Michael Vick shows Norfolk State coaches he still has the arm

Miami Herald05-07-2025
When the football season unfolds at Norfolk State University this fall, Michael Vick won't be taking any snaps at quarterback. But that's not stopping the former NFL All-Pro QB from showing the staff at Norfolk State that he still has an elite arm at 45 years old.
Vick posted to Instagram a throwing contest between himself and Demarcus McMillan, the Director of Football Operations for Norfolk State. The two were throwing at a football net set up with three unique targets at the back of the endzone. Throwing from roughly the ten-yard line, hitting the target made it a 20-yard challenge.
Stepping up in the 'pocket' Vick threw a perfect laser right into the upper right target of the net. A perfect strike. Vick seemed to offer McMillan the chance to hit any part of the net to stay alive in the game. As you can see in the Instagram video above, McMillan knew he was off target as soon as the ball left his hands.
McMillan, brings a unique blend of discipline and leadership to the Norfolk State program. A decorated military veteran with over 22 years of service, McMillan transitioned into athletics through youth football and operations roles.
Vick repeated his accuracy a second time zipping the ball through the same target once again.
This isn't the first time that McMillan has stepped on the field with some friendly competition amongst the staff.
Back in June McMillan lined up at defensive back to try and shut down boxing champion Terence Crawford with Michael Vick throwing passes. It didn't work.
On one route Crawford was jammed at the line, but broke free to catch a perfectly placed over-the-shoulder pass from Vick. Crawford also ran a quick slant to the outside that left McMillan tumbling across the field at Dick Price Stadium. But it was all in fun as the two laughed and slapped hands after each pass, as a small group of Norfolk State staffers laughed in the background.

Jake Paul to face lightweight boxing champion Gervonta Davis on Nov. 14

Jake Paul will face Gervonta "Tank" Davis in a boxing match on Nov. 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Netflix announced Wednesday. The bout is expected to be the biggest test to date for Paul, a social media star with 28 million followers on Instagram and 21 million followers on YouTube. Paul (12-1) became a professional boxer in January 2020 and has impressed despite limited experience in the ring. He has faced criticism for his competition, however. Most of his opponents have been nonboxers — a former NBA Slam Dunk champion in Nate Robinson, and MMA fighters like Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren and Mike Perry. He beat a 59-year-old Mike Tyson, and his lone loss came to boxer Tommy Fury, the half-brother of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Paul, 28, is coming off a unanimous decision against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June. Davis is without question Paul's most heralded opponent. The 30-year-old WBA lightweight champion is one of the sport's top talents, amassing a 30-0-1 record. Though he stands just 5-foot-5, Davis is known for his vicious punching power and has 28 knockouts in his career. He most recently retained his belt with a majority decision draw against Lamond Roach Jr. in March. Davis' boxing career was in jeopardy after he was arrested on July 11 in an alleged domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend. According to the Miami-Dade County Clerk's Office, a misdemeanor battery charge against Davis was dropped. Paul vs. Davis is the latest boxing match promoted by Netflix as it gets more involved in live sports. Paul's bout with Tyson last November, for example, peaked at 65 million streams, according to the streaming service. Netflix is also promoting Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 13, and has WWE Raw and multiple NFL games on Christmas Day. Not everyone in the boxing world is happy Paul vs. Davis is happening. Ryan Garcia, a former WBC interim lightweight champion who lost to Davis in 2023, wrote on social media that "boxing is officially the WWE … integrity of the sport is getting ruined every day."

Packers' $4M, 3-year starter predicted to be cut after refusing to return from injury

Packers' $4M, 3-year starter predicted to be cut after refusing to return from injury originally appeared on The Sporting News The Green Bay Packers have known since the start of the offseason that their wide receiver room was crowded, and they would eventually need to make some tough decisions. As the preseason winds down, it's becoming increasingly clear who may be the odd man out — and he might have seen it coming, based on a cryptic Instagram post he made some time ago. 'The post quickly caught the attention of football fans, many of whom saw it as a sign that something might be going on behind the scenes in Green Bay. While nothing has been confirmed, the image sparked speculation that Doubs may be frustrated with his role or future with the team,' Steelers Nation's Anthony G. Halkias II wrote. Romeo Doubs also suffered an injury during a recent practice — a back issue caused by a collision. 'Romeo Doubs is down. Small collision with Evan Williams on a deep incompletion and Doubs hit the ground. Very, very slow to get up. Appears to be his lower back,' reported Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. Between the injury and the social media post, signs are pointing to Doubs potentially being the receiver on the outside looking in. Speculation has intensified since he reportedly chose not to return to practice, even though he was capable of doing so. 'The Packers have had plenty of drama in the receiver room. But the issues between Doubs and the Packers go beyond Josh Jacobs demanding a No. 1 receiver during Super Bowl week. At this time one year ago, Doubs was part of a stable of promising pass-catchers, but heading into Saturday's game, he's one of the players on Green Bay's chopping block,' wrote Chris Schad of Dairyland Express. 'Doubs also admitted that he decided against returning from the injury in time for joint practices against the Indianapolis Colts last week, saying 'I made a decision and that's that,' according to John Miller of NBC 26 in Green Bay.' Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Doubs' choice not to return from injury, despite being able to, speaks volumes. It's an unfortunate situation for the young receiver, who has spent his entire NFL career in Green Bay. But with his recent actions and the current depth at the position, the organization may have no choice but to move on.

Does Caleb Downs think Nick Saban will return to coaching? What former Alabama football star said

Kristen Saban was adamant. Nick Saban, the Alabama football legend, is not returning to coaching. But that didn't stop someone from asking a former Crimson Tide player about the possible return of his former coach. Representing Ohio State at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas, safety Caleb Downs, who was a freshman All-American at Alabama in 2023, continues to praise Saban as someone he has "a lot of love and respect for." "I can see him coming back, but I haven't talked to him about it, so I can't really say whether he's going to do that or not," Downs told reporters in Las Vegas. "If he does, I'm sure he'll make a big impact on college football. But, I mean, that's going to be some news if he decides to do it." Kristen Saban posted a selfie on her Instagram story July 17 hours after sharing a video of her father leading the Crimson Tide onto the field. "Apparently some of y'all feel trolled by my last story of Nick's walkout," she wrote. "He's not coming back to coaching, hate to break it to you. You had your time." Nick Saban's rumored return was the talk of SEC media days sparked by a rumor by former Alabama quarterback and current college football analyst Greg McElroy who said "a very much in-the-know person" thinks "Nick Saban is not done coaching." "He's one of the greatest to ever do it," Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said at SEC media days. "So he's earned the right to do what he wants. I think the best part of what Coach Saban is doing right now is he's still involved in the game. He's growing the game." Nick Saban spent his first season of retirement as an analyst on ESPN's "College GameDay." Colin Gay covers Alabama football for The Tuscaloosa News, part of the USA TODAY Network.
