Slain Minnesota lawmaker to lie in state before funeral
Hortman will become the first woman and one of 20 Minnesotans to lie in state in the Capitol rotunda prior to burial. Their golden retriever, Gilbert, who was euthanized due to gunshot wounds, will rest alongside them.
'She built bridges across the aisle and she kept her diverse caucus together to usher through some of the most consequential legislation in our state's history,' Rep. Kelly Morrison (D-Minn.) said of Hortman, as reported by The Associated Press.
Those interested in paying their respects to the three will be allowed in the state Capitol from noon to 5 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday with limited in-person space. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety will livestream the proceedings on its YouTube channel.
The Hortmans' death sparked concerns for lawmakers across the country as the gunman, Vance Boelter, had a list of multiple Democratic targets.
Boelter shot state Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his wife, Yvette, on June 14 and also visited the homes of state Sen. Ann Rest (D) and state Rep. Kristin Bahner (D), according to federal prosecutors.

Texas legislative push places focus on state of gerrymandering in North Carolina
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Efforts by Texas lawmakers to redraw congressional maps further in their favor has placed a renewed focus on gerrymandering, the drawing and redrawing of electoral districts to benefit a single party. The practice is not isolated to Texas. 'That's what we have in North Carolina,' said Bob Phillips with Common Cause NC, a group advocating for fair, nonpartisan maps. 'Most of the legislative, most of the congressional districts, we already know who's going to win because the way the lines are drawn, and actually that's the way it is in much of the country.' A power grab by NC Republicans becomes a referendum on democracy in the states Despite North Carolina being classified as a 'purple' state, gerrymandering by state Republicans gave the GOP a 10-4 control of congressional seats and only one seat short of a total supermajority in Raleigh. As Philips points out, it is a strategy that has been used by both parties. 'When the Democrats were in control, they never supported redistricting reform. When they lost control, then they are jumping all over it,' said Phillips. Democrats have tried multiple times in recent years to pass legislation that would allow voters to decide how districts are drawn, by lawmakers or a nonpartisan commission. One of the authors of the latest bills, Buncombe County State Rep. Lindsey Prather, acknowledged her party has a history of gerrymandering. 'I'm well aware of the fact that Democrats gerrymandered in the past here in North Carolina. They did. And there are Democrats that are gerrymandering in other states right now across the country,' said Prather. But she argued that it doesn't eliminate the need for new maps. No reelection campaign for Democratic after North Carolina GOP redrew U.S. House map 'We are a purple state, and our voters support nonpartisan state and our voters support nonpartisan, independent redistricting which is why this bill that we wrote would put it to the ballot,' Prather added. Outside the legislature, former N.C. Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr has taken legal action. He's asking the State Court of Appeals to order maps be fairly drawn, creating districts that are compact and connected, not based on voting patterns. 'If you don't have fair elections then democracy fails,' said Orr. It Is Orr's hope this renewed attention caused by the controversy in Texas will convince both the public and those in power that change is essential. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Jewish voters and the NYC mayoral race
CITY HALL, Manhattan (PIX11) — As the race for New York City mayor intensifies, one voting bloc is drawing particular attention: Jewish New Yorkers, who make up roughly 15% of the city's population. While far from a monolith, the diverse community is increasingly seen as a decisive force in what is shaping up to be a closely watched election. More Local News Traditionally, Jewish voters in the city have been courted by candidates across the political spectrum. But this year, with war in Gaza and questions about candidates' stances on Israel, there is a new intensity—particularly when it comes to Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani, a progressive lawmaker from Queens, has drawn both praise and controversy for his vocal opposition to Israel's military actions in Gaza, which he has called a 'genocide.' He has also defended past use by others of the phrase 'globalize the intifada'—language that has alarmed some Jewish voters, particularly in more Conservative and Orthodox communities. He has since said he would discourage the use of the phrase. But overall, Mamdani appears to be gaining traction among Jewish New Yorkers. A recent poll from Zenith Research found him leading the field among Jewish voters with 43% support. The poll showed particularly strong numbers among younger Jewish voters (67%), as well as reform and secular Jews (55%). Even among more conservative and Orthodox respondents, he registered 21% support. 'In a crowded field, Mamdani remains a double-digit favorite among Jewish New Yorkers,' said Adam Carlson, a founder of Zenith Research. 'I think that surprised a lot of people.' More News: NY Elections Mamdani has stressed that while his views on foreign policy differ from some in the Jewish community, he will remain primarily focused on the city's affordability crisis– the top concern for most voters across the belief spectrum. 