Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal reveal how 'The Accountant 2' action scenes are different from 'Batman' and 'The Punisher'

Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal are set to team up in the upcoming action flick 'The Accountant 2'. The duo, who play the leading men in the upcoming film, got candid about stepping up with guns blazing in this Gavin O'Connor directorial. No stranger to action roles, the two stars have earned quite the fan following for their roles in previous blockbuster franchises like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Punisher. At 'The Accountant 2' global press conference, attended by ETimes, the duo discussed how the sequel focuses on emotionally grounded action rather than mere action spectacle. For Ben, who portrayed Batman in the DC Extended Universe, the physical demands of The Accountant 2 felt distinct due to the personal stakes woven into the narrative. The actor, who returned to the sequel explained, "To me, what makes the action in The Accountant 2 so unique is that it's always rooted in character motivation. It's not about creating a shot that looks cool or building a sequence for visual flair. Everything is driven by what these characters want and why they are fighting in the first place. " The sequel continues the story of Christian Wolff (Affleck), a mathematical savant with lethal combat skills. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Accounting Automation Software Might Help You To Earn More Accounting Automation Software | Search ads Undo Unlike the large-scale action of Batman v Superman, the violence in The Accountant 2 remains gritty and intimate. Affleck noted, "It's always driven by what each character wants and why they're doing this. There's a grounded reason for every action, and Gavin's gift is to take that and make it visually compelling. " Director Gavin O'Connor echoed his sentiments, saying, "We didn't want the action to feel 'stunty' or separate from the characters." "By the third act, it was all about tracking how these brothers—Christian and Brax—are working together, how they're united. The choreography isn't just about the physicality; it's about the emotional connection between them." According to O'Connor, every sequence—no matter how explosive—serves a narrative purpose. "Action is like a dance; it's done in beats," the director explained. "But it only matters if it evokes emotion. Otherwise, it's just disposable violence." Jon Bernthal, who features as Brax, Christian's estranged but loyal brother, described how his character's journey is deeply intertwined with the film's themes of family and redemption. "You can't lie in a fight—you just can't," he remarked and added, "What you want is right there, so if you're going for it, you've got to know why. Gavin has a hunger to really dive into what makes these characters tick. For Brax, the emotional baggage from their childhood and their father's influence is always there. The violence isn't just for show—it's a way to express love and loyalty." Bernthal reflected on the mysterious nature of his character in the first film and how the sequel peels back layers of his relationship with his brother. "The first film left a lot unsaid about Brax. But here, it's about getting each other's backs, and being there for each other. In a strange way, the action scenes show how much these brothers love and need each other," he added. James Gunn Responds to 'Superman' Rumor

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. James Gunn responded to a rumor about the runtime of his upcoming film Superman on social media this week. Newsweek reached out to Gunn's representative via email for comment. The Context Gunn, 58, is the CEO of DC Studios and director of Superman, which will be released this summer. The first trailer for the highly anticipated film dropped in December and an extended sneak peek was shared during April's CinemaCon. The star-studded cast includes David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. Prior to 2025's Superman, the most recent Superman films were 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2013's Man of Steel and 2006's Superman Returns. James Gunn speaks about the movie "Superman" during the CinemaCon 2025 Warner Bros Pictures presentation at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on April 1, 2025. VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty Images What To Know On Wednesday, Gunn took to Threads to share an announcement about Superman. "Excited to bring @Superman to audiences in China on July 11," he wrote alongside a poster of the film in Chinese. In the comments of his post, Threads user @dcdomain wrote: "Hey james is the runtime for Superman locked? There's rumors that it's 2h2minutes." In response, Gunn said, "That is not correct. It's almost totally locked - meaning we're just finishing a couple VFX shots over the weekend - but that's not the running time." "Thank you James," @dcdomain wrote back. "Can't wait!" Last month, Gunn hinted at what fans can expect to see in the film. "The central conflict revolves a lot around Lex Luthor's attempts to defeat and destroy Superman," he told Entertainment Weekly in April. "I think Lex Luthor thinks of Superman in the way that an artist thinks of AI. Here's this guy who's this [incredible] genius scientist who's worked his whole life to become one of the richest, most powerful men in the world, and he does it all to be lauded. I mean, he wants to be the greatest, and suddenly this jerk comes in wearing a cape with a lantern jaw and a cocky grin, and he just takes all of the oxygen out of the room, out of the room of Earth, and it creates a burning hatred in the guy." What People Are Saying In the comments under Gunn's Threads response, many fans said they hope for an even longer runtime. @ "Thank Goodness! I really want this movie to be 2:20 or more, coz I want to spend more time in this world of James Gunn's Superman and with several of its characters!" @fahimmia01: "Hope its around 2h 30m long." @rickyjmarc: "Certainly hope it's a little longer than that. I haven't seen Superman on my theater screen in over a decade. Long overdue. Worth the runtime." @batmanvengeance2024: "I hope it's longer than 2 hour 10 minutes..." @malg.1234: "I would watch 5 hrs of this movie ngl even though obviously that's not possible." What Happens Next Superman hits theaters on July 11.

