HBO has made its first casting announcement for its upcoming "Harry Potter" live-action series, filling fans in on who will be playing Hogwarts' most famous - and infamous - faculty.
The identities of the six cast members playing Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Rubeus Hagrid, Professor Quirrell and Argus Filch were announced Monday as the series approaches its first planned filming date.
'We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,' said Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer, in a statement. 'We're delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can't wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.'

Some of the newly announced casting was alluded to or leaked in advance, such as Lithgow as Dumbledore and Frost as Hagrid.
While we don't yet know the rest of the cast, including the titular character and his group of friends, an open casting call was issued in September 2024 for the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione. It called for actors who would be between the ages of 9 and 11 in April 2025, indicating that the decision may be made soon, if not already made.
Filming is expected to begin in the summer of 2025. A release date is still forthcoming.
Here's what we know about the series and cast so far.

What we know about the upcoming 'Harry Potter' HBO series
The "Harry Potter" TV series will be released over the course of 10 years, with each season being an authentic adaptation of J.K. Rowling's original novels. Through a television series format as opposed to the films, the show will be able to "dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,' according to Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content.
In a press event unveiling the show, Bloys added, "We truly have the time to tell more in-depth stories in ways the world has never seen before," noting that the series will "stand alongside" the films while reaching an "entirely new generation" of fans.
The series is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner, along with Mark Mylod, who will executive-produce and direct multiple episodes. The series is also executive produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

Clip of Actress Arabella Stanton in Acting Class Has HARRY POTTER Fans Convinced She'll Be a Perfect Hermione — GeekTyrant

Last week, it was revealed that the upcoming Warner Bros. HBO series based on the Harry Potter book series had found its young lead actors. It was announced that Dominic McLaughlin will take up the iconic round glasses and lightning scar as Harry Potter; Arabella Stanton steps into the brilliant, bold shoes of Hermione Granger; and Alastair Stout rounds out the trio as Ron Weasley. While these three kids are new to us now, they will likely become household names as the show continues, just as the actors who took on the roles in the films. But because they are newcomers, we don't have anything to verify that they are good for the role yet, aside from the fact that they were chosen from tons of others in a very selective process. It's a wait and see situation, for the most part, with one exception. A new clip has surfaced on Reddit, which shows actress Arabella Stanton in a scene from her acting class, which has Hermione Granger written all over it. Check it out at the link, and get ready to dive back into the world of Hogwarts on the HBO series, coming to our screens in 2026.
