Taylor County Commission approves purchase of new police K9
GRAFTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — Last week, The Taylor County Commission approved the purchase of a new K9 unit, which it hopes to receive by the summer. 12 News spoke with Taylor County officials on Monday to hear about how this will help the community.
'A K9 will help with narcotic detection, missing person location, evidence searches, demonstrations, criminal apprehension. I mean there's a lot of benefits with the purchase of the K9,' Taylor County Commission President Orville Wright said.

This new K9 will be a replacement for the current K9 that the Sheriff's Office uses. The cost of the K9 is $40,368, but the commission has only been approved for a $6,250 grant. To offset part of the remaining cost, the commission is applying to two other groups, which would bring the cost down to around $23,000.

The stop was part of Operation Summer Peace, which put extra officers and K9 units on patrol during the summer months. Things escalated when a police dog detected narcotics in the car. 'Open the GTA game. That's dope. That's what they're holding dope in,' an officer says in body camera video provided by police. Inside a Grand Theft Auto video game case, officers found marijuana. Also in the car, officers found powdered cocaine, crack cocaine and fentanyl pills. They also recovered two guns, one of which was reported stolen. 'It's a great thing when you have these drugs off the street and not in the possible hands of young children, especially when they're being advertised as such,' Gwinnett Cpl. Juan Madiedo told Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson. The arrests add to Operation Summer Peace results. The initiative uses increased patrols and community meetings to address summer crime trends. Both men were booked into the Gwinnett County Jail. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
