Commanders linebacker Von Miller still confident in pass rushing

Reuters7 days ago
July 25 - Eight-time All-Pro linebacker and new Washington Commander Von Miller is 36 years old and hasn't notched double-digit sacks since 2018. Yet his confidence in his passing ability is unwavering.
"I can still roll out of bed at 36 years old with my shoes on and rush the passer," Miller said Thursday. "I can do that right when I wake up fresh out of sleep. I love rushing the passer."
Miller joined a Washington squad in need of pass rushers on a one-year, $6.1 million contract. The Commanders notched 43 sacks last year, 11th-most in the league, but lost their sack leader Dante Fowler Jr. (10.5) in free agency.
Once one of the NFL's most feared defenders and an every-down player, Miller has evolved into a situational pass rusher; he played only 25.27 percent of Buffalo's defensive snaps last season.
Washington will especially lean on its younger rotational pass rush pieces, given that they were one of the worst run defenses in the league last season and need defensive ends who can set the edge.
The surefire Hall of Famer has won two Super Bowls -- in 2015 with the Denver Broncos and 2021 with the Los Angeles Rams. After three years with a Buffalo Bills squad that couldn't make it over the hump, he signed with Washington to contend for another.
The Commanders made a surprise trip to the NFC championship game last year, the franchise's first since 1991. They currently hold the seventh-best Super Bowl odds ahead of next season.
"You can't just leave Josh Allen for anywhere," Miller said. "You can't go from the AFC championship and go anywhere. ... This team is all about winning. I'm all about winning. That's why I'm here is to win."

Emotional NFL commissioner Roger Goodell left choked up in first interview after deadly shooting at NYC offices

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was overcome with emotion as he conducted his first interview since the deadly shooting at the league's headquarters in New York. On Monday night, Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old licensed private investigator from Las Vegas, opened fire at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, killing four people. NYPD have since claimed that Tamura was targeting the NFL offices on another floor but entered the wrong elevator and instead ended up at a real estate office. In the following days, Goodell released a solemn letter addressing the issue and asking colleagues to stay away from the league's Manhattan's offices. Then, on Thursday night, Goodell appeared on NBC's broadcast ahead of the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game to once again speak on the matter. Reflecting on the death of NYPD officer Didarul Islam, Goodell said: 'Well, first, [it's a] tremendous loss. You see the officer's family, his young children... it's something that happens in the line of work for police officers but that never makes it easy. The tragedy unfolded Monday night when Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas exited a double-parked BMW armed with a rifle before entering the midtown-Manhattan skyscraper '[He's] somebody that we see outside the building most every day when we come in. And it hits home, the unnecessary and unexplainable loss. 'It's something that all of us as New Yorkers feel a great pride in the NYPD and the first responders. It was a difficult, emotional afternoon.' While Tamura did not enter the fifth floor - where the NFL headquarters are located - officers have determined that he was in fact trying to locate the league's office. Reflecting on that fact, Goodell said: 'It's a difficult thing, particularly when you're dealing with a senseless act like this. 'There are no excuses for the senseless acts. They're hard for all of us to understand. When it inflicts pain on people you know and people you care about and people you deal with on a daily basis, that's particularly hard. 'But as you know, these acts of senseless violence are happening in our country and around our world far too often. In churches, and schools and synagogues and other places that this should just not be happening. 'We all have to continue to be vigilant and continue to protect ourselves. The NFL is going to continue to do that with our employees and our people.' Goodell also provided an update on the NFL employee who was injured during the shooting and insisted that he's 'stable and improving'. The league commissioner revealed that he got to speak with the family after visiting the victim in the hospital. (via @NFL) — FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) August 1, 2025 The tragedy unfolded Monday night when Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas exited a BMW armed with a rifle before entering the midtown-Manhattan skyscraper. New York Police Department officials say Tamura then fired on one officer and sprayed the lobby with bullets before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot another person and killed himself. A note found in his wallet later implied he was upset with the NFL over his belief he was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma. CTE, as it is known, can only be diagnosed posthumously. Tamura, who was reportedly a former high school football player, asked to have his brain studied after his death. Police say he had a history of mental illness.