Is James Gunn Still Going to Explore the Dilemma of Superman in Modern Times?

We know that James Gunn wanted to take Superman in another direction, but we're still not clear how his Man of Steel is going to be different come July when Superman hits theaters. Just in, a new trailer has dropped for the movie, and it has a very interesting character exchange between Superman (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). Check this out: It's interesting because we're still getting the same kind of modern discussion about what Superman stands for and how the modern world is going to react to him; it's basically the same issue with Cavill's Man of Steel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . While the trailers have all been joke-y so far, I was actually surprised that we would have a scene with Clark and Lois just screaming at each other about the complexities of politics and how Superman acts. It's not clear how far Gunn is going to explore that, but it is kind of interesting that this Superman also has a bunch of quips as he's fighting some meta-humans. Here's the official description for Superman : 'Superman,' DC Studios' first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind. Catch Superman when it comes to cinemas on July 11.

Netflix movie 'works perfectly' despite huge stumbling block

Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead has been entertaining Netflix viewers since its release in May but some have raised a few issues with the movie before its sequel Army of Thieves Zack Snyder, known for his work on Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, showcased his cinematic prowess on Netflix with the 2021 post-apocalyptic feature. Army of the Dead is a zombie heist movie boasting a stellar cast that has kept audiences riveted. A critic on Rotten Tomatoes described the film as an "unusual creation," but found that it surprisingly comes together well for them. ‌ Their review read: "Very unusual production. The director plays with many motifs and genres here, creating a very unusual creation that, despite its quirks, works perfectly, not only laying the foundations for a new universe well but also introducing a lot of threads that will provide food for all theory fans. Time loop? Aliens? It's all here." ‌ Set against the backdrop of a Las Vegas now desolate and swarming with zombies due to a catastrophic government failure, the plot unfolds. A wealthy casino owner has millions stashed in a vault, and a band of mercenaries possesses the necessary skills to recover it. Risking it all, they embark on a perilous journey into the infested territory, aiming to execute an audacious financial heist. They are enticed by the billionaire's irresistible offer to retrieve the cash before the US president executes a plan to obliterate the city overrun by zombies, reports the Mirror US. A critic said: "Zack Snyder's ridiculously entertaining latest is a zombie heist movie with gore at its core." Meanwhile, one cinema-goer conceded the film was "not great," but confessed they still had "a lot of fun." Despite a brief stint in US cinemas, coinciding with its digital debut on Netflix, 'Army of the Dead' clinched victory in the Oscars Fan Favorite contest at the 94th Academy Awards. During that fleeting theatrical exposure, the movie pocketed $1 million at the box office. ‌ "A thrilling cinematic experience that brilliantly blends action, horror, and a touch of dark humor" is how one review described Army of the Dead. The spectacle reputedly holds viewers riveted, meticulously engineering each segment for peak engagement. Bautista's portrayal drew particular praise: "David Bautista's performance is nothing short of extraordinary; he brings a deep, emotional complexity to his character that adds a surprising layer of depth to the film." The ensemble cast includes talents like ex-WWE star David Bautista, Omari Hardwick, 'Yellowjackets' star Ella Purnell, Theo Rossi, among others. However, one cast member didn't make it to the final cut – Chris D'Elia was erased using green screens and CGI following sexual misconduct allegations against him. ‌ While many lauded the performances across the board, some were less than thrilled. A viewer critiqued: "The worst roster of characters I've seen in a zombie movie, and probably the worst writing." A separate reviewer said: "Great zombie flick; the opening sequence alone was top-tier, over-the-top entertainment. The movie was flashy, had a great cast, and had a great story. So many questions that I just can't wait for them to be answered." They added: "Lots of crazy things you will spot after re-watching multiple times. Zack set a good foundation for a hopeful franchise to take off". Those seeking a no-fuss, adrenaline-fuelled zombie film can currently stream Army of the Dead on Netflix.

