What will a CAF Champions League victory for Mamelodi Sundowns do for SA football?

IOL News19-05-2025

LONG TERM EFFECT Mamelodi Sundowns' CAF Champions League victory could cement their status as Africa's top club, boost South African football's prestige, and secure lucrative rewards, and would go a long way to ensuring their domination of the local landscape will continue unabated. It was their last game of the league season, and they had already clinched the title last week. In fact, they could probably have secured the trophy a fair bit sooner if second-placed Orlando Pirates had not had three games in hand.
On Sunday, Sundowns were officially awarded their Betway Premiership title after their 2-0 win over Magesi at Loftus Versfeld Stadium , in Pretoria.
Mamelodi Sundowns are the best team in South Africa by some distance, and winning their eighth league title in a row is testament to this.
Mamelodi Sundowns Set Sights on CAF Champions League Glory and 2025 FIFA Club World Cup
Now, Sundowns will turn their attention to the CAF Champions League as they take on Pyramids over two legs in the final of the competition. The first leg will be at Loftus on Saturday, with the return fixture a week later at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.
Should Sundowns win the final, there will be no dispute that they are the best team in Africa. It would go well with their other title, as the richest club on the continent.
Sundowns will also be in action in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup next month.
Not that they were struggling for cash, but Mamelodi Sundowns will earn a handy R174 million simply for playing in the competition.
It seems then, the domination of Sundowns is set to continue at least for a few more years while teams like Pirates have to be content with the cup competitions on offer.
Ultimately, having one team dominate like Sundowns have - it's debatable whether that's actually a good thing but the fact that Bafana Bafana are the strongest they have been in decades surely can't be just a coincidence.

NEW: Orlando Pirates make approach for exciting SA U20 star!

Orlando Pirates look to be moving like a team possessed before the transfer window even opens ahead of next season. Pirates will see themselves begin a new era under a new coach and also seemingly a vastly changed squad. The club are rumoured to have already reached transfer agreements with at least six players in that regard. One of those players is thought to be Richards's Bay FC left-back Nkosikhona Ndaba. But having lost two experienced players in that position, they will need more than just one signing. Pirates will see both captain Innocent Maela and long-serving star Paseka Mako depart the club at the end of the June. Maela, who saw his game time reduce more and more over the last two seasons, has a big decision to make. After saying goodbye to the Pirates fans on the field, he has reportedly been offered a role off it. The 33-year-old has yet to confirm whether he will take up that opportunity and hang up his boots, or continue playing elsewhere. Mako on the other hand, leaves the cub as a free agent and is reportedly Kaizer Chiefs -bound. Now it has been reported by Karabo Phasha of SuperSport that Pirates have made an approach for Neo Rapoo. The young left-back plays for SuperSport United and also played every game for the SA U20 side that won the U20 Afcon in Egypt last month. '𝐏𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐑𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐨 Orlando Pirates have enquired about the availability of U20 & SuperSport United LB Neo Rapoo. Pirates have already called his agent a few weeks ago about the possibilities around him.' He posted on his official X account. Pirates fans, is Rapoo the right signing to replace Maela and Mako? Orlando Pirates transfer news: Mofokeng and Moremi

Teko Modise had all the experience of being an Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana poster boy, just like Relebohile Mofokeng in 2025. The Soweto-born legend has sent what sounds like a plea to Orlando Pirates regarding the future of the 20-year-old Mofokeng. Randfontein-born star had a decent season with 12 goals and 15 assists in 49 games. According to Modise, Mofokeng is ripe to take the ideal next step in his career. It is a move to Europe, where football is at its highest level. Kaizer Chiefs questioned for signing 31-year-old 'When it comes to Rele, it's very difficult for Orlando Pirates to sell, especially when it comes to top players,' Modise told FARPost on the talented Sea Robber. 'The last time they had a player who was exciting like that was [Thembinkosi] Lorch. Yes, sometimes, as South African fans, we want to see the youngsters go further abroad and do great things,' the Orlando Pirates legend added… Full story here. Betway Premiership giants Orlando Pirates are linked with another player from AmaZulu FC. The Sea Robbers signed Tapelo Xoki and Makhahleni Makhaula from the same club since 2022. With the likes of Gilberto and Katlego Otladisa set to leave the Buccaneers, reports say Orlando Pirates are close to signing Tshepang Moremi. The speedy winger, with a similar touch and grace to Lebohang 'Cheeseboy' Mokoena, was born in Sharpville, Gateung, which is the same hometown as Relebohile Mofokeng… Full story here.
