Ship accidents: SDMA launches Web Application

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 19 (UNI) The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has developed a web application to collect information about objects washing ashore or floating in the sea in connection with recent ship accidents off the Kerala coast.
The app collects details such as the name and mobile number of the person reporting the object, a description of the item, its live location or nearest landmark, and images.
So far, 65 containers linked to the ship accident have been recovered along the coast and relocated to various ports.
In Thiruvananthapuram district, 21 barrels found near Vizhinjam and Kovalam have been moved to secure locations at the Vizhinjam port. Two barrels suspected to be related to the accident washed ashore in Alappad (Kollam district) and Kumbla Koyippadi (Kasaragod district).
The vessel involved in the incident, Van Hai 503, has now been moved 57 nautical miles away from the Kerala coast. Efforts are ongoing to tow it further out to sea. Reports indicate that the ship is still emitting smoke and fire.
According to information from the Coast Guard, there is a possibility that containers that fell from the ship may wash ashore along the southern part of Ernakulam district and the coastal areas of Alappuzha and Kollam districts.
In this context, the SDMA emphasized that no one should touch or approach any suspicious object found along the shore. People must maintain a distance of at least 200 meters and inform the matter to the SDMA emergency number 112.

Kulgam encounter enters Day 4 as security forces battle terrorists in dense forests

Srinagar, Aug 4 (UNI) The anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district entered its fourth day today, with intermittent exchanges of fire and explosions continuing through the night in the dense Akhal Khulsan forest area. So far, two terrorists have been killed, and three soldiers injured in the ongoing operation. Officials said one of the slain terrorists is believed to be a local. The encounter which began on August 1 evening after security forces received credible intelligence inputs about the presence of four to five terrorists in the Akhal forest belt. The operation triggered a fierce exchange of fire, which has continued with varying intensity over the past 72 hours. The operation is being carried out jointly by the Army's elite Special Forces, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police, with support from Rudra attack helicopters and surveillance drones, relentlessly combing the area to flush out the hiding militants. The dense and rugged terrain has made the search effort especially challenging, officials said. The area remains under a tight cordon to prevent the remaining militants from escaping. Senior security officials are on the ground, closely monitoring the situation. "When the operation was launched on Friday, initial contact was established, leading to a fierce gunfight. While two terrorists have been neutralized, more are still holed up in the area," a security official said. This is the second major encounter in Kashmir within a week. On July 28 security forces eliminated three Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in an encounter in the Harwan-Dachigam forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar. A day later Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Parliament that the three terrorists were responsible for the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, where 25 tourists and a local pony rider were killed . Cabinet may initiate action against those responsible for irregularities in Kaleshwaram project

Hyderabad, Aug 3 (UNI) The crucial Telangana Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy tomorrow is likely to initiate criminal proceedings or departmental action against those found responsible for alleged irregularities in the execution of the Kaleshwaram project during the previous BRS government. After a 15-month probe into the sinking of sme piers of Medigadda barrage and damages to Annaram and sundilla barrages which are part of the Kaleshwara Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), the Justice PC Ghose one-man commission submitted its 650-page report to Telangana government on July 31, 2025. The report was also officially handed over the Chief Minister on Friday. After discussing the findings of the Justice PC Ghose Commission report on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), the government may direct the Anti corruption Bureau (ACB) or the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to take further action based on the report submitted by the Commission. Following this, the government constituted a high-level committee comprising of Senior Secretaries from the Irrigation, law and General Administration departments, to examine the report and prepare a detailed survey for presentation in the cabinet meeting. Irrigation Minister Kumar Reddy, who conducted a meting with the committee today evening on the preparation of the report submitted it to the cabinet. The cabinet will deliberate on the commission's findings and the committee's brief survey to decide on appropriate action. Speaking at various programmes in Peddapalli district today, Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy confirmed that the state cabinet would soon discuss the report on the Kaleshwaram project and take a policy decision. He reiterated that Telangana was committed to protecting its irrigation rights and would continue to resist any attempts to divert Godavari water out of the state. The Minister criticised the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, stating that ₹1 lakh crore had been wasted and claimed that the Medigadda barrage had failed to provide any benefit. He pointed out that although Kaleshwaram passes through Manthani constituency, it had not irrigated even a single acre. Though Telangana had still achieved record-level paddy production, showing that the state's agricultural performance was not dependent on Kaleshwaram alone, he added. UNI KNR RKM

Alka Lamba slams BJP-ruled states over rising crimes against women, alleges protection for culprits

New Delhi Aug 3 (UNI) The All India Mahila Congress today expressed grave concern over the rising crime against women in BJP-ruled states and accused the state governments of trying to protect the culprits. Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, All India Mahila Congress president Alka Laamba expressed grief over the death of a 15 year old girl from Odisha, who was set afire by three people. She alleged that the police had initially given clean chit to the accused saying they did not have any role. The girl died in the AIIMS Delhi after struggling for life for several days. Lamba cited several cases from BJP-ruled states where, she claimed, crimes against women, especially those from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities have been steadily rising. She said that between 2022 and 2024, 7418 women belonging to the SC/ST community were raped in Madhya Pradesh. She asserted that this was happening mainly in the BJP-ruled states as the culprits were getting protection from the government. She also mentioned about a "Gujarat Police poster advising the girls not to get out of their homes during the night hours". "It only showed the BJP-ruled state's mindset that instead of providing safety and security to women, it was asking them to stay indoors," she said. Welcoming the conviction and sentencing to life of former JD-S MP Prajwal Revanna, Lamba congratulated the Congress government in Karnataka for conducting the trial in a fast track court. She said, while the Central Government had helped Prajwal flee to Germany, it was due to the efforts of the Congress government in the state that made him face the law. This, she claimed, is possible only in the Congress-ruled states, which unlike the BJP-ruled states, have zero tolerance towards crimes against women. UNI RBE GNK