'Affordability is far and away the number one issue,' Carlson said. 'The mayor has very little direct impact on foreign policy, and I think that's reflected in these generational gaps.' Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams—who is running for re-election as an independent on the 'End-Antisemitism' ballot line—is continuing to draw support from many in more religious communities– including top Jewish officials. Tuesday, Adams rallied at City Hall alongside prominent rabbis and other faith leaders. 'You have been behind the Jewish community from your heart,' one rabbi said. 'And in November, the Jewish community will be behind you.' Supporters of Adams cited his consistent backing of the Jewish community, before, during, and after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack in Israel. 'He's always been there to support us,' said another rabbi. 'And now it's our time to support this great mayor.' Despite stark differences in political alignment, many Jewish New Yorkers interviewed emphasized a shared desire for peace and unity, regardless of who they plan to vote for. 'We do not want war,' said one Rabbi. 'Any death is horrific—whether you're Palestinian, Israeli, Jewish, or Arab. It makes no difference. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Sen. John Cornyn urges FBI to help locate Texas Democrats who fled state to stall redistricting effort
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) asked the FBI Tuesday for help locating, arresting and investigating dozens of Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled the Lone Star State in an effort to stall a Republican-led redistricting effort. Cornyn, who is facing a primary challenge for his Senate seat from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, made the request in a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, where he described the 57 absentee Democrats – some of whom appear to be holed up in Illinois and New York – as 'potential lawbreakers.' 3 Cornyn noted that several of the absent Democrats appear to be hiding in other states, including Illinois and New York. AP 'Since these state legislators are currently outside of Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety may need support to arrest the fleeing lawmakers,' the senator wrote. 'I request the FBI's assistance, as federal resources are necessary to locate the out-of-state Texas legislators who are potentially acting in violation of the law,' Cornyn continued. 'The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime.' 'Specifically, I am concerned that legislators who solicited or accepted funds to aid in their efforts to avoid their legislative duties may be guilty of bribery or other public corruption offenses,' he added. Cornyn noted that his request is 'time-sensitive' as the Texas Legislature only has about two-weeks remaining in its special session to consider flood-relief bills and the redrawing of state congressional maps. The FBI declined to comment. By absconding from the state capitol, the missing Democratic lawmakers have prevented the GOP-controlled legislature from establishing the quorum necessary to consider the bills. Cornyn's request comes after Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state authorities on Monday to 'arrest' the 'delinquent Texas House Democrats' and bring them back to Austin so the special session can continue. Abbott also directed the Texas Rangers to 'immediately investigate fleeing Texas House Democrats for potential bribery and any other potential legal violations connected to their refusal to appear for a quorum, conduct business, and cast votes.' The governor indicated the investigations would extend to 'anyone who aided or abetted such potential crimes.' 'As we're talking right now, Texas Department of Public Safety officers are on the streets looking for those Democrat House members to arrest them and to take them to the Texas capitol and hold them there until a quorum is reached,' Abbott said in an interview with Fox News host Will Cain on Tuesday. Abbott noted that it's unclear how many of the Democratic lawmakers remain out-of-state but that authorities are 'working with officials in other states to find ways in which we can try to arrest' them and 'bring them back to the state of Texas.' 3 The absent Democrats have prevented the Texas House of Representatives from reaching the quorum necessary to consider a controversial redistricting effort and other legislative measures. Getty Images 3 Cornyn's request to Patel comes after the Texas governor and attorney general moved to arrest and investigate the missing lawmakers. REUTERS The governor also said he'll seek to remove Democratic House members for the legislature who received financial assistance to leave the state. 'Democrats don't seem to know that taking or receiving a payment like they have to escape or not take a vote subjects them to forfeiture of their seat,' Abbott said on 'The Will Cain Show.' 'It's going to be one of the legal grounds you're going to see asserted here immediately to seek the vacation or elimination or abandonment of these House seats by the Democrats,' he added. 'So we will remove them from office and call for elections to replace them.' Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Paxton have set a Friday deadline for the runaway Democrats to appear at the capitol before 'judicial orders' are sought declaring that they have 'vacated their office.' 'The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines,' Paxton wrote on X. 'If you don't show up to work, you get fired.' The deadline was issued after the Texas House again failed to reach a quorum on Thursday afternoon.
