With the T20 World Cup 2026 in sight, England's new white-ball captain, Harry Brook, is in the hunt for players who can take on the world's best bowlers, and Bairstow believes he fits the bill.
"I am still contracted. I haven't heard too much from them, if anything, to be honest with you, but that's the part and parcel of it. Brooky (Harry Brook) came out and said that he wanted certain type of players who can take down the best bowlers in the world, and I definitely fit that mould and have done for a long period of time," Bairstow told Sky Sports.
"So, from a fitness point of view, I have not missed a game since coming back from my ankle injury, which could have been a lot more treacherous than it has been. I am really pleased to be spending a lot of time out on the field, even with the County Championship stuff and then going into the Hundred. From a robustness point of view, I am definitely knocking about. The other bits here, the leadership side of it, have thrown at different challenges," he concluded.
In the ongoing Vitality Blast Men 2025, Bairstow has hammered 177 runs in seven appearances for Yorkshire at 25.28 while striking impressively at 165.42. The seasoned star has enjoyed a more prolific run in the County Championship with Yorkshire, garnering 595 runs at 49.58 and hammering nine sixes, the most by a batter in the top 20 run-scorers.

Drama unfolded in the high-intensity Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Manchester on Sunday (July 27, 2025) after Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar refused England skipper Ben Stokes' offer to call off the fourth Test and settle for a draw before the start of the final hour of play. There is a provision that allows both captains to shake hands and agree to a draw if they feel that the possibility of a result is impossible. Having worked hard to earn a creditable draw, Jadeja and Washington, batting on 89 and 80 respectively, refused Stokes' offer after he had approached the umpire, which irked the England skipper no end. With both approaching their hundreds after having saved the match for India who started their second innings 311 runs in arrears, Jadeja and Washington exercised their rights to continue batting. India coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill backed the decision to carry on batting. "If someone is batting on 90 and the other one is batting on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would they have walked off if someone from England's side would have been batting on 90 or 85? "If someone has the opportunity to get his first Test hundred, won't you allow him to do it? They weathered the storm. It's up to them," Gambhir said at the post-match press conference. "If they want to play that way, that's up to them. I've got nothing more to say. I think both those guys deserved a hundred, and fortunately they got it." On his part, Gill said, "It was up to the boys and both of them were in their 90s, they deserved to score centuries." In the field of play earlier, Stokes had a few words to say as Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were also seen enquiring as to why India wanted to carry on. Rishabh Pant's foot injury during the fourth Test raised questions about whether teams should be allowed to have substitutes who can bat or bowl in case someone is unable to continue owing to some serious injury. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir isn't averse to the idea. 'I'm all for it. If the umpires and the match referee see and feel that there is a major injury, it's very important to have this rule where you can get a substitute,' Gambhir said after India managed a draw against England at Old Trafford on Sunday. Despite fracturing his foot and being advised six weeks' rest, Pant walked out to bat during India's first innings and went on to score a half-century. Gambhir, while lauding Pant's efforts, made it clear that a replacement rule is the need of the hour. 'If it (the injury) is very visible, there is nothing wrong in doing that (allowing a replacement). Especially when it's been such a closely fought series in the previous three Test matches. Imagine if you had to play with 10 men against 11. How unfortunate would that be for us!' Gambhir added. 'I don't believe that the team is in transition, because it's still an Indian team. 'It's only about experience and inexperience, and that is how we see this. But the most important thing is that these guys are going to learn a lot from what they did today, because being under pressure and then batting for five sessions is never easy, especially on a Day five wicket ,' Gambhir said, adding: 'We got to give it to the guys for the kind of character they have shown.'
