Is James Gunn Still Going to Explore the Dilemma of Superman in Modern Times?

Geek Feed21-05-2025

We know that James Gunn wanted to take Superman in another direction, but we're still not clear how his Man of Steel is going to be different come July when Superman hits theaters.
Just in, a new trailer has dropped for the movie, and it has a very interesting character exchange between Superman (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). Check this out:
It's interesting because we're still getting the same kind of modern discussion about what Superman stands for and how the modern world is going to react to him; it's basically the same issue with Cavill's Man of Steel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice .
While the trailers have all been joke-y so far, I was actually surprised that we would have a scene with Clark and Lois just screaming at each other about the complexities of politics and how Superman acts. It's not clear how far Gunn is going to explore that, but it is kind of interesting that this Superman also has a bunch of quips as he's fighting some meta-humans.
Here's the official description for Superman :
'Superman,' DC Studios' first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.
Catch Superman when it comes to cinemas on July 11.

Chris McQuarrie's Man of Steel Sequel Included Green Lantern

Before James Gunn's Superman , there was rumblings going around that Mission: Impossible director Chris McQuarrie wanted to make a sequel to Man of Steel with Henry Cavill. The project never took off, but with some time away from it, McQuarrie has revealed that his original plan had Superman teaming up with a Green Lantern in the movie. Talking to Happy Sad Confused, McQuarrie revealed, 'I'll never tell, but boy was it f*cking good. Green Lantern was what had come to me, and Green Lantern's a tough one. The power is very challenging, and I cracked it, and it was fun, and watching him learn how to use that power, and giving that power a flaw so it was not pure invincibility…' McQuarrie explained that he managed to find a flaw with GL by capitalizing on the need to charge the ring. He explains ,'The whole concept of Green Lantern is the ring has to be recharged, and that's not a bug, hat's a feature… that for me solved the whole Green Lantern problem… the costume is another thing.' McQuarrie doesn't explain why exactly his pitch didn't push through, but it was probably because there was a lot of studio drama, and it was said that the heads around that time had no intention of bringing back Henry Cavill's Superman until the Rock forced their hand with Black Adam . Personally, I was rooting for the DCEU to come back after The Flash , but things happened, and James Gunn and Peter Safran weren't interested, so now we're getting another DC reboot with Superman . Hopefully there's some kind of Elseworlds plot that can bring back Cavill, but for now, a new Superman flies into theaters on July 11. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is now out in theaters.

Wait, is DC's Sgt. Rock Starring Colin Farrell Cancelled or What?

Luca Guadagnino is probably best known for his horny movies with beautiful actors, so it was kind of a surprise when it was said that he would be directing Sgt. Rock for DC. After news of actors like Colin Farrell joining the film, it looks like the movie has caught another snag. Reports have come out that the movie had been cancelled, but THR says that Sgt. Rock 'was not going away, and would be reassessed at the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026'. Originally the film was set to start shooting this year, but scheduling had become a conflict because the movie needed to shoot some sequences outdoors. As far as we know, DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran love the script, and the movie has a modest budget that won't break the bank like any MCU project. Besides Farrell, Mike Faist ( Challengers ) was said to have been cast in the movie. As far as story goes, it's said to focus on Sgt. Rock and the men of Easy Company as they try to get to the Holy Spear before the Nazis do. I'll admit, I was already skeptical about the project based on the obscurity of the character, but I guess you can bet on James Gunn to want to give the spotlight to weirder heroes, seeing that he is the guy who put the Guardians of the Galaxy on the map. I'm hoping that Sgt. Rock gets off the ground soon. No release date has been set, but the movie is now aiming to start shooting sometime next year.
