In an effort to reduce change issues for passengers and bringand KSRTC under the online payment system, the corporations implemented UPI payment across all its buses. However, recently, there have been problems with the UPI payment system, causing frustration for passengers.Due to payment issues, bus conductors are facing significant difficulties. Network problems and server issues have left both passengers and conductors in confusion. While passengers attempt to pay online without cash, delays are caused by server problems. On the other hand, even after payment is made, conductors are struggling to issue tickets.A UPI payment is taking a minimum of 3 to 4 minutes to complete. This issue is especially prevalent on highways, and the online payment system is in poor shape in rural areas. As a result, passengers in these areas are facing delays, causing additional stress for travelers and conductors alike.Due to technical and network problems, UPI ticket purchases are decreasing daily in a few KSRTC buses. In long-distance buses, only about 20 passengers per trip are using UPI to buy tickets, which is a significant drop. There are increasing calls to resolve these technical issues. Despite the need to transfer a considerable amount of money, the payment transfer is often delayed, further adding to the frustration. In rural areas, as conductors are trying to issue tickets, buses often reach a new stage before the payment is confirmed. This delay leads to confusion and inconvenience for passengers. The solution to the round-up fee issue, where extra money was being collected from passengers, has been implemented, making it easier for passengers to pay the exact fare. This measure has helped resolve the change issue for conductors, but passengers are still opting for offline payments due to the UPI issues.A bus conductor said, 'Sometimes, the problem worsens due to bank server issues, particularly with non-nationalised banks, which can become congested. This creates additional problems for passengers who are left without cash in their pockets. In city limits, UPI payments are processed quickly, but in rural areas, there are still persistent issues. As an alternative, passengers can opt for cash payments to buy tickets.'According to Ramalinga Reddy, Minister of Transport, Ramanagara, the delay in UPI payment processing makes it difficult for conductors to issue tickets on time.A KSRTC bus conductor said, 'Initially, the system worked well, but recently, we've been facing issues. There have been cases where passengers had to make two separate payments to get a single ticket.' Chetan Kumar who takes the bus often said there have been instances where he had to make the payment twice for a single ticket.'

Gen Z travel trends: Solo, flexible, and digitally driven
Travel, the Gen Z Way: Solo, Digital & on their terms! Cleartrip, a Flipkart company and one of India's fastest-growing online travel technology platforms, has released new data insights from its latest report highlighting how Gen Z travellers are reshaping the Indian travel landscape. As per Cleartrip, India's Gen Z is travelling differently—and on their own terms. New insights reveal how this generation is reshaping the way Indians plan and experience travel. Driven by a digital-first mindset and a preference for independence, young travellers are embracing solo trips, smart payment choices, and flexible itineraries. 'Gen Z travellers are rewriting the rules of Travel. For them, travel is not just a break, but a lifestyle choice and a form of self-expression,' said a Cleartrip spokesperson. 'They're independent, digitally savvy, and far more willing to spend on personalised, comfortable experiences, often preferring solo or niche travel over traditional group itineraries.' According to a recent travel report, Gen Z is 7 percent more likely to travel solo compared to other age groups. Unlike traditional family holidays, these trips focus on individual preferences, favouring nature, adventure, and quiet escapes over packed sightseeing schedules. This shift in mindset is also seen in how they pay. UPI and debit cards are more common than credit cards among this group, with UPI transactions about 10 percent higher than in other age brackets. Over 10% of Gen Z travellers also prefer EMI-based payments, allowing them to access better travel experiences without waiting for a bigger budget. Convenience plays a role too. Meal-inclusive bookings are more popular with Gen Z, showing a growing preference for hassle-free travel options. Flexibility and value continue to guide choices. Gen Z is more likely to use flexible booking options and redeem reward points, including travel coupons and loyalty offers, more often than other generations. These trends point to a broader shift in Indian travel—where younger travellers are prioritising ease, value, and independence. For them, travel isn't just a holiday. It's a personal experience shaped by choice and convenience. One step to a healthier you—join Times Health+ Yoga and feel the change

Over Rs 11,994 cr worth free tickets issued as ‘Shakti' scheme turns 2
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government's ambitious 'Shakti' scheme, one of the five key guarantees announced by the ruling Congress party, has completed two successful years. Launched on June 11, the scheme has so far enabled over 474 crore women to travel free of cost on state-run buses across Karnataka. During this period, transport corporations have issued tickets worth Rs 11,994 crore, which the state government has committed to reimburse. Implemented immediately after the Congress came to power, the Shakti scheme was the first of the guarantee programmes to be rolled out. Transport officials say the scheme has received overwhelming public response, significantly increasing the number of women passengers. Interestingly, there has also been a rise in the number of male passengers, likely due to the improved accessibility and frequency of services prompted by the scheme. The program has drawn attention from other states as well. Officials from the Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation recently visited Karnataka to understand the operational framework, challenges, and execution model of the Shakti scheme. Between June 11, 2023 and June 10, 2025, over 474.82 crore women travelled for free across the four state-run bus corporations—Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC), and North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC). On average, 65 lakh women have used the scheme daily. During this two-year period, the government has issued tickets worth Rs11,994.37 crore to women passengers alone. This translates to an average of Rs16.5 crore worth of free tickets per day. These amounts are being reimbursed directly by the government to the respective corporations to ensure operational sustainability. As per data provided by KSRTC, the total number of passengers, including men, who used services of the four corporations during this time was 801.54 crore. Of the total female ridership, BMTC accounted for 150 crore passengers, followed by KSRTC with 144 crore, NWKRTC with 111 crore, and KKRTC with 68 crore. In terms of ticket value for women passengers, KSRTC topped the list with Rs4,556 crore, followed by NWKRTC at Rs2,968 crore, KKRTC at Rs2,408 crore, and BMTC at Rs2,061 crore. Although the government had announced that beneficiaries would be issued Shakti Smart Cards, these have not yet been distributed. As a result, women are currently using Aadhaar cards to avail the free travel benefit. The scheme has also had a positive impact on tourism, particularly to religious destinations, with transport corporations observing a surge in footfall to pilgrimage sites. However, the sharp rise in ridership has increased pressure on the existing fleet of buses, especially older ones. In response, the state government has announced the procurement of 4,000 new buses to manage the additional demand generated by the scheme.