Reports: Commanders WR Terry McLaurin requests trade

August 1 - Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin has requested a trade, according to multiple reports on Thursday. Frustrated by the lack of progress in negotiations toward a contract extension, McLaurin sat out the first four days of training camp before reporting on Sunday. After reporting, he can no longer be fined $50,000 per day. McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, became a hold-in and was placed on the team's physically unable to perform list with an apparent ankle injury suffered last season. He did not attend organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. He did, however, participate in spring workouts. "You'd like to get these things done quicker, but it doesn't always happen that way," general manager Adam Peters said. "Whatever happens along the way, just understand he's a great player and we want to keep him here." With a base salary of $15.5 million and cap hit of $25.5 million in the final season of a three-year, $68.3 million contract, the speedster is coming off a career year with 1,096 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns and 82 receptions on 117 targets. He added three scores and 227 yards on 14 receptions in three playoff games. McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels helped lead Washington (12-5) to its best season since it won the Super Bowl in 1991. The Commanders knocked off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC wild-card round and Detroit Lions in the divisional round before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. Over six seasons with Washington, the two-time Pro Bowl selection (2022, 2024) has 6,379 receiving yards, 38 touchdowns and 460 catches in 97 games. A team captain, McLaurin has hit the 1,000-yard mark for a franchise-record five straight seasons despite instability at the quarterback position before Daniels' NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign. --Field Level Media

Louis Rees-Zammit returns to rugby after bringing NFL quest to end

Louis Rees-Zammit will return to rugby this summer, ending his quest to make it in the NFL with immediate effect. The Times understands that Rees-Zammit has not yet signed a contract with a rugby club, but this announcement will have put several on alert. 'It was a great experience, but he's coming back to his real sport,' a source said. Rees-Zammit traded rugby for American football in January 2024, before that year's Six Nations, when he left the Gallagher Prem side Gloucester and joined the NFL's International Player Pathway scheme. He signed for the Kansas City Chiefs to play as a running back in March last year and made a handful of appearances in pre-season, but was released during the summer. The Jacksonville Jaguars picked Rees-Zammit up in August 2024, where he was listed as a wide receiver, but he failed to play a full-blown NFL match. On Thursday he announced he would be quitting American football to return to rugby. 'It's been a great experience but it's time to come home,' Rees-Zammit wrote on social media. 'I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season. There's only one thing that's on my mind, that's coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can't explain how excited I am!' The Welshman is still only 24 years old, is able to sign for any team across the world and will be eligible to play for his country. Any Welsh player with fewer than 25 caps is ineligible for international selection if they play outside of the country but Rees-Zammit won 32 Wales caps before he left rugby. That means the new Wales head coach, Steve Tandy, would be able to select Rees-Zammit for November's Autumn Nations Series matches against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa. Despite not playing the sport for almost 18 months, Rees-Zammit will be in high demand from rugby clubs across Europe. Before he left Gloucester, Rees-Zammit earned about £225,000 a year. Some top clubs in the Prem may find it difficult to sign him at this late stage and fit his salary into the £6.4million cap, but not all teams pay up to the top limit. Racing 92, the French Top 14 side, were interested in signing Rees-Zammit before he left rugby. Clubs in France have more money to play with, as their cap sits at £9.25million (€10.7million). Rees-Zammit started his youth career at Cardiff Rugby, as his family lives in the capital city, but moved to Hartpury College across the border when he was 16, as he felt he would have more success developing a rugby career there. During the 2018-19 season he became Gloucester's youngest ever league player at 18 years 70 days, and then the youngest player to score a hat-trick in the league in December 2019. In 2021 he was part of the British & Irish Lions squad that toured South Africa, but did not play in a Test match against the Springboks. That year he was part of the Welsh side that won the Six Nations title. His final match for Wales was the 2023 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina in Marseille, a 29-17 defeat. Rees-Zammit always intended to come back to rugby within the next year to try to make the 2027 World Cup. Rees-Zammit was part of the Jaguars' 17-man practice squad last season, but was not elevated to the main roster to play. Practice squad players can be elevated up to three times during a season but the former rugby star was not called upon. He suffered a back injury this summer, which scuppered his chances of making the early pre-season fixtures in August. Speaking earlier this year Rees-Zammit said: 'International players get probably two to three years to make it in the NFL. So I wanted to do it at a time where I maybe could come back to rugby. I'm 24 now, probably got one to two more years to try and make it depending on how this year goes. I'll be 25, 26 when I go back to rugby. I like to think I can still play at the highest level.'
