Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday said the government envisions the BIMSTEC Maritime Transport Pact as a blueprint to transform the Bay of Bengal into a global trade and tourism hub.According to an official statement, the Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) minister also said that joint feasibility studies of port-linked industrial zones will be launched soon.Sonowal inaugurated the second edition of the BIMSTEC Ports Conclave on Monday in Vishakhapatnam."The BIMSTEC Ports Conclave stands as a springboard to unlock the immense potential of the Blue Economy from the Bay of Bengal region," the statement said.According to the statement, the meeting aims to operationalise the recently signed BIMSTEC Agreement on Maritime Transport Cooperation (AMTC), facilitate dialogue on port-led development, and foster deeper integration in maritime trade, logistics, cruise tourism, and skill development.The minister called for the speedy ratification of AMTC and its implementation.Sonowal announced that a BIMSTEC Sustainable Maritime Transport Centre is going to be established under the Indian Ocean Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Maritime Transport (IOCE-SMarT) at the Maritime Training Institute in Powai, Mumbai.Speaking about the Kaladan project, which is being discussed at the event, Sonowal said, "The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project stands as a transformative gateway, connecting India's Northeast to the Bay of Bengal, dramatically reducing transit time and trade costs while unlocking new economic opportunities for the region".The event is being attended by policymakers, officials, maritime experts, port authorities, private sector stakeholders, and academic scholars from all seven BIMSTEC nations -- Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. He was stopped at the border in Houlton, Maine. The matter surfaced after the man, identified as Christopher Landry, was returning after visiting his family in New Brunswick from New who has lived in the U.S. since he was three, lives in New Hampshire with his partner and children and has a job here. According to media reports, he was stopped by officials at the border in Houlton, Maine, because of convictions in 2004 and 2007 for possession of marijuana and driving with a suspended license, and he was subject to that time, he received a suspended sentence and settled the fine. "Every little detail has been put on hold, from my dog's veterinary appointments to taking my kids to the doctor's appointments and paying bills … my life has been disrupted," he said. Born in New Brunswick, Landry moved to Peterborough, N.H., 43 years ago, when he was three. 'I was absolutely shocked,' said Landry, who works in manufacturing and has a green card. I've crossed the same port of entry since 2007, with no issues at all, he said.'It's terrible. Everything in my life is essentially put on hold. My primary concern right now is, how is my family going to survive at home without me?' he said that he backed Trump before he was elected but now says he feels misled. He said that he's critical of U.S. President Donald Trump's scrutiny of the border between Canada and the U.S."In the United States … it doesn't matter if you're a better person now, 20 years later, they're going to hold it against you," Landry said, according to CBC News. "If I had known that he was going to do this to hundreds, if not thousands of people across America, whether they deserve it or not, like, I don't know if I would have supported that," he further stated."As far as supporting this administration, it definitely has changed my views. I think it's gone too far," he continued. Landry is currently finding ways to getting clear of the old charges so he can return home.'I'm hopeful that we can get this cleaned up and I can go home and resume my life,' he said. He also stated that he never pursued citizenship because he is a third-generation green card holder , but now intends to apply if he is allowed back into the U.S.

Exclude agriculture from India-US trade deal: Farm bodies
Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Farmers body Indian Coordination Committee of Farmers Movements (ICCFM) Tuesday urged the government not to include any aspects of agriculture including dairy in the proposed bilateral trade agreement between India and the US as it would have implications on these a communication to commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, it said the Indian government must stop any trade deal with the US that Is detrimental to farmers' interests.'We urgently request that you exclude all aspects of agriculture from this trade deal to protect the interests of Indian farmers, ensuring our food sovereignty and security, and safeguarding the vitality of our rural economy ,' it said as the potential consequences of a trade agreement that grants duty-free access to the US agricultural products are 'deeply alarming'.It said that in agriculture, the US has a 'significant surplus that they may seek to offload onto markets like India'.Noting that the US is world's largest agricultural subsidizers, with the 2024 Farm Bill allocating a staggering $1.5 trillion, it said: 'Allowing such heavily subsidized US imports into India would undermine our longstanding position at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against these very subsidies'Moreover, import of any such transgenic products into India, be it corn, soy, canola, cotton, or apples, are 'unacceptable to us due to concerns about biosafety, especially regarding herbicide-tolerant and glyphosate-tolerant crops'.'We urge you not to proceed with any trade deal with the USA that involves agriculture and threatens our farm livelihoods, specifically requesting that you refrain from signing any Free Trade Agreement in this sector,' it week, the Bhartiya Kisan Union said If Indian markets are opened for capitalism and big corporate based agriculture system like America, 'then the farmers of the country will be forced to kneel before big corporate companies, also this step is a direct attack on the objective of self-reliant India'.'Any international agreement without consulting Indian farmers and livestock farmers will be a double blow to the rural class which is already doing loss making farming, because America provides more subsidy to its farmers than India, which would be far-fetched to even imagine,' it said.'The farmer of India will be reduced to a laborer on his own land. To protect the farmers and livestock farmers of the country, the protectionist policy should be given priority by the government,' BKU had said.
