Netflix's heist movie 'works perfectly' despite huge problem
Zack Snyder, the mastermind behind blockbusters like Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, brought his superhero prowess to Netflix with his 2021 post-apocalyptic flick, Army of the Dead.
The film, a zombie heist thriller boasting an impressive ensemble cast, has been keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. One critic on Rotten Tomatoes even hailed the film as an "unusual creation," but admitted that it all somehow works for them.
They wrote: "Very unusual production. The director plays with many motifs and genres here, creating a very unusual creation that, despite its quirks, works perfectly, not only laying the foundations for a new universe well but also introducing a lot of threads that will provide food for all theory fans. Time loop? Aliens? It's all here."
The plot unfolds in a deserted Las Vegas, now overrun by zombies due to government mishandling. A billionaire casino tycoon has left millions stashed in a vault, and a group of mercenaries have the skills needed to retrieve it.
Risking it all, they decide to brave the danger zone in a bid to pull off a massive money heist. The billionaire makes them an offer they can't refuse - secure the cash before the US president's plans to nuke the zombie-infested city come into effect, reports the Mirror US.
A critic added: "Zack Snyder's ridiculously entertaining latest is a zombie heist movie with gore at its core."
Meanwhile, a viewer admitted the flick was "not great," yet conceded it was still "a lot of fun."
Despite a brief stint on the big screens for just one week in the States, owing to its digital debut on Netflix, 'Army of the Dead' astonishingly nabbed the Oscars Fan Favorite title at the 94th Academy Awards. The film also raked in a cool $1 million at the box office during its fleeting theatre showcase.
A pundit's take on the movie read: "Army of the Dead is a thrilling cinematic experience that brilliantly blends action, horror, and a touch of dark humor. The movie's intense pace keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, with each scene carefully crafted to deliver maximum impact.
"David Bautista's performance is nothing short of extraordinary; he brings a deep, emotional complexity to his character that adds a surprising layer of depth to the film."
Starring an ensemble that includes former WWE superstar David Bautista, Omari Hardwick, and 'Yellowjackets' star Ella Purnell alongside Theo Rossi among others, the film did however miss one initial member of its crew – Chris D'Elia, who was digitally excised following multiple sexual misconduct claims against him.
The acting chops of the cast have been lauded by scores of fans, but not everyone was as impressed. Someone critiqued: "The worst roster of characters I've seen in a zombie movie, and probably the worst writing."
One viewer wrote: "Great zombie flick; the opening sequence alone was top-tier, over-the-top entertainment. The movie was flashy, had a great cast, and had a great story. So many questions that I just can't wait for them to be answered."
They added: "Lots of crazy things you will spot after re-watching multiple times. Zack set a good foundation for a hopeful franchise to take off".
If you're in the mood for an action-packed, no-brainer zombie film, then Netflix's Army of the Dead is up for grabs right now on the streaming service.

Meghan won't take orders from anyone – that's why her brand's in chaos & it's all her own fault, expert slams
ROYAL experts have slammed Meghan Markle, claiming her inability to take orders is behind the chaos surrounding her brand. The Duchess of Sussex's brand, As ever, is taking a short break after selling out all its items in just 45 minutes, according to Meghan. The Sun's former Royal Correspondent and author Charles Rae said: "I'm not a businessman, but I would have thought that if you were setting up a new company, you would have enough products on the shelves or whatever is kept to satisfy the demand." Shoppers snapped up £10 jam and £22 honey from Meghan's brand — though it's unclear how many sold before the products were declared out of stock. Royal experts believe that the lack of clarity from the brand stems from the Duchess "not wanting to take orders from anyone". Will Ferrell ‘excited' to bring Eurovision musical to Broadway
Will Ferrell has said he is 'excited' to bring a musical version of the Eurovision Song Contest to Broadway. The American actor, 57, is basing the project on his Netflix movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga, which he starred in opposite Canadian actress Rachel McAdams and British actor Dan Stevens. 'We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway,' said Ferrell. 'The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.' Ferrell starred opposite Canadian actress Rachel McAdams, pictured, in the Netflix movie (Ian West/PA) The production will feature a book by Ferrell, Harper Steele, who both co-wrote the original film and were in the documentary Will & Harper together, and Anthony King, a TV and Broadway writer. Music will come from Savan Kotecha, who was behind the songs for the Netflix movie, and will be directed by Alex Timbers. 'Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes,' Timbers, a Tony award-winning director, said. 'And when I first saw their joyful movie Eurovision during the pandemic, it buoyed spirits during a very dark time. 'With this stage adaptation, I can't wait to bring that same mix of heart, spectacle, irreverence, and awe to audiences across the world.' In the 2020 movie, The Notebook actress McAdams, an Oscar nominee, and Elf star Ferrell play Icelandic musicians Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir who are competing at Eurovision. JJ from Austria won Eurovision 2025 (AP Photo/Denes Erdos) It was nominated for a best original song Academy Award for Husavik (My Hometown) written by Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus, and Rickard Goransson. Eurovision director Martin Green, from the organising group, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), said: 'This is a stellar team for what I am sure will be an equally stellar adaption of a film the world loved. 'Our aim always is to bring the joy of the Eurovision Song Contest to more people globally – especially as we approach our 70th edition in 2026.' Last month, the 2025 winner of Eurovision was crowned as 24-year-old opera singer JJ from Austria, who entered with the dramatic Wasted Love. Netflix has previously turned its popular science fiction show Stranger Things into a play in the West End called Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which serves as a prequel to the series.
