Alvin Kamara's walk-off touchdown run is the Saints Play of Day 49

USA Today21-07-2025
We're down to 49 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 regular season opener, which means this 49-yard walk-off touchdown run by Alvin Kamara is our pick for the Saints Play of the Day. Kamara had a big day against the New York Giants back in 2018, scoring three rushing touchdowns while gaining 181 yards from scrimmage. But he called game to hand the Giants a loss with a late touchdown run from halfway across the field. You can see it for yourself right here.
The Saints were guarding a tight 8-point lead with 2:16 left in regulation; they weren't in position to run out the clock just yet, and the Giants could rally back to tie it up and force overtime. But Kamara wasn't about to let that happen. He took the handoff at midfield, found a crease in the New York secondary thanks to some key blocking from fullback Zach Line and tight end Josh Hill, and was gone. Free safety Curtis Riley tried to stop him but took a stiff arm to the face for his trouble. Three more Giants closed in, but they were too late to keep Kamara from running into the end zone.
But he didn't stop there. Kamara kept running through the back of the end zone and into the MetLife Stadium tunnel with wide receiver Michael Thomas right beside him. The pair of playmakers descended into the arena, away from fans and the opposing team, sending a clear message: that's all, folks.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat San Francisco 6-5 Monday night for their third straight win on a night when Giants top pitching prospect Carson Wisenhunt made his major league debut. McCutchen's 10th homer this season and 329th of his career put the Pirates in front 6-4 in the seventh. Wisenhunt gave up a homer to the third batter he faced, NIck Gonzales, and three more runs in the second but then finished with three scoreless innings before departing after the fifth with the score tied 4-4. The 24-year-old left-hander gave up five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a two-run double then scored on Tommy Pham's single for a 4-1 lead in the second. The Giants came back with two runs in the bottom of the second and tied it game on Willy Adames' second RBI hit in the fourth. With Carson Whisenhunt called up, Giants send Sean Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento

To make room for left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt, who will start Monday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the San Francisco Giants had to make a series of roster moves. Sean Hjelle was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento to make room on the active roster and Carson Ragsdale — one of the trio of organizational pitching prospects named Carson — was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. The Ragsdale move comes as somewhat of a surprise given that he was ranked 25th on MLB Pipeline's list of Giants top prospects. The 27-year-old right-hander was added to the 40-man in November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. The Giants acquired him at the 2021 trade deadline in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies for reliever Sam Coonrod. Ragsdale stands 6-foot-8 and throws an impressive 12-6 curveball. This year he has a 5.37 ERA over 18 games (14 starts) with Sacramento, though he ran up a 7.50 ERA over four July starts. His best month came in June, where he compiled a 2.49 ERA over five turns in the rotation. More For You Giants' top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt will debut Monday Ostler: Giants' Buster Posey has been handed the exam, but does he know the answer? Monday's debut is an opportunity for Whisenhunt to stake a claim to an open rotation spot in the absence of Landen Roupp and Hayden Birdsong. Roupp, out with an inflamed right elbow since July 23, is expected to start throwing over the next few days. Birdsong, sent to Triple-A to find his control of the strike zone, allowed two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts and two walks over four innings with the River Cats in his first start on Sunday. 'It's all about performance, especially where we are right now,' manager Bob Melvin said. 'But if (Whisenhunt) performs well, that's going to be a spot — you'd think he'd embrace that, and that's kind of what he's digging for. There's an opportunity, and when you're in the minor leagues and there's an opportunity, you try to take advantage of it.' Briefly: Left-handed reliever Erik Miller, out with a left elbow sprain, is scheduled to throw a 30-pitch bullpen session Tuesday.
