Check out Hornets' bonkers Summer League championship rings
The Charlotte Hornets have not been to the NBA Playoffs in nearly a decade, but at least on Sunday night, they won an NBA Summer League title. It's not much of an achievement for the franchise, but it's something clearly enough to warrant players to get championship rings.'
Here's a look for one of those shiny rings given to the players after Charlotte defeated the Sacramento Kings in the title game at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas to the tune of an 83-78 score.
Charlotte leaned on a balanced attack to take care of business against the Kings, with 2025 NBA draft No. 4 pick Kon Knueppel lighting it up with 21 points on an 8-for-21 shooting from the floor on his way to winning the NBA Summer League championship game Most Valuable Player award. Knueppel's fellow rookie and Hornets' second-rounder Ryan Kalkbrenner had a near-double-double of 15 points and nine rebounds with a steal and a block while KJ Simpson gathered 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
As a team, the Hornets shot just 39.7 percent from the field and also committed 15 turnovers. However, Sacramento failed to capitalize more on those errors by Charlotte and didn't shoot efficiently either, going 36.5 percent from the floor. The Kings were led by Isaac Jones, who had 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Although winning the NBA Summer League isn't such a prestigious accomplishment and the competition itself is more about player evaluation than actually topping the field, the Hornets can still feel good about what they just achieved in Sin City. For a franchise that doesn't have much to write home about over the last several years, a Summer League title isn't too shabby of a feat.
Seeing Knueppel and Kalkbrenner flourish in the Summer League also adds to the hope that the Hornets will be able to turn things around in the near future, perhaps as soon as the 2025-26 campaign.
The duo of LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller is brimming with potential and adding Knueppel and Kalkbrenner to the mix could further brighten the future of the Hornets franchise, which last made the NBA Playoffs in 2016. The Hornets have also just averaged 22.3 wins over the last three seasons.

Damian Lillard hired to be Weber State men's basketball general manager
Damian Lillard is adding to his workload – outside the NBA. In front of fans during Weber State's Alumni Classic on Aug. 2, the nine-time NBA All-Star guard announced that he has agreed to return to his alma mater to serve as the general manager for the Wildcats' men's basketball program that he once starred in. He is also the latest prominent NBA figure to take on a general manager role in college basketball. The two-time Big Sky Player of the Year joins Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry and Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young to do so at their alma mater, with Shaquille O'Neal taking on the role at Sacramento State. "I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about," Lillard told the Standard-Examiner. In his four seasons at Weber State from 2009-2012, Lillard averaged 18.8 points and 3.5 assists per game while shooting a career 44.6% from the field and 86.7% from beyond the arc. His standout senior season earned him All-America honors, making him the first Big Sky player to achieve that feat. He was drafted No. 6 overall by the Trail Blazers in the 2012 NBA Draft. "From his days as a Wildcat to his success as a professional, Damian Lillard has remained deeply connected to Weber State, leaving an enduring mark on our university," Weber State's Director of Athletics Tim Crompton said in a statement. "This new role allows him to contribute his vision and experience in a more formal way, further elevating our program. His support provides Coach Duft and the program a tremendous advantage as we continue building for the future. Damian's dedication to Weber State is stronger than ever, further cementing his lasting impact on our community." Lillard signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers on July 18 after the Milwaukee Bucks waived him. He is expected to miss the 2025-26 season with the Trail Blazers as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon injury that he sustained during the first round of the NBA Playoffs with the Bucks.

Why Pete Crow-Armstrong is bigger NL MVP challenger to Shohei Ohtani than you think

Oddsmakers are essentially handing the National League Most Valuable Player award to Shohei Ohtani for the second straight year. Could you blame them? The Dodgers' two-way star has been one of the best hitters in baseball – again – and he's back on the pitcher's mound. But Ohtani is not as much of a shoo-in as he was last season, and his competition is much stronger this time around. Pete Crow-Armstrong has burst onto the scene as one of the best players in the sport, and he's arguably been more valuable than Ohtani in 2025. The Cubs have also been the slightly better team, leading the Dodgers, who haven't been the juggernaut they expected to be, by a half game in the standings heading into Saturday's play. This begs the question, why is Ohtani, who is currently -1150 to win the award at FanDuel Sportsbook, so heavily favored over PCA, who has the second-best odds (+1000)? Wins above replacement isn't the end-all-be-all, but it paints a much different picture than Vegas odds boards. Crow-Armstrong currently leads Ohtani by a healthy margin in both FanGraphs and Baseball Reference WAR, even when taking into account the latter's time on the bump. Oddsmakers are probably anticipating Ohtani to bridge that gap now that he's back pitching, but he hasn't shown the ability to pitch deep into games at all, and time is running out to make a real impact there. Ohtani has made seven starts and has thrown just 15 innings. Last time out, he had to leave the game early with cramps. The Japanese star's hitting numbers are all down from the gaudy numbers he put up in 2024 as well. Unlike Ohtani, Crow-Armstrong is playing the field, and arguably doing it better than any player in baseball, making SportsCenter Top 10-worthy plays on a near-nightly basis in center field. His numbers at the plate aren't all that far off from Ohtani's, too, hitting .273/.309/.560 with 27 homers and 29 stolen bases. As mentioned, Ohtani's team is doing him no favors either. After coming into this season with one of the highest win totals ever, the Dodgers are barely holding on in the NL West, sitting just three games up on the Padres, who had a massive trade deadline with the division in sight, heading into Saturday's play. Best of Jayson Tatum with the Boston Celtics in 2024-25
We may not get to see star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum on a basketball court for his team again until the start of the NBA's 2026-27 regular season. The St. Louis native tore his Achilles tendon playing the New York Knicks in the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals second round series that would Boston's last in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. Fans of Tatum and the Celtics will likely grow restless waiting for his return to the team, but the folks behind the official Celtics YouTube channel put together a clip of the best of the Duke alum's plays from the 2024-25 season to keep us all occupied while we wait for Tatum to get back to being himself.
