consecutive Rugby World Cups, or the Proteas finally getting their hands on a major ICC trophy … cup … mace … thing. Despite the PSL's shoddy administration — poor officiating, suspect scheduling, last season's Royal AM saga, and clubs being sold like cookies at a church bazaar — football in this country continues to thrive. That resilience is mirrored across other major sporting codes, which survive despite questionable boardroom decisions and a lack of adequate state support. All goals scored within regulation time contribute towards our Goals For Charity initiative. After our Quarter Final round, we're sitting at a whopping 15 goals! The #MTN8 Defending Champions, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns both contributed 6 of those goals! 🔥 How… — MTN8 Wafa Wafa! (@MTN8) August 14, 2025 If our football can flourish under such conditions, it's no surprise that South Africans as a people continue to persevere through far greater challenges — a resilience that defines us beyond the pitch. Our sovereignty might be undermined by nations with ridiculous foreign policy agendas, while graft cripples infrastructure and service delivery, yet no nation can pull itself up from the bootstraps like we do. If recent sporting events have proven anything, it's this: we South Africans are a bunch of champions, consistently let down only by the fumbling ineptitude of our leaders across the political spectrum — right to left. On Saturday, that camaraderie will once again be on display.

Orlando Pirates: Saleng and Kimvuidi could return to rescue the ship
Orlando Pirates could very well recall Monnapule Saleng and Karim Kimvuidi should the need arise. The two are among the players the club loaned out this season as new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou looks to trim down the squad. After not featuring for two matches this season, Kimvuidi resurfaced in Israel and it was later reported that he had joined FC Ashdod on loan. The 23-year-old Congolese midfielder made his debut in Israel last Saturday in a Cup game against Hapoel Tel Aviv. Orlando Pirates stated on Thursday that Kimvuidi joined Ashdood on a one-season loan deal with the option of a permanent transfer. 'After receiving a glimpse of his abilities in the last game – the Congolese midfielder Karim Kimwedi signed with the club until the end of the season on loan with an option to purchase for another three years,' Ashdod wrote. 'The 23-year-old attacking midfielder who can also play on the wings comes to us from Orlando Pirates, whose team has won two trophies in the last two years in the South African Premier League.' With injuries and players struggling to find form, the Buccaneers might be tempted to bring the Congolese back especially if he impresses in Israel. Another player who could return is Monnapule Saleng. The speedy winger is at Orbit College on a season loan, but if he finds the back of the net regularly, he could very well be back in Mayfair in January. Orlando Pirates boss to be sacked in September
It's early days, but the 2025-2026 Betway Premiership campaign has started appallingly for Orlando Pirates and coach Ouaddou Abdeslam. The Buccaneers have lost their opening two league matches. Next up is an MTN8 semi-final against Sundowns. 'Nkota is already a better player after leaving Pirates' It seems crazy to suggest it, but Abdeslam Ouaddou's job could already be on the line at Orlando Pirates. If they lose in the MTN8 semis against Sundowns on Saturday, that pressure will only crank up a notch. And if they lose more ground in the title race this month, they could already be out of the picture, such is the relentlessness of the pace usually set by the Brazilians at the summit. Details: Saleng returns to Orbit College The MTN8 clash against Sundowns is set for Saturday, 16 August at 15:00. Poor results in August's remaining league fixtures against Stellenbosch, Orbit and Chippa would likely see Abdeslam's head on the chopping block. He was a key figure last season alongside breakout star Mbekezeli Mbokazi in the heart of defence after Thabiso Sesane was struck down with a long-term injury. What happens when Sesane returns will be fascinating, as he might even dislodge the new captain. That's a nice problem for new boss Ouaddao to have, though. Sibisi made 42 appearances last season across all competitions, including 25 in the league. The Sea Robbers have started this season in awful shape, losing to Sekhukhune and Marumo Gallants.
