India may become our largest market, says CEO Altman as OpenAI launches GPT-5
Hailing India as an 'incredibly fast-growing" market, Altman noted the remarkable pace at which Indian citizens and businesses are adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI).
'India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest market. It's incredibly fast-growing, but what users are doing with AI, what citizens of India are doing with AI, is really quite remarkable.
'We're especially focused on bringing products to India, working with local partners to make AI work great for India and make it more affordable for people across the country.
'We've been paying a lot of attention here given the rate of growth and I am excited to come for a visit in September," Altman said during a media briefing.
OpenAI on Thursday announced the launch of GPT-5, describing it as its 'best model yet for coding and agentic tasks".
'We're releasing GPT-5 in three sizes in the API — gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano — to give developers more flexibility to trade off performance, cost, and latency. While GPT-5 in ChatGPT is a system of reasoning, non-reasoning, and router models, GPT-5 in the API platform is the reasoning model that powers maximum performance in ChatGPT.
'Notably, GPT-5 with minimal reasoning is a different model than the non-reasoning model in ChatGPT, and is better tuned for developers. The non-reasoning model used in ChatGPT is available as gpt-5-chat-latest," OpenAI said in a blogpost.
The new model is a major upgrade over its predecessor, GPT-4, and represents a 'pretty significant step" toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Altman said.
'GPT-5 is really the first time that I think one of our mainline models has felt like you can ask a legitimate expert, like a PhD-level expert, anything… We wanted to simplify it and make it accessible. We wanted to make it available in our free tier for the first time," he said.
Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, added that the new model significantly improves understanding across more than 12 Indian languages.
'GPT-5 significantly improves multilingual understanding across over 12 Indian languages, including regional languages. So that's really exciting because as Sam mentioned, India is a priority market for us," Turley said.
The rollout of GPT-5 began on August 7 for free, Plus, and Pro users, with Enterprise and Education users gaining access a week later. PTI ANK ARI

‘Regulatory, geopolitical issues' affected 2,458 flights in India in 2025—Modi govt to Parliament
The data was provided by Minister of State (MoS) for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, in response to an unstarred question by Congress MPs K.C. Venugopal, Jyotsna Mahant and Kirsan Namdeo. The period in question included flights either rescheduled or cancelled during as well as in the immediate aftermath of Operation Sindoor and regulatory inspections following the crash of AI-171 in Ahmedabad. New Delhi: As many as 2,458 commercial flights were either rescheduled or cancelled across India in the first six months of 2025 on account of 'regulatory issues and geopolitical issues,' the Modi government told Parliament Thursday. Though it did not list specific reasons. According to the written response, Indigo recorded the most instances of rescheduling/cancellations at 1,017 followed by Air India (662), Air India Express (427), SpiceJet (334), and Akasa Air (18). In his response, Mohol also said that the number of passengers ferried by domestic airlines during the January-June 2025 period increased by 7.34 percent when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Interestingly, while the Congress MPs sought data on flights 'cancelled and rescheduled due to regulatory or technical issues and foreign governmental disturbance,' the minister in his reply referred to the data as that of flights cancelled/rescheduled due to 'regulatory and geopolitical issues'. Also Read: 'Mayday' protocol to navigating weather, inside the challenging job of an air traffic controller Private airport operators perform better In response to a separate unstarred question by Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka, Mohol furnished data on Airport Service Quality (ASQ) rankings compiled by Canada-headquartered Airport Council International (ACI). The written reply classified airports under three categories: those operated by Airports Authority of India (AAI); leased to private players after 2019; and being operated on public-private partnership (PPP) model. Leasing involves a private company taking over operations and management of an existing airport for a set period, while the PPP model is when private and public players come together to develop, finance and manage the operations of an airport. According to the minister's reply, the average rating of the seven PPP airports—including the ones in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Cochin, Goa (MOPA) and Kannur—was 4.99 out of 5 in the year 2024. All PPP airports, with the exception of the one in Bengaluru and Goa (MOPA) scored a perfect 5. On the other hand, the average rating of the six airports leased by AAI after 2019 was 4.94 and that of 15 airports managed by AAI was 4.81. In 2018, the Government of India constituted the Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) under the Chairmanship of CEO, NITI Aayog, to take forward the bidding process to lease six AAI-run airports. In total, the process invited 32 bids from 10 players after which these airports were leased to highest bidders. The leased and PPP airports are subject to routine monitoring by AAI through independent engineers, auditors, and inspections. In his reply Mohol said, 'Investments by PPP partners leads to increased economic activity, which in turn creates additional jobs.' Adding, 'Development of airports leads to increase in passenger movements, tourism development, employment generation and augmentation in circle rates of land valuation resulting in enhanced collection of various taxes/stamp duties etc., in the respective state and contributes to the overall development of the country.' Trump Rules Out Trade Talks With India Until Tariff Dispute Over Russian Oil Purchases Resolved
US President Donald Trump has categorically rejected the possibility of resuming trade discussions with India following his decision to impose comprehensive 50% tariffs on Indian imports, marking a significant deterioration in bilateral economic relations between the two nations. When questioned by reporters in the Oval Office about potential future negotiations, Trump firmly stated that talks would not proceed until the current trade dispute is resolved. His comments underscore the administration's hardline approach toward countries maintaining economic ties with Russia amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The escalation began when Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday implementing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, bringing the total levy to 50% effective August 27. The punitive measures specifically target India's continued petroleum purchases from Russia, with the US administration arguing that such transactions undermine Western sanctions against Moscow. Trump's decision comes alongside threats of secondary sanctions against nations conducting business with Russia, as Washington intensifies pressure on countries to sever economic links with Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. The US president has demanded that countries choose between maintaining Russian trade relationships or facing economic penalties. India has responded with strong criticism, characterizing the American tariff measures as fundamentally unjust and economically unreasonable. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India's energy imports are determined by market dynamics and the imperative of ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion citizens, rejecting any external interference in sovereign decision-making. Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a defiant response during his address at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference on Thursday, declaring India's readiness to accept significant economic costs to protect national interests. Modi specifically emphasized his government's commitment to safeguarding farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers from external pressure. The Prime Minister's remarks highlighted India's determination to maintain policy independence regardless of international economic coercion. Modi stated that protecting agricultural communities remains the government's highest priority, even if such stance results in personal or national economic sacrifice. India has highlighted what it perceives as inconsistent American policy implementation, noting that other major Russian oil importers like China and Turkey have not faced similar punitive measures. This selective enforcement has raised questions about the fairness and strategic motivations behind the US tariff policy. The situation reveals complex geopolitical dynamics, as China and Turkey continue purchasing Russian energy without equivalent American retaliation. India, China, and Turkey represent the three largest importers of Russian petroleum, yet only India faces the new tariff regime, suggesting potential diplomatic or strategic considerations influencing US policy decisions. Interestingly, Washington maintains a temporary suspension of 145% tariffs on Chinese goods under a negotiated truce set to expire on August 12. This arrangement, designed to facilitate ongoing superpower negotiations, contrasts sharply with the immediate penalties imposed on India, further highlighting perceived inconsistencies in American trade policy. The trade dispute represents a significant test of US-India relations, which have generally strengthened over recent decades through strategic partnerships in defense, technology, and regional security cooperation. The current tensions threaten to undermine broader diplomatic coordination between the world's largest democracies at a time when both nations face common challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
