EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Reuters) -Borussia Dortmund are embracing the underdog role in their Club World Cup quarter-final against Real Madrid, coach Niko Kovac said on Friday, as the Bundesliga side aim to avenge their Champions League final defeat a year ago.
Dortmund are riding high on an 11-match unbeaten streak but face tough odds against the LaLiga team under scorching heat in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday, where Kovac expects a packed house with a tough crowd.
The players "know exactly what does it mean to play against Real Madrid tomorrow", he told reporters at MetLife Stadium.
"We're expecting a lot of supporters, especially for Real Madrid. We're here as an underdog but we also want to show our best face and hopefully - this is what we are believing - we can pass to the next round."
Real Madrid are unbeaten against Dortmund in their last six meetings, having won their last four, including their 2-0 win in the Champions League final last year.
The German team hope they can flip the odds after entering something of a revival since Kovac took the helm in February. The Croatian manager said his team are operating at the "highest level" of confidence against Real Madrid.
"We need high self-confidence when we face Real Madrid," he said.
"We finished the season fourth (in the Bundesliga season), but it was a photo finish, and we had tough games to play.
"We played big opponents, and the players, they showed they are able to compete with all of them. So I think this is a big reason for me to believe in my players - they know exactly what is necessary tomorrow to be on highest level."

Al Hilal showed Saudi league not just about money, says Koulibaly

ORLANDO: Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal bowed out of the Club World Cup on Friday, after a 2-1 defeat to Fluminense, but after an unexpected run to the last eight they have left their mark on the global stage. Simone Inzaghi's team beat Manchester City 4-3 in the round-of-16, delivering the biggest upset of the tournament and one of the competition's most thrilling games. Al Hilal began their campaign with a draw against Spanish giants Real Madrid and they came through the group stage unbeaten with a draw against Champions League regulars Salzburg and a 2-0 win over six-times CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Pachuca of Mexico. With a squad that mixes local Saudi talent with international recruits, the newly appointed Inzaghi was able to take the team to the brink of the last four. For former Napoli defender and Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly, one of the expensively recruited foreign players, the performances at the first 32-team Club World Cup, were a message that the Saudi league is not just a lucrative retirement home for European and South American players. "We showed that the teams from Saudi are very strong, very powerful and we have a lot of good players. Everyone thinks that when we went there we only went for the financial argument but we showed that we are working over there," he told reporters. "We showed it at this World Cup and every team who played against us can see that we have talent. We want to improve the league, we have improved a lot in two years," he added. Koulibaly was one of the early recruits to the Saudi Pro League, after leaving Premier League team Chelsea to join the Riyadh club and he said he has witnessed rapid growth in the league. "I was there at the beginning and I see today it is very tough. We saw it last year and next year it will be tougher as more players are coming. The Saudi league is taking a nice place in the football world and we are happy because we are part of a very nice project and want to show all the world that the football is improving," he said. Inzaghi, who left Inter Milan and took charge of the team shortly before the tournament began, says he has been impressed with what he has seen from his players so far. "Clearly, for me and my staff, it was very important to be able to play in this World Cup. We realised what kind of team we have, the quality of our players, the pleasure with which they work every day. Now we are looking forward to a great season," he said. --AFP

Brazil starlet Estevao 'ready' for Chelsea move: Palmeiras coach

PHILADELPHIA: Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira said he believes teenage prodigy Estevao Willian is ready to take the leap to the Premier League after he marked his farewell appearance for the Brazilian club with a goal against future employers Chelsea on Friday. Estevao, 18, scored a fantastic equaliser in the Club World Cup quarter-final between the teams in Philadelphia but could not prevent Chelsea claiming a 2-1 win thanks to a late own-goal. He will now complete a move to the London club, finally heading to England just over a year after Chelsea agreed to pay Palmeiras a reported 57 million euros ($67.1m), including bonuses, for him. "I don't have sons, I have two daughters, but he is my son," Ferreira said after the match at Lincoln Financial Field, adding that he had exchanged words with Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca about Estevao. "I spoke before with Maresca. He is a nice coach, and I told him that they bought an amazing player but more than this they bought an amazing person. "He is an amazing player and I said that they need to take care of him and embrace him because for sure in the beginning he will make mistakes, but you saw today that he is a player with a lot of skills who can win a game on his own. He has that capacity." Estevao was named the best player in the Brazilian league last year and has shown plenty of glimpses of his potential at the Club World Cup. Now he must try to win a place in the Chelsea team in the face of stiff competition, with Maresca having a wide array of attacking options at his disposal. "For sure he will need the support of the coach and directors because he is young and it is the first time he is leaving his country," Ferreira added. "I told him it won't be the same because the sun comes out two or three times a year, the night comes early, but I believe Chelsea have all the conditions to support him. "He is a fantastic player and I think he is ready." Ferreira, the Portuguese coach who has been in charge of Palmeiras since 2020, earlier hugged Estevao in front of reporters, with the player smiling despite the disappointment of his team's exit. Maresca said: "I spoke to Estevao for the first time after the game and told him it was the perfect night because we won and he scored. "You can see he is a huge talent, a fantastic player, and the only thing for me is that when you come from South America or in general another part of the world to Europe, you need to adapt. "So we need to help him to adapt and first of all to be happy, continue to enjoy football, but we don't have any doubt because he is such a good player that he is going to be a very important player for Chelsea." Another future Chelsea player, Jamie Gittens, was in attendance in Philadelphia with the England Under-21 international winger joining from Borussia Dortmund. "Jamie was here tonight and was on the pitch and will be with us for probably another day or two," Maresca said.

Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund renew rivalry in CWC quarterfinals

BIG clubs meeting in big matches. That's the recent history for Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, who continue their rivalry in a Club World Cup quarterfinal on Saturday at East Rutherford, N.J. Real Madrid recorded a 5-2 win over Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League in October 2024, four months after they defeated the German side 2-0 in the final of 2023-24 Champions League. Add in that Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso knows Dortmund very well after coaching their Bundesliga rival Bayern Leverkusen from October 2022 until the end of last season, and the match has extra spice. 'We know (Alonso) very well. He worked 2 1/2 years in Germany, and he did a fantastic job,' Dortmund coach Niko Kovac said. 'Now he's implementing everything he had at Bayern Leverkusen at Real Madrid. So, we're expecting the same of what we had in Leverkusen, only with different players. 'We're looking forward to it, but you have to play football for 90 minutes, and if we put everything on to the pitch, I think that we will have a good chance.' The winner plays in a semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in East Rutherford on Wednesday. Real Madrid will look to Kylian Mbappe, who made his tournament debut vs. Juventus in the Round of 16 after being out with an illness. Fortunately, Gonzalo Garcia was more than adequate as a replacement, netting three goals in the tournament. 'We feel good,' Alonso said. 'After getting past the group stage and Juventus, you want to keep taking steps, and the next one is a quarterfinal with Dortmund, a top team in Europe, one that is always competing in the Champions League and recently played in the final, of course against Madrid. 'It is going to be an intense match, one in which we need to play at a good level, and so we're up for it.' Real Madrid will have to keep an eye on Serhou Guirassy, who scored twice in 10 minutes vs. Monterrey in the previous match, giving him three goals in the tournament. What will be missing is a matchup of the Bellingham brothers -- Real Madrid midfielder Jude and Dortmund midfielder Jobe, who is suspended because of yellow-card accumulation after being cautioned vs. Monterrey. 'I think it will be a difficult match,' Jude Bellingham said. 'We have already played against them, but they have changed a little. ... They've improved. It'll be a very exciting match.'
