AFC President Commends Record Number of Bids for 2031 Asian Cup
According to Bahrain News Agency, the AFC issued a call on November 27, 2024, to all member national associations to express their interest in hosting the upcoming edition of the continental tournament, with the deadline set for March 31. The AFC received official responses from several associations: the Football Federation Australia, the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the Korea Football Association (KFA), the Kuwait Football Association, the UAE Football Association (UAEFA), and a joint bid from the Football Federation of the Kyrgyz Republic (KFU), the Tajikistan Football Federation (TFF), and the Uzbekistan Football Association (UFA).
Shaikh Salman emphasized that the AFC Asian Cup is one of the AFC's greatest success stories. The recent edition hosted by Qatar further solidified the tournament's status as one of the best continental competitions in the world. The record number of hosting bids reflects the tournament's increasing prestige and appeal. The 18th edition hosted by Qatar set record numbers in attendance and digital engagement, with 7.9 billion impressions, reaching a global audience across more than 60 broadcasters in over 160 countries and regions.
With Saudi Arabia confirmed as the host for the next edition in 2027, the country that will host the 2031 edition is expected to build on this legacy and enhance the status of the continental tournament. Shaikh Salman underscored that hosting the tournament brings tangible and intangible benefits, including infrastructure development, strengthening community bonds, gaining organizational experience, improving the technical level of the game, and establishing the host country as a global sports hub.
In the next phase, the AFC will work with the national associations that have submitted hosting bids to complete the required documents according to the approved timeline, with a workshop dedicated to the bidding process scheduled for later this April. Subsequently, the AFC administration will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the submitted bids, ahead of selecting the host country for the tournament, which will feature 24 national teams, through a vote by the General Assembly in 2026.
During the meeting, the Executive Committee approved the decisions of all the standing committees, including the AFC Asian Cup Organising Committee, the Finance Committee, the Competitions Committee, and the Professional Football Committee.

The Royal Team also held a training session following the vet checks. The administrative team of the Royal Endurance Team showed remarkable professionalism in ensuring Bahrain's participation. Originally, the team had planned to race in France, but unsuitable weather conditions led to a last-minute change. Within just 72 hours, the management team managed to secure entry into the Rashford event, arrange logistics, and transport the horses to the UK. The Royal Team now looks ahead to a strong performance in one of the sport's most prestigious international competitions.

Playing at Do'stlik Stadium, the Bahrainis struggled from the outset against an organised and clinical Uzbek side that exploited defensive gaps and maintained control throughout the match. Uzbekistan's attacking depth and physical advantage overwhelmed Bahrain, who failed to register a meaningful attempt on goal. This was Bahrain's first appearance in AFC U20 Women's qualification — a historic step for the programme. However, their preparations were disrupted by travel issues en route to Uzbekistan. The side arrived only a day before kickoff and appeared off-rhythm in their continental debut. Led by head coach Khalid Al Harban, Bahrain are competing in Group G alongside Jordan, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Uzbekistan. Only the group winners and three best runners-up from the eight qualifying groups will advance to the final tournament in Thailand next April. Bahrain now face Jordan on Friday at 3:30pm (Bahrain time), followed by their final group match against the Northern Mariana Islands on Sunday at the same time. Both matches will also take place in Tashkent.

The initiative, started by the General Sports Authority in cooperation with several sports federations, aims to boost youth sports competitions and enhance their technical, administrative, and media standards. HH Shaikh Khalid made these remarks while receiving the champions of the Khalid bin Hamad Golden Generation League and Cup for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons, along with players who won individual awards. The event was attended by several high-ranking officials and club presidents. During the meeting, Shaikh Khalid expressed pride in the players' high skill levels and strong competitive spirit. He emphasized that the Golden Generation League is a strategic initiative designed to discover young sports talents and develop their abilities, building a solid foundation to represent Bahrain's national teams in the future. 'We focus on creating a competitive environment that shapes a qualified generation with strong sports values and discipline, capable of competing at regional and international levels,' Shaikh Khalid said.
