John Torode to leave MasterChef after allegation of using racist language
Torode had earlier said he was the subject of an allegation of using racist language that was upheld as part of an inquiry into the behaviour of his former co-presenter Gregg Wallace.
A Banijay spokesperson said: 'In response to John Torode's statement, it is important to stress that Banijay UK takes this matter incredibly seriously.
'The legal team at Lewis Silkin that investigated the allegations relating to Gregg Wallace also substantiated an accusation of highly offensive racist language against John Torode which occurred in 2018.
'This matter has been formally discussed with John Torode by Banijay UK, and whilst we note that John says he does not recall the incident, Lewis Silkin have upheld the very serious complaint. Banijay UK and the BBC are agreed that we will not renew his contract on MasterChef.'
A BBC spokesperson said the allegation against Torode 'involves an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace', which was 'investigated and substantiated' by the independent investigation led by Lewis Silkin.
They said: 'John Torode denies the allegation. He has stated he has no recollection of the alleged incident and does not believe that it happened. He also says that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment.
'The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed.'

Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar has confirmed the beloved crime drama is set to return to screens very soon. First airing in 2012, the British police procedural was created by Jed Mercurio and centred on Anti-Corruption Unit 12 (AC-12), a fictional team tasked with 'policing the police'. Now Adrian has again weighed in on the rumours it's set to return – giving an update that will surely make fans ecstatic. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, he was asked point blank if a seventh season was on the cards. 'Oh, it's definitely coming back,' he said. 'Some time next year. 'We're just waiting for the BBC to announce it.' Although the actor, 66, has announced the show's return several times in the past few years, only for nothing to eventuate, he is certain this time. 'I know Jed is writing. And Martin and Vicky are very keen,' he added. Earlier this year – in April – The Sun first reported Line of Duty was returning. 'This is the news Line of Duty fans have been waiting for since the sixth season left them deflated when it aired back in 2021,' a source told the publication. 'The BBC almost immediately requested more episodes to continue the story, but the success of the show meant Vicky, Martin and Adrian were instantly snapped up for other projects. 'But after several meetings with Jed and the production team, they've finally managed to clear space in their calendars next year to commit to making the show.' The publication claimed Jed had written most of the storyline for the new season, which it said would production later this year and could even air towards the end of 2026. Since the finale, talks of a subsequent season have repeatedly been raised. In 2023 Martin teased: 'We have a chat group called 'Line of Duty 6' and a while ago Jed changed the name of it to 'Line of Duty 7'.' He later said on his podcast, Restless Natives: 'We have had such a good run with it and a bit of you does go 'Let's walk away on a high', but we all want to work together again because we are so close.' Acclaimed singer cancels all upcoming shows due to ‘continued illness'
Michael Kiwanuka has been forced to cancel all his upcoming gigs, including major festivals, due to 'continued illness'. In a statement released on his Instagram story, his team apologised for the cancellations but didn't share any further details on his health. The news comes only weeks after he took to the stage in Spain for Bilbao BBK Live as well as performing at Primavera Sound last month. He was scheduled to perform at the likes of Victorious and We Out Here festivals in the UK, as well as Budapest's Sziget Festival next month. Later this year, Michael, 37, was also set to be the support act for Mumford & Sons on their North America tour, with the UK leg set for December. The statement read: 'We are so sorry to announce that due to continued illness, and on the advice of doctors, Michael will sadly be unable to perform at the rest of his scheduled festival performances throughout the rest of the summer and the shows in North America in October (including the support tour with Mumford & Sons. 'We know this is disappointing news to hear, and nobody is more disappointed and saddened than Michael to no longer be taking to the stage as planned. 'Love and thanks to everyone for their understanding.' The Cold Little Heart singer shot to popularity in 2012 with his debut album Home Again and cemented his rising star status by winning the BBC's Sound Of… Award that year. The TV presenter and chef, 60, was removed from the cooking competition alongside his co-host Gregg Wallace, also 60, earlier this month. Wallace stepped away from MasterChef in November last year while an in-depth investigation was conducted into the historical allegations regarding his behaviour on the show. It was found that 45 out of 83 allegations were upheld following the investigation. Wallace said he was 'deeply sorry' for his past actions but insisted that the most serious allegations were unproven. Shortly afterwards it emerged that co-host Torode's contract would also not be renewed after nine complaints were lodged against him. Among these was a claim that he 'used the N-word' on two separate occasions, which he said he has no memory of. Now, taking to Instagram, Torode's wife Lisa has made her first public statement. But we made bloody good telly together for 20 years.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from August 6. 'MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey.' The spokesperson revealed that it had 'not been an easy decision in the circumstances' and acknowledged that not everyone would agree with the final result. They added: 'In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters.
