Lionel Messi exits Leagues Cup match with apparent leg injury
Lionel Messi exited Saturday night's Leagues Cup match against visiting Necaxa with an apparent leg injury in the 11th minute. Early signs suggest a potential hamstring strain.
The 38-year-old Messi's exit brings to a halt an exceptional run of clean health, the longest since he joined Miami in July 2023.
He had played in every minute of 16 consecutive matches for Miami between MLS regular season and FIFA Club World Cup play before his failure to appear in the 2025 MLS All-Star Game resulted in a one-match suspension against FC Cincinnati a week ago.
He returned Wednesday night for Miami's Leagues Cup opener against Atlas, in which he provided two assists -- one leading to the game-winner late -- in a 2-1 victory.
Almost immediately following Messi's exit Saturday, Telasco Segovia's goal put Miami in front. But the Herons were soon reduced to 10 men when Marcelo Weigandt was sent off for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, then conceded a 33rd-minute equalizer by Tomas Badaloni.

Messi's run of consecutive appearances was in stark contrast to his first two MLS seasons, on which he missed significant portions of regula-season play.
After playing all seven matches of Miami's run to the 2023 Leagues Cup title, minor ailments limited Messi to just six appearances among Miami's last 12 regular-season games that year.
He also dealt with multiple issues in 2024, the most pronounced being an extended recovery from a torn leg muscle sustained while playing for Argentina during the 2024 Copa America final that July.
He played in only 19 games in his first full MLS season but still scored 20 goals and had 16 assists while winning the league's 2024 MVP award.

With imminent success, McLaren must also deal with future disappointment
McLaren boss Zak Brown is preparing to deal with disappointment at the end of the Formula One season, even as the team enjoys one of its most dominant years and a 200th grand prix win at the weekend. As the title battle between Oscar Piastri and teammate Lando Norris heats up, the McLaren pair separated by just nine points after Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, the American conceded he was thinking also about how to handle the aftermath. Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen, the McLaren drivers' closest rival, is now 97 points off the pace and told reporters at the weekend that he may not win again this year given his car's issues. Even before the weekend, both Piastri and Norris cast caution aside and called it a two-horse race. One of them will surely end the year celebrating a dream come true. The other will rue what might have been, with a new engine era next season shaking everything up again and chances potentially disappearing. Losing always hurts, doubly so when it is to a teammate with the same car, and Brown said McLaren would have to deal with the situation sensitively when – although he still insisted on saying if – the time came. 'Eventually ... we'll just sit down and actually have a conversation and go, 'Right, one of you is going to win and it's going to be the best day of your life. One of you is going to lose. How do you want us to handle that?'' he told a select group of reporters. 'We'll actually sit down and go, 'Right, you want us to jump up and down and celebrate? This guy won'. So we're fully aware and sensitive to, 'How do you celebrate that situation?'' Australian Piastri has won six races to Norris's five but the Briton has momentum going into the August break, with three wins from his last four starts. The pair have had seven one-two finishes from 14 races, including the last four, and have left rivals trailing. McLaren is so far ahead in the constructors' standings – 299 points over Ferrari – that the crown is a given. Much has been made of the potential for a falling out between friends, for clashes on track given what is at stake, but Brown was sanguine and said the relationship was only growing stronger. When Norris ran into the back of Piastri as he challenged for the lead in Canada in June, the Briton defused the situation by immediately taking responsibility. Piastri locked up behind Norris in Hungary on Sunday, in what could have been a repeat of that Montreal accident, but no contact was made. Brown said there was no 'elephant in the room' at McLaren, with the drivers having complete transparency on strategy and how the team go about racing, and he expected more close calls in future. 'There's competitiveness brewing ... as the championship builds, I'm sure that tension will grow,' said the boss. 'We're fully anticipating them 'swapping paint' again at some point, I'm very confident it won't be deliberate, which is where you then get into the problems. 'They will have racing incidents in their further time here at McLaren, we know that and they know that, so we're not afraid of that. 'I'm positive they're never going to run each other off the track, and that's where you get into bad blood. So they're free to race ... there are rules around our racing, which is respect your teammate, they know that.'

(AP Photo/David Zalubowski) TORONTO — Toronto FC is close to acquiring attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids in a cash deal, according to a source. The transfer is not yet finalized, according to the source granted anonymity because they are not authorized to comment on the negotiations. TFC, without a designated player since buying out the contracts of Italians Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi in early July, has been looking for some star power. And Toronto, which sits 12th in the Eastern Conference at 5-13-6, needs help in attack. With 25 goals in 24 games, it ranks 26th in the league on offence. Canadian international Theo Corbeanu leads the team with five goals while Honduran Deybi Flores, a defensive-minded midfielder, tops the team with two assists. The 26-year-old Mihailovic has nine goals and seven assists in 24 regular-season outings for Colorado this season. He is making $1.775 million (all figures in U.S. dollars) with the Rapids this season, a bargain compared to the $15.4 million Toronto was paying Insigne and the $6.295 million Bernardeschi was earning. Toronto marks the fifth career team for Mihailovic and his second in Canada. He spent the 2021 and '22 seasons with CF Montreal, playing 61 regular-season games, including 57 starts. In 2021, he recorded 16 assists, erasing the previous club record of 13 set by Ignacio Piatti in 2018. Montreal had acquired Mihailovic from the Chicago Fire in exchange for $800,000 in general allocation money. Signed as a homegrown player from the Fire academy in January 2017, he played 73 regular-season games for the Fire, including 45 starts, with seven goals and 15 assists. After the 2022 MLS season, Mihailovic joined AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. He had two goals and two assists in 36 appearances across all competitions for the Dutch side before leaving to join Colorado in January 2024, signing on as a designated player on a four-year contract through 2027 with a club option through 2028.
