Lord Mayor's balloon regatta cancelled for sixth year running due to 'adverse weather conditions'

The much-anticipated Lord Mayor's Hot Air Balloon Regatta has been cancelled for a sixth year in a row due to last-minute weather concerns. The event was earmarked for either May 11, July 20 and July 27 as part of the Lord Mayor's Show festivities. But wind direction and speed have been blamed for the cancellation of the regatta, which could have seen up to 60 balloons in the skies across the capital. The event was last held in 2019 when 46 hot air balloons launched from Battersea Park, Wandsworth. It was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic and then in 2022, 2023 and 2024 due to adverse conditions. A spokesman said: "We're all really gutted because yesterday it looked like it might happen. It's the British weather. It's such a pain. And everyone had put so much into it." It's the British weather... It's such a pain Depending on the direction of the wind, the balloons were set to pass over famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Westminster and Tower Bridge. Organisers are hoping the regatta can go ahead in 2026. The event, which sees Londoners wake up at the break of dawn to see the balloons fly over the capital, supports the Lord Mayor's Appeal and has raised more than £250,000 since 2015.

Heat continues through the weekend, with high fire danger in western Colorado

The heat continues for Colorado this weekend, and so does the mostly dry weather. As a result, the fire danger is incredibly high for the western half of the state, which is why a Red Flag Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. While a large portion of the state will be dry Saturday, there is a chance a few of us could see an isolated afternoon storm. The best chance for storms will be in the mountains and on the eastern plains. Some of the storms could turn severe in the far northeast corner. It is going to feel like summertime in Colorado with temperatures in the 90s both Saturday and Sunday. The current record for Sunday is 98 degrees, and there is a chance to tie it. The heat sticks around until Wednesday, when the ridge of high pressure that's kept Colorado hot breaks down some. Not only will temperatures drop into the 80s, we will also see rain showers with the return of monsoonal moisture. This will be a welcome sight after a couple of dry and hot days.

Wildfire burns through Athens suburb as residents told to evacuate

A wildfire burned through a northern suburb of the Greek capital Athens on Saturday, and some residents were ordered to evacuate, the country's fire service reported. Residents of Kryoneri, 12.5 miles northeast of Athens, received three SMS messages to evacuate to safe areas, fire service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyannis told reporters. Greek media have shown houses on fire. The spokesman said 'there have been reports of damage. We will take stock when the fires have been put out'. 'The real difficulties are ahead of us,' Mr Vathrakoyannis said, adding that Greece has asked for six firefighting planes from the European Union's civil protection mechanism. On site, 145 firefighters and 44 fire engines, 10 firefighting planes and seven helicopters are attempting to put out the fire, the origin of which is unknown. Four ambulances are treating at least five people, most of them elderly, for respiratory problems. Temperatures reaching, or exceeding, 38C, dry conditions and high winds are fanning the flames. Under such conditions wildfires 'expand very quickly and become dangerous. These conditions are expected to prevail over the coming days', Mr Vathrakoyannis said. The fire service is also dealing with three other major fires in the southwest on Greece's two largest islands, Crete in the south and Evia north of Athens, and also on the island of Kythera, northwest of Crete. At least 335 firefighters, 19 planes and 13 helicopters are involved, but can only operate in daylight. Fifty-two wildfires broke out across the country over the past 24 hours, the spokesman said. Wildfires, many of them destructive, have become a common occurrence in Greece in recent years. Several have broken out in the past month.
