Clemson head coach Erik Bakich on the Tigers not being done in the transfer portal

USA Today5 hours ago

Clemson baseball's early postseason exit was a bitter pill to swallow, but head coach Erik Bakich is already shifting focus to what comes next — and he's not wasting any time.
After another disappointing finish in regional play, Bakich is using the extra time to aggressively reshape his roster through the transfer portal. The Tigers won 45 games and reached the ACC Championship, but a crushing late-inning loss to West Virginia followed by a lopsided defeat to Kentucky ended their season short of expectations.
'We are fully aware that we took a step back in the month of June,' Bakich said Tuesday on SportsTalk with Phil Kornblut. 'That is all that really matters, and we had nothing to hang our hat on for success this season… So for us, we are heads down and instead of talking about it, we are going to be about it.'
Since his arrival in 2022, Bakich has made it clear the standard at Clemson is a return to Omaha. After coming close in 2024 with a Super Regional run, the 2025 season marked a step back — and Bakich is determined to fix that quickly.
So far, he's added seven players through the portal, including five hitters aimed at addressing offensive inconsistency and two arms to bolster the pitching staff. One of the first portal pickups was Ariston Veasey, a hard-throwing righty from Alabama, followed by Catawba transfer Hayden Simmerson.
Still, Bakich says they're far from done.
'Our coaching staff has been on a mission to find some high-impact dudes, and we are still looking,' he said. 'Trying to find one or two more pitchers… Clemson is looking, and we want an absolute dude.'

Where Clemson landed in ESPN's updated 2026 recruiting rankings after June official visits

June's slate of official visits is now in the rearview, and while Clemson football awaits several key recruiting decisions, ESPN has released its latest 2026 class rankings — with the Tigers still firmly in the national mix. Clemson checks in at No. 6 overall in ESPN's updated rankings, sliding down two spots from the previous edition. Still, the Tigers remain one of the top programs in the country with 10 ESPN 300 commitments already in the fold. The current class continues to show strong momentum, especially after a fast-paced March that reshaped the outlook of Clemson's 2026 haul. 'Clemson is coming off a College Football Playoff appearance, but the Tigers are still chasing the heights of their mid-2010s success under Dabo Swinney, and their 2025 class ranked just 37th in the country,' ESPN's Craig Haubert wrote. 'Their 2026 group is looking more promising, especially after a red-hot March in which Swinney landed eight verbals, including five ESPN 300 commits.' Four-star defensive lineman Keshawn Stancil is scheduled to announce on June 28, followed by five-star lineman Bryce Perry-Wright on July 4. Both are highly sought-after targets who would significantly boost the Tigers' already strong defensive class. Nationally, USC holds the top spot with 17 ESPN 300 commitments. Texas A&M (13), Notre Dame (14), Georgia (12), and Ohio State (13) round out the Top 5. Within the ACC, Miami sits at No. 8 with nine ESPN 300 pledges, while Florida State has surged to No. 10 after previously being outside the Top 25, now holding eight ESPN 300 commits. Other ACC teams in the Top 25 include North Carolina (No. 18), Cal (No. 19), SMU (No. 20), and Louisville (No. 25). Syracuse, meanwhile, took the biggest drop after a quiet visit period, falling 12 spots to No. 22 with just one ESPN 300 recruit. As more summer decisions roll in, Clemson is well-positioned to stay among the nation's elite — and potentially climb even higher in the coming weeks. Auburn football flips 2026 QB Peyton Falzone from Penn State

Peyton Falzone switched his commitment from Auburn to Penn State on Thursday in a surprising move. Auburn football's recruiting efforts for the 2026 cycle are starting to heat up after a few weeks of disappointment. Head coach Hugh Freeze dipped into his old bag of tricks to land the commitment of four-star 2026 quarterback Peyton Falzone, flipping him from Penn State. The move comes before the recruiting dead period, which gives the Tigers momentum to land several other key targets as the summer hits a dry point. If Falzone seems unfamiliar to you, you are not alone. Auburn entered his recruitment recently, extending an offer to him on June 2, and has worked quickly to sway him away from his home-state school, Penn State. After announcing the switch from the Nittany Lions to the Tigers, Falzone told 247Sports' Tom Loy that Auburn has plenty of features that drew him in. "Auburn is a place full of tradition," Falzone said in an interview with 247Sports. "My family and I have spent a lot of time discussing the school and its blend of elite football and high-level academics. It has it all. I'm blessed to be able to play at a school with a strong tradition of faith and family running throughout the university and the community. All of that is very important to us. I can't wait to be there. War Eagle." Falzone recently competed in the Elite 11 finals, where he showcased skills that wowed recruiting experts. "It's hard to find a more dynamic talent than Falzone," On3's Thomas Frank Carr wrote of Falzone. "His hands measure in at 11 inches and engulf the football when he throws. Hands that size give a quarterback elite control of the ball from a fumbling standpoint and allow for a sure grip in any weather. While he's emphatic that he's a quarterback, it's still impressive to watch Falzone casually pluck errant passes out of the air with one hand while waiting in line." Falzone is the No. 4 player from Pennsylvania for the 2026 class, and is the No. 11 quarterback in the cycle, ranking above several key names such as Notre Dame commit Noah Grubbs and Alabama pledge Jett Thomalla. The 6-4, 200-pound product of Nazareth High School is a strong dual-threat quarterback who passed for over 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns last season while rushing for an additional 420 yards and five scores as an 11th grader at Nazareth.
