This Morning host has show dropped after one series despite star-studded line-up
Dermot O'Leary, known for hosting This Morning, has been handed a crushing disappointment following news that his UKTV gameshow Silence Is Golden has been axed after just one series.
The ITV star, who recently praised his wife in a sweet post, fronted the four-episode programme where studio audiences were challenged to stay silent despite various temptations in order to secure their share of a whopping £250,000 jackpot.
Comedians such as Katherine Ryan and Seann Walsh tried their best to crack up the participants, with every noise made causing the cash prize to plummet.
When the entertainers managed to reduce the prize fund to nothing, the entire sum went to charitable causes.
During the Edinburgh TV Festival, UKTV bosses confirmed the programme wouldn't be returning for another run, reports the Express.
"At the moment, landing shows at that budget and scale that's not where our heads are at. We are really looking to try and do something different so we can bring it back in volume," they said.
The programme launched with considerable excitement in July 2024, arriving just months after Dermot was overlooked by ITV when Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard were chosen as the permanent replacements for Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning.
Dermot currently works as a part-time host on the programme, teaming up with Alison Hammond for Friday shows and stepping in for numerous episodes whilst Ben Shephard took his summer holiday.
Following the announcement of Silence Is Golden, Dermot told The Sun, "When a show like this falls into your lap, you can't believe your luck. I'm looking forward to having lots of fun."
The programme also had another ITV link, being produced by occasional Good Morning Britain host Richard Bacon.
He described the show to the press as: "The feeling when you're not allowed to laugh at a funeral? It's that - the game show."
But Dermot's show isn't the only one facing the chop from UKTV. The broadcaster has also axed Jimmy Carr's Battle in the Box.
The concept involved two celebrity teams competing in various physical and mental challenges, with their boxes expanding or shrinking based on their performance.
Reports in March suggested it was unlikely to return, a fact confirmed at the festival.
An insider revealed to The Sun Online earlier this year: "Battle in the Box is being rested and no more series are planned for now.
"The show was one of the schedule staples for UKTV last year as they relaunched their channels with a bold new look. While there's no conversations happening about a second series, the show could return sometime in the future."

Emmerdale star Lisa Riley 'in talks' to join I'm A Celebrity 2025 line up
Lisa Riley's name is being dropped into the mix as one of the possible contenders for this year's series of I'm A Celebrity. A soap star traditionally takes part in the show every year Emmerdale favourite Lisa Riley is being lined up to swap the Dales for the Australian jungle later this year, with reports suggesting she is in advanced talks to take part in the next series of I'm A Celebrity. Riley, 49, is best known for playing Mandy Dingle in the ITV soap, which is a role that she first took on in 1995. Over the last three decades she has been at the heart of some of Emmerdale 's most dramatic storylines and won the hearts of viewers. While she left the soap in 2001 to pursue other projects including Fat Friends, Waterloo Road, and Loose Women, she made a triumphant return to Emmerdale in 2019. Now, producers of I'm A Celebrity are said to be eyeing her up as one of the first names for the 2025 series. A TV insider told The Sun: "Lisa is the perfect celebrity for the show because not only is she from a soap watched by millions she's one of its biggest characters and it's an ITV show to boot. "She also has a naughty, mischievous sense of humour which is guaranteed to get a big response from her other celebrity campmates during their time in the jungle. Lisa is by no means the first star from Emmerdale to have gone on I'm a Celebrity and those that do always tend to get a great response from viewers at home." So far, eight Emmerdale stars have entered the jungle since the show launched in 2002, including Lucy Pargeter, Adam Thomas and Gemma Atkinson. Former cast member Danny Miller even went on to win the show in 2021. Riley herself has expressed an interest in taking part in the reality show for a while now. Her potential signing would follow the tradition of soap stars taking part in the ITV jungle hit. Coronation Street actors have been regulars on the series alongside Emmerdale alumni. Antony Cotton competed in 2011, while Helen Flanagan became infamous in 2012 for being voted to face seven consecutive Bushtucker Trials. Most recently, Jennie McAlpine (Fiz Dobbs) entered the jungle in 2017. BBC shares major update on Doctor Who future amid hiatus
Doctor Who will return with or without the extra funding from Disney, the BBC has now confirmed whilst the series is on hiatus following the departure of Ncuti Gatwa Doctor Who will return with or without the extra funding from Disney, BBC bosses confirmed yesterday. The sci-fi show is currently on a hiatus following the end of the two-year deal with Disney, which culminated with the departure of Ncuti Gatwa in the title role. Crushing rumours that the show would not return if Disney's huge cash injection did not return, the BBC's new head of content Kate Phillips said: "Rest assured Doctor Who is going nowhere. Disney has been a great partnership and it continues with The War Between The Land And The Sea next year." Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival Kate, who is just two months into her job, stressed: 'With or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC." The uncertainty around the series has been caused by Disney's continuing reluctance to commit to either renewing its funding deal with the BBC - or pull out. But show creator Russell T Davies has indicated he's already working on scripts for the next series, and also for another one after that. Later in the session, the BBC's drama controller Lindsay Salt said she had 'no update' in terms of timings " on Doctor Who but said that information would be made public as soon as it was possible. Agreeing with Kate, she said the BBC commitment to Doctor Who as one of its biggest brands was water-tight, adding that the show was "hugely important to us"." Now Doctor Who fans have the spin-off show, The War Between the Land and the Sea, which expected to start around Christmas. Disney reportedly injected around £100million into Doctor Who, which gave a a significant boost to the show's production budget, allowing for CGI use of dinosaurs and other stunts. There is still a chance that the deal will be renewed, or that BBC Studios will find another partner to join forces with. In the session about the BBC, Kate also said the corporation 'acted fast' after misconduct allegations against former MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace. And she urged anyone who felt they had grievances to air against top talent to come forward, stressing that they would be taken seriously. 'No one is irreplaceable,' she said. On MasterChef, she said she'd acted on the information she'd had in 2019. 'So there were two complaints. I dealt with them. I acted on them fast. I think I acted responsibly. I left him in no doubt of the expected behaviour that we expect at the BBC, if you like. I stand by the actions I took at the time with the knowledge that I had. Other allegations didn't come to us until much later, sort of at the end of 2023, and at that point we did act, and we acted fast.' Wallace was dropped from the series after multiple claims of inappropriate language and behaviour against him were upheld. Later his co-host John Torode was also dismissed after a complaint over his 'racist language' was upheld.