Netflix's heist movie 'works perfectly' despite huge problem

Zack Snyder, the mastermind behind blockbusters like Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, brought his superhero prowess to Netflix with his 2021 post-apocalyptic flick, Army of the Dead. The film, a zombie heist thriller boasting an impressive ensemble cast, has been keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. One critic on Rotten Tomatoes even hailed the film as an "unusual creation," but admitted that it all somehow works for them. They wrote: "Very unusual production. The director plays with many motifs and genres here, creating a very unusual creation that, despite its quirks, works perfectly, not only laying the foundations for a new universe well but also introducing a lot of threads that will provide food for all theory fans. Time loop? Aliens? It's all here." The plot unfolds in a deserted Las Vegas, now overrun by zombies due to government mishandling. A billionaire casino tycoon has left millions stashed in a vault, and a group of mercenaries have the skills needed to retrieve it. Risking it all, they decide to brave the danger zone in a bid to pull off a massive money heist. The billionaire makes them an offer they can't refuse - secure the cash before the US president's plans to nuke the zombie-infested city come into effect, reports the Mirror US. A critic added: "Zack Snyder's ridiculously entertaining latest is a zombie heist movie with gore at its core." Meanwhile, a viewer admitted the flick was "not great," yet conceded it was still "a lot of fun." Despite a brief stint on the big screens for just one week in the States, owing to its digital debut on Netflix, 'Army of the Dead' astonishingly nabbed the Oscars Fan Favorite title at the 94th Academy Awards. The film also raked in a cool $1 million at the box office during its fleeting theatre showcase. A pundit's take on the movie read: "Army of the Dead is a thrilling cinematic experience that brilliantly blends action, horror, and a touch of dark humor. The movie's intense pace keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, with each scene carefully crafted to deliver maximum impact. "David Bautista's performance is nothing short of extraordinary; he brings a deep, emotional complexity to his character that adds a surprising layer of depth to the film." Starring an ensemble that includes former WWE superstar David Bautista, Omari Hardwick, and 'Yellowjackets' star Ella Purnell alongside Theo Rossi among others, the film did however miss one initial member of its crew – Chris D'Elia, who was digitally excised following multiple sexual misconduct claims against him. The acting chops of the cast have been lauded by scores of fans, but not everyone was as impressed. Someone critiqued: "The worst roster of characters I've seen in a zombie movie, and probably the worst writing." One viewer wrote: "Great zombie flick; the opening sequence alone was top-tier, over-the-top entertainment. The movie was flashy, had a great cast, and had a great story. So many questions that I just can't wait for them to be answered." They added: "Lots of crazy things you will spot after re-watching multiple times. Zack set a good foundation for a hopeful franchise to take off". If you're in the mood for an action-packed, no-brainer zombie film, then Netflix's Army of the Dead is up for grabs right now on the streaming service.
