34th Servus Edmonton Marathon returns Sunday, major road closures downtown
Thousands of runners will take to the streets of Edmonton Sunday for the 34th Servus Marathon. The 42.2-kilometre course travels through downtown, the river valley and historic neighbourhoods, meaning there will be some major road closures during the event. The race's start and finish line will be on Jasper Avenue outside of the Edmonton Convention Centre. Closures downtown will begin at 6:45 a.m. and end by 4 p.m. at the following locations: total closure of Jasper Avenue between 95 Street and 124 Street – a single lane will be maintained on Jasper Avenue eastbound between 124 Street and 119 Street to allow for local access; two-way traffic on 100 Avenue will be in place to accommodate impacted residents. There will be no north/south crossing of Jasper Avenue anticipated between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.; single lane traffic in each direction on Jasper Avenue between 82 Street and 95 Street; single lane traffic in each direction on 82 Street between Jasper Avenue and 112 Avenue; total closure of 124 Street between Jasper Avenue and 102 Avenue; single lane traffic in each direction on 102 Avenue between 124 Street and 138 Street; and access to streets on the south side of 102 Avenue will be permitted as space between race participants allows. Impacts to downtown neighbourhoods east of the convention centre will start at 6:45 a.m. and end around 10:30 a.m. Impacts to downtown neighbourhoods west of the convention centre will start at 7:15 a.m. and end by 4 p.m. Residential streets in McCauley, Cromdale, Virginia Park, Bellevue, Highlands, Beverly Heights, Rundle Heights, Glenora, Crestwood and Parkview will be affected. Residents are asked not to park on the route and to follow directions from race marshals. Parking restrictions will be in effect along the race's route. Access to several parking facilities downtown will be impacted from Saturday at 6 a.m. to Sunday at 4 p.m.: Canada Place east and west parkades; Stanley A. Milner Library parkade; Sun Life parkade; KRP Tower; Diamond and Impark lots on 99 Street south of Jasper Avenue; Fairmont Hotel Macdonald; Double Tree by Hilton hotel; and surface lots along 101A Avenue between 96 Street and 97 Street. Several bus routes will also be impacted, with some detoured: Route 101 will be impacted between 5 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Routes 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 110X, 511, 701, 900X and 90 will be detoured between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Routes 2, 5, 11 and 900 X will have additional detours to accommodate setup of the marathon from 5 a.m. on Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday. Detours will also be in place during teardown on Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The City recommends taking the LRT when possible during the marathon. A full list of detours can be found at The Servus Edmonton Marathon is a 2026 Boston Marathon qualifier and also includes a 21K half-marathon, army 10K, 5K and 1K fun-run races. More than 8,500 people are registered to partake in the race – the most the marathon has ever seen. About 15,000 spectators are expected to cheer on racers. Registration is still open until Monday at midnight.

Major opportunities on the line as rugby sevens returns to Canada Games
A raucous hometown crowd popped as Erik Haas pushed his body past a pair of defenders, and collapsed beyond the try line in the dying seconds of the game to give his team a win over Nova Scotia. The 19-year-old stayed on the ground as his teammates surrounded him, celebrating what was about to become their first win at the 2025 Canada Games. "I was huffing and puffing the whole way down the field," he said with a smile. "We were close to the try line, so I just tried to rumble over there, and I managed to get it." Haas said impressing the hometown crowd is one of the biggest motivators in this tournament. But it's not the only one. There's also an audience of scouts looking for the next hidden gems that could shine on the international stage. Men's rugby hasn't been part of the Canada Games since 2009. Women's rugby sevens debuted in 2023, with the men's tournament making its return for 2025. Newfoundland and Labrador coach Darrell Devine — who also coaches with Rugby Canada — said the sport's return to the Canada Games is vital for the future of the national program. "I think it's huge," he said. "We need this as a stepping stone to that next level. Our national team is doing the best we can, but if we can push these young boys through that system and get a clear pathway, I think it will do wonders for us." Rugby sevens — a speedy variant of traditional rugby featuring seven players on each team — was introduced on the Olympic stage in 2016. Canada has won a pair of bronze medals on the women's side, but has failed to reach the podium on the men's side in three straight Olympics. Devine said the Canada Games can serve as the perfect venue for the best players from all over the country to show off their skills in one place. Rugby Canada staff will be building scouting reports and identifying players for future camps and tournaments. Jocelyn Barrieau, head coach of Canada's women's national team, said the impact of having rugby in the Canada Games could be monumental for the sport. "We are having best-on-best competition in a tournament style that will replicate the demands of a sevens tournament," she said in a Rugby Canada news release. "The pride with which each player represents their provinces will also trickle up and follow them as they remain proud to represent their country moving forward." Rugby sevens kicked off Monday for the men's and women's programs, and will wrap up with medal matches on Wednesday.

Halifax hosting Minor Box Lacrosse National Championships

(Jesse Thomas/CTV News) Halifax is hosting the 2025 Minor Box Lacrosse National Championships from Aug. 11 to 15. The championship consists of 32 teams from across the country who will compete in 114 games. 'We are incredibly excited to host the Minor Box Lacrosse National Championships in Halifax,' said Lacrosse Nova Scotia president Charlotte Henderson in a news release. 'This event will not only provide a fantastic opportunity to witness high-level lacrosse but will also showcase our vibrant city to visitors from across Canada. We're ready to welcome the athletes, their families, and lacrosse fans to Halifax.' Team Nova Scotia will host Team British Columbia, Team Alberta, Team Saskatchewan, Team Ontario, Team Quebec, Team New Brunswick, Team PEI, and First Nations Lacrosse.
