Hot dog spill in Pennsylvania shuts down highway

CBS News01-08-2025
A truckload of hot dogs spilled across a Pennsylvania interstate on Friday in York County after a crash that briefly clogged the heavily traveled artery in both directions.
Crews were stuck with a job they did not relish — rolling up the scattered tube steaks for disposal. CBS affiliate WHP reported that the truck was carrying a thousand pounds of frozen hot dogs when it crashed around 9:15 a.m. on Friday.
"Once those leave the truck and hit the road, that's all garbage, and it's still pretty warm," Shrewsbury Fire Company Chief Brad Dauberman said.
State police said the tractor-trailer had an unspecified mechanical problem on Interstate 83 a few miles north of the Maryland line, as morning rush hour was wrapping up, causing it to push into a passenger vehicle. When the truck scraped along a concrete divider, its trailer was ripped open and the contents scattered.
Four people required medical attention, Dauberman said, for injuries that police said were not life-threatening.
A front-end loader was used to scoop up the hot dogs and drop them into a dump truck.
Dauberman said emergency crews couldn't help but see the humor in the situation, and his daughter texted him a photo of a hot dog-themed T-shirt.
"I can tell you personally, hot dogs are very slippery," the fire chief said. "I did not know that."

Vishay Intertechnology Introduces Miniature, Sealed, Industrial-Grade Multi-Turn SMD Cermet Trimmers for Harsh Environments

Offered in Compact 4 mm x 4 mm Footprint, Space-Saving Devices Feature IP67 Sealing and High Temperature Operation to +140 °C MALVERN, Pa., Aug. 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today introduced a new series of industrial-grade, multi-turn, surface-mount cermet trimmers. Designed for space-constrained applications in harsh environments, the Vishay Sfernice TSM41 series devices combine a compact 4 mm by 4 mm footprint with a wide temperature range of -55 °C to +140 °C and IP67 sealing. Compared to previous-generation devices, the trimmers released today offer a 42 % smaller case size, allowing designers to save board space and optimize package density. In addition, the TSM41 series allows for fine-tuning of its wide 10 Ω to 1 MΩ resistance range, and a faster setting-to-time ratio than single-turn trimmers. Offering a 0.25 W power rating at +85 °C, the devices are available in both top and side adjustment styles, providing flexibility for various design requirements. The TSM41 series can be mounted directly to the PCB, allowing for automated PCB assembly and setting processes — enhancing production efficiency to save time and lower costs — while enabling the components to be placed on both sides of the board. Fully sealed to withstand standard board wash processing, the trimmers ensure reliability in welding equipment, power tools, smoke detectors, and heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. Samples and production quantities of the TSM41 series are available now, with lead times of 15 weeks. Rickie Fowler's Revival, Scottie's Streak, Fuels BMW Championship Buzz

The FedEx Cup Playoffs enter their second stanza with fifty golfers left battling it out at the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland. The stakes? A hefty $20 million purse with a cool $3.6 million payday for the leaderboard topper. The players fortunate enough to earn their place in the field have already locked in their spots for next year's elevated events, but now it's all about making the grade for the Tour Championship. Only the top 30 after this tournament is in the books will move on to the season-ender. Last week at the St. Jude Championship Rickie Fowler turned on the afterburners to go from 64th to inside the 50 on the strength of a T6 finish. He was one of just five players to claw their way back into the mix, while some big names slipped backward—Jordan Spieth dropped to 54th, Wyndham Clark to 56th, and Min Woo Lee fell to 57th. Fowler attributes his recently formidable form to rediscovering his swing and ball-striking mojo, which have driven his play to a level we haven't seen from him in quite some time. The crowd-pleasing Californian also credits a mental shift toward keeping 'things as simple as possible' for his late-season turnaround. 'Simple, as far as not trying to do too much or not trying to be too perfect, kind of taking what I have. I've been doing a good job of just managing my way around the golf course.' Eight-time tour winner Patrick Cantlay, 19th in the rankings, heads into his ninth BMW Championship hungry to put an uplifting coda on a season that's been less than stellar. While he's logged four top-10 finishes—on par with last year's tally—on the flipside he also missed the cut in three of the four majors. Still, the BMW is a tournament he's enjoyed past sucess in, having tasted victory in both 2021 and 2022. He also arrives riding a confidence boost after a top-ten finish in Memphis. 'I think I drove the ball in the fairway a little bit more last week on a golf course where it's really important to drive the ball in the fairway. It's a course I've played well at over the years. Just a comfortable place for me,' Cantlay said. Elusivity Tommy Fleetwood has been on the brink of ending his PGA Tour winless streak twice this season—first at the Travelers Championship in June, then again this past weekend. Both times, late Sunday struggles got the better of him, most recently a bogey on the 17th hole that cost him the lead and a spot in the playoff between J.J. Spaun and eventual winner Justin Rose. 'With every disappointment I truly know I'm closer and closer and even more determined than ever that I will get this done,' Fleetwood said on X. 'The support I've received is invaluable and hugely appreciated, we'll get there together.' With $7.5 million in earnings this season—good for 10th on Tour in official money—the bitter pill of coming so close goes down a little easier with that honey. Maybe his 163rd event will be the charm. Substitute Caddie Ted Scott, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler's club consigliere, who was absent during the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship due to a family matter, remains out of action. Scheffler tapped Brad Payne to fill-in Sunday and shot a 67 to finish T3 for his twelfth top-10 finish in a row. It looks like this week he'll be using the services of Chris Kirk's caddie Mike Cromie. Kirk finished 51st, just outside the cut line in the rankings, so wont' be at the event.

State College area restaurant temporarily closed after vehicle crashes into dining room

A State College area restaurant remains temporarily closed after a vehicle crashed into its dining room early Tuesday morning, causing the owners to joke that a new drive-thru doesn't seem like a good fit. Bonfire Old Fashioned BBQ, located about a mile from Nittany Mall, was forced to close its doors Tuesday after a car wrecked through the front of its brick building around 2 a.m. The College Township restaurant posted photos of the crash on its Facebook account, showing a dining room filled with knocked-over tables and chairs next to piles of bricks. The vehicle appeared to be in one piece. But the front-right wheel was missing, based on photos. No one was in the restaurant at the time of the crash, a co-owner told the Centre Daily Times. The driver also did not suffer serious injuries and is not under suspicion of operating the vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to State College police. 'They just lost control,' Lt. Ted Hubler told the CDT. 'The investigation is ongoing.' Andrea Murray, one of the co-owners, said the restaurant will remain closed until it receives approval to reopen from the food inspector, county code enforcement and others. So, for now, that means the restaurant remains closed for both takeout and dining in. No immediate timeline for reopening was available. But Murray said updates would be posted on their Facebook page, and they hoped to offer a tentative idea of their reopening later Tuesday. 'Right now, we're just worried about cleaning up,' Murray added. According to Murray, worried customers have been calling the business since 6 a.m. — and Murray has been dilligently answering the phone to respond to whatever questions she can. She said longtime customers have been stopping throughout the day to check on the business, and that's meant a lot. 'Everyone's been reaching out, and we all appreciate everyone asking if we're all right,' Murray said. 'Definitely makes it feel like Bonfire's a family. And I really appreciate my Bonfire family.' Updates to the status of Bonfire Old Fashioned BBQ (2609 E. College Ave.) can be found at Solve the daily Crossword
