Frightening moment MLB star Keibert Ruiz is rushed to hospital after being struck in head by foul ball

Daily Mail24-06-2025
Washington Nationals star Keibert Ruiz was hit in the head by a lasered foul ball off the bat of teammate Josh Bell on Monday night, forcing him to leave the game and go to the hospital.
Ruiz was starting as the Nationals' catcher against the San Diego Padres on Monday night, helping not allow a run through three innings.
Then came Bell's fourth-inning at-bat against Stephen Kolek, who tossed a 91-mile-per-hour cutter into the bottom half of the strike zone. Bell only got a piece, sending the ball into his own dugout.
The Nationals' commentators knew immediately the pitch struck someone in the Washington dugout, with Ruiz appearing holding his head, just above his right eye and heading to the locker room in pain.
Ruiz exited the game to go to the hospital for a CT scan, with Nationals manager Dave Martinez not giving an immediate update on his catcher's condition.
'The ball hit him pretty solid on the side of the head,' Martinez said. 'We all ducked and when he went down, we kind of got scared a little bit. He had a nice lump on the side of his head. A little concerned right now. Hopefully, he comes out of it OK.'
Washington has yet to officially confirm Ruiz's status in the hours since Martinez's last media availability.
Per TalkNats, the team is expecting to be without Ruiz for at least a week after the unfortunate incident.
This is the second scary incident of its kind in an MLB dugout this month, with Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge taking line drive from the bat of Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman last week.
Bell ended up hitting a sacrifice fly during the at-bat where Ruiz was hit, helping extend Washington's lead.
The Nationals hung on for the 10-6 victory with Riley Adams taking Ruiz's place behind the plate.
Washington is not having a campaign to remember, sitting 14.5 games back of the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East.

Cubs calling up top prospect OF Owen Caissie

August 14 - Outfielder Owen Caissie, the No. 1 prospect in the Cubs' minor league system, is expected to join Chicago Thursday in Toronto. The Cubs were set to officially call up Caissie from Triple-A Iowa before the game in Toronto, but manager Craig Counsell told reporters he wasn't sure if Caissie would arrive in time to play. "I'd love to have him be in the lineup, but we're just gonna wait and see what his scheduled arrival time is," Counsell told reporters a bit more than two hours prior to game time. If Caissie doesn't arrive to Toronto in time to play, his first MLB chance would have to wait until Friday, when the Cubs open a three-game home series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. MLB Pipeline ranks Caissie as the No. 45 overall prospect in baseball. On the season, he is hitting .289 with 100 hits, 26 doubles, two triples, 22 home runs and 52 RBIs in 93 games. Caissie, 23, was selected in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. He is the highest-ranked Canadian outfielder ever drafted. With the 2020 minor league season canceled because of the pandemic, Caissie never played in the Padres organization. He was traded to the Cubs along with three other prospects and right-hander Zach Davies in the seven-player deal that sent right-hander Yu Davish and catcher Victor Caratini to the Padres in December 2020. If Caissie arrives in time for the game, he'll be playing in front of the home folks. He is from Burlington, Ont., about a 70-minute drive to Rogers Centre in Toronto. He is expected to take the roster spot of catcher Miguel Amaya, who was carted off the field with a sprained ankle in Chicago's 4-1 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. --Field Level Media

49ers place OL Andre Dillard (ankle) on injured reserve

August 14 - The San Francisco 49ers placed veteran offensive lineman Andre Dillard on season-ending injured reserve Thursday. The former first-round pick recently was activated from the physically unable to perform list, where he landed after undergoing offseason ankle surgery. Drafted 22nd overall by Philadelphia in 2019, Dillard has played in 69 career games (19 starts) for the Eagles (2019, 2021-22), Tennessee Titans (2023) and Green Bay Packers (2024). The 49ers also signed William Bradley-King and Demone Harris to one-year deals and waived fellow defensive lineman Michael Dwumfour. Bradley-King, 27, appeared in four games for Washington in 2021-22 after being drafted in the 2021 seventh round. Harris, 29, has played in 23 games (one start) with four teams since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He tallied 11 tackles in nine games with the Atlanta Falcons last season. Dwumfour, 27, has appeared in 13 games (one start) for the Houston Texans (2021-22), 49ers (2022) and Cleveland Browns (2024). --Field Level Media

LeBron James and ex-teammate Anthony Davis share same cryptic posts about 'goodbyes' amid rumored Lakers rift

LeBron James and former teammate Anthony Davis each posted the same cryptic statement on Instagram this week, further fueling rumors of a potential reunion in Dallas or elsewhere. 'Becoming the best version of yourself comes with a lot of goodbyes,' read the posts. Both clients of Klutch Sports' Rich Paul, James and Davis were teammates on the 2019-2020 Los Angeles Lakers team that won an NBA title in the league's COVID bubble. The two remained together in LA until last season, when Davis and others were sent to Dallas in exchange for Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic. Since then, James has picked up his $52.6 million option to remain with the Lakers in 2025-26. But just when it looked like 40-year-old was ready to make one last run at an NBA title alongside Doncic, Paul dropped the first in a series of subtle hints that James might be unhappy. 'LeBron wants to compete for a championship,' Paul told ESPN in June. 'He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. 'We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him.' Paul did not elaborate and it remains unclear what James' specific issue is with a Lakers youth movement centering around a 26-year-old Doncic, who has already reached one NBA Finals with the Mavericks. Suspicions about James' situation with the Lakers were further enflamed on July 31 when he showed himself working out in front of a Clippers logo. But it's the Mavs that may hold the most intrigue for James, due to the presence of Davis and another former teammate, Kyrie Irving, with whom he previously won a title in Cleveland. Dallas also boasts first-overall pick Cooper Flagg, considered by many to be a generational talent. James can be traded despite recently opting into the final year of his contract, although any deal would be difficult to put together given his salary and the NBA's cap rules. And any deal that could send James to Dallas would almost certainly need to involve another team. Besides, the Lakers did improve this offseason with the additions of gritty combo guard Marcus Smart and ex-Portland center Deandre Ayton, who was actually taken ahead of Doncic in the 2018 NBA Draft. The Lakers were 15-8 with both James and Doncic in the lineup together last season. Whether that's a foundation for 2025-26, or just a small chapter in James' illustrious carer, will likely be determined in the two months before he begins his 23rd season.
